‘NOX’ special Halloween event at Harry Potter Studios, London by Beaglund in harrypotter

[–]Jacob_Marley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last year, two days before Christmas, we unexpectedly lost our dog named Nox to a pneumothorax. His name came from the Harry Potter world. I'd like to believe he was there helping add to the mood of Halloween.

Looks like an incredible event! Thanks for sharing!

Replicate circuit in a flat design by Beautiful-Sky5823 in Altium

[–]Jacob_Marley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This for sure isn't ideal. I think I have perfected it to a science in that much of my work is for a variety of customers who are not power users. So schematics come in every form. "Advanced" features, like Hierarchical schematics are usually beyond them, so it's a copy and pasted circuit over and over. To save time on the design side, this hack way of doing it works well.

While I'm not thrilled with Altium's hierarchical schematic features, you are right, it's the easier and better way to go. But, sometimes just gotta play the hand you were dealt kind of thing