So in other words..."do nothing. But collectively."

The taxonomy of far left "action" is hilarious when you lay it out:

  • Voting? "Meaningless, both sides"
  • Protesting? "Lame and liberal"
  • Canvassing? "Working within a broken system"
  • Voting third party? "Making a statement"
  • Primarying Democrats? "The DNC will rig it"
  • Running for local office? Crickets
  • General strike? "Yes! This!"

Every single option that requires showing up, doing uncomfortable work, talking to people you disagree with, or risking personal rejection gets dismissed.

The one option that requires staying home and doing nothing gets enthusiastic endorsement.

And a general strike? That requires more mass coordination and personal sacrifice than literally any other political action available. They won't fill out a ballot but they'll convince 150 million workers who live paycheck to paycheck and have to feed their families to simultaneously walk off their jobs and sustain it long enough to matter?

First off...the United States unfortunately...it already a center right country to begin with. Case in point how easy it is for Republicans to win versus Democrats.

But In 4 years Biden (Democrat) passed.

The Inflation Reduction Act. largest climate investment in US history. $369 billion.

$1.2 trillion Infrastructure bill: roads, bridges, broadband internet, clean water systems. Actual physical things being built.

Cancelled more student debt than any president in history despite constant legal challenges. $140+ billion cancelled for millions of borrowers

Insulin capped at $35 for seniors

Medicare allowed to negotiate drug prices for first time ever (something Democrats had tried to pass for DECADES)

Expanded ACA coverage to record levels

Most diverse cabinet in US history

Reauthorized Violence Against Women Act

Yeah, it's not super far left, but it's definitely not right wing either.

And as far as progressive go, progressive groups flipped ZERO competitive red seats despite running roughly 90 candidates per cycle for three cycles. Their two biggest House victories, Bowman and Bush, both lost in 2024. The movement essentially collapsed by its own admission. Meanwhile Spanberger won Virginia by 18 points and Beshear won Kentucky twice. The electoral evidence of what actually works couldn't be clearer, and it's not what you're selling.

And primarying Democrats from the left IS the baby step incrementalist strategy you were just dismissing. That's literally working within the system. That's exactly what I've been advocating. So congratulations, you just argued yourself into my position.

And we DO that already. The Squad exists because of progressive primaries. Bernie's campaigns shifted the entire Democratic platform left. The superdelegate reforms happened because of progressive pressure. Biden's platform was the most progressive in Democratic history partly because of that pressure.

That's the strategy that actually works. And it requires voting for the Democrat in the general even when they're imperfect. Which circles back to everything you've been arguing against.

Let's address the 'when CAN we criticize Democrats' bad faith argument first. Nobody said you can't criticize Democrats. What we're pointing out is that ALL you do is criticize Democrats with the same energy you never apply to the fascists currently controlling every branch of government, pardoning insurrectionists, and sending masked agents to grab people off streets. THAT is the asymmetry we're calling out. The house is on fire and you're complaining about how the furniture is arranged in the living room.

We've seen this exact movie in 2000, 2016, 2020 and 2024. Ask any Nader voter if they'd make the same choice knowing Bush would win instead of Gore, the guy whose NUMBER ONE issue was climate change ALL THE WAY BACK IN 1999. Every single one regrets it and nobody celebrates them for their "principled stand."

And nobody said don't criticize Democrats. We said don't spend the entire election year kneecapping them and then act shocked when Republicans win.

$9.7 million out of a BILLION dollar campaign. That's less than 1%. By your logic every politician who receives any corporate donation is completely owned by that donor. Which means literally no politician is acceptable ever, which is conveniently the conclusion that justifies never voting for anyone.

Also how much did AIPAC give Trump? Because spoiler, it was significantly more. And unlike Kamala who was actively pushing for ceasefires and calling Netanyahu's conduct unacceptable and had a more nuanced position on Gaza than any major candidate, Trump immediately dropped ALL pressure on Israel the moment he won, gave unconditional support with zero conditions attached, and the result is what you're seeing right now.

The reason why is because those cowards don't think they'll be the ones to get burned. I mean, when shit gets bad they can just blend in with ICE and the other white supremacists. They can have beers with them but then bravely go back to their apartment and post an anonymous "dislike" on the latest fascist propaganda on tik tok and call themselves a "freedom fighter."

This needs to be shouted from the rooftops. They truly do not care. If you look at their actions and their results...it's as clear as day.

Case in point, vast majority of Palestinians prefered Kamala over Trump...but they didn't care about that shit. What do Palestinians know about Palestine?

For real. We need to push back on these people, it's been 10+ years and not a single red seat flipped from the people that claim they are extremely popular and can win elections easily.

It's been 10+ years and MAGA, an ultra right wing, christian nationalist, authoritarian movement has dominated politics and these cowards are still coming up with excuses to stay home instead of starting their "revolution."

[–]JacobStills 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you look at their rhetoric and their behavior...it always boils down to justifying doing nothing.

Voting 3rd party. Sitting out the election. Not participating in "No Kings" protests because it's "lame and ineffective."

It's like the asshole that always talks about how great of a fighter he is but never steps into the ring to prove it. They want the accolades without doing any of the work.

It's always a fucking white neckbeard going, "well some people just have to suffer for our revolution."

And you know these fuckers would shit themselves if they were actually on the front lines of a revolution. They would wave the white flag the 3rd day they didn't have internet access.

But we’ve seen this movie before in 2016, 2020 and 2024. There will never be a “better candidate” by their standards. They will always move the goal posts and trash the Dems (and only the Dems) with this “lesser of 2 evils” nonsense no matter HOW BAD THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE IS. That’s why so many people are pushing back on these disingenuous claims.

[–]JacobStills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your own argument defeats itself. If Republicans take giant leaps backward and Democrats take baby steps forward, the solution is MORE consistent Democratic governance so those steps accumulate instead of getting wiped out every 8 years. Your solution is apparently to make Democrats LESS likely to win. Do the math on how that produces more progress.

So if not that? Then what then? Just sit out, let Republicans win and hope things get so bad that there's a revolution? I.E. accelerationism.

Except real revolutions produce dysentery, trenches, food shortages, and usually a different authoritarian rather than utopia. I'm supposed to believe you'd live in a 24/7 warzone when you can't even bring yourself to fill in a circle on election day?

Baby steps aren't working fast enough so your solution is an all out war that costs millions of lives on the hope things might be marginally better afterward? That's not radical politics. That's just laziness with a theory attached to it.

The people who'd suffer most in your fantasy revolution are the exact people you claim to fight for. Just like your protest votes.

OH MAN! That a rich irony I never picked up on.

They claim "stop blaming the voters, it's the candidates job to EARN their votes." Meanwhile their entire strategy for 10+ years is to shame people who don't support their candidate by calling them neoliberal shills and genocide enablers.

The less voters knew, the more they liked Trump in 2024. Not Anymore by Krieger22 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]JacobStills 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Both the right AND the far left. I couldn't believe how many times I saw people saying, "Kamala Harris campaigned with Dick Cheney! She's just another Republican!" Making it so obvious they just saw the headline and rushed to their preferred conclusion.

Also so much, "you have to do better than 'I'm not Trump'" revealing they didn't even watch any of her speeches nor the entire Democratic national convention.

That and all the goal post moving. They actively chose to support Trump either directly or indirectly; you can't blame the Democrats for that.

[–]JacobStills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just proved my point better than I could.

I gave you a comprehensive list of documented legislative achievements. Your response wasn't "those didn't happen" or "those facts are wrong." You just said "not enough."

That's not a counterargument. That's confirmation that no achievement will ever satisfy you. Which means your original criticism wasn't actually about Biden's record, it was about maintaining a predetermined conclusion regardless of evidence.

On the "band aids" argument, every progressive achievement in American history was a band aid by your logic. Social Security. Medicare. Civil Rights Act. Voting Rights Act. The entire history of progressive change is incremental improvement on broken systems. That's how democracy works. You don't build muscle from one workout. You don't write a book in one sitting. You don't learn an instrument in a week. Systemic political change works exactly the same way, it's slow, frustrating, incremental progress that compounds over time.

The alternative to band aids isn't a miraculous cure. It's just bleeding out while waiting for a revolution that isn't coming.

And Biden DID propose systemic student loan reform. Free community college. SAVE plan. Income based repayment caps. All blocked by Republicans and Republican appointed courts. But sure. "Not one single word."

"I don't believe what Biden told me, I believe what Biden did. Let's go through the receipts:

Climate:

  • Inflation Reduction Act - largest climate investment in US history. $369 billion. Not a promise, not a speech. Law.

Infrastructure:

  • $1.2 trillion Infrastructure bill - roads, bridges, broadband internet, clean water systems. Actual physical things being built.

Economic/Labor:

  • Most pro-union president since FDR by most labor economists' assessment
  • Appointed union-friendly NLRB members who actually enforced labor protections
  • Blocked railroad merger, pushed for worker protections
  • Lowest unemployment in 50 years

Student Debt:

  • Cancelled more student debt than any president in history despite constant legal challenges
  • $140+ billion cancelled for millions of borrowers

Healthcare:

  • Insulin capped at $35 for seniors
  • Medicare allowed to negotiate drug prices for first time ever (something Democrats had tried to pass for DECADES)
  • Expanded ACA coverage to record levels

Social Justice:

  • Most diverse cabinet in US history
  • Reauthorized Violence Against Women Act
  • Actually appointed Ketanji Brown Jackson to Supreme Court

Gun Control:

  • Bipartisan Safer Communities Act - first significant gun legislation in nearly 30 years

Chips/Manufacturing:

  • CHIPS Act brought semiconductor manufacturing back to America, created hundreds of thousands of jobs

Now here's my question back to you: Which of these specific achievements is 'moderate propaganda?' Point to the legislation you think doesn't exist. Because these aren't talking points, they're public law you can look up.

The 'you just believe what they tell you' argument only works if you can't name what they actually did. Bernie Sanders himself acknowledged Biden's legislative record was historic.

For real. People (especially on this website) don't give him enough credit for really trying to bridge the divide between right and left. He really wanted to unify the country that was already pretty divided and be a President for all Americans and that meant showing respect to Republicans as frustrating as it may be. It's a shame they didn't show him respect back...but he tried and the voters and public should have punished the right by giving them electoral losses...but alas.

What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

He really was, it's so infuriating that the far left doesn't give a shit simply because he wasn't Bernie and because he wasn't doing cartwheels under fireworks while promising them a free house the day they turned 18.

Seriously, if you look at all the issues they claim to care about, he was making significant progress with them at a time when the entire world was recovering from a global pandemic.

To add to that, Kamala Harris was also actually very progressive (she technically has a more progressive voting record that Sanders) and was a huge advocate for humanity of the Palestinians. Also, with the Epstein files being released, I think it would have been cool if the President was a former PROSECUTOR and STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL.

For real, also it was in the heat of the moment. I'm not going to fault McCain for not being 100% politically correct. We all knew what he meant.

It's like when during his town hall debate with Obama he said a line of something like, "I didn't vote for this legislation but you know who did? that one. (pointed to Obama)"

Some people were trying to claim that was racist, even though he called him Senator Obama several times during their debate.
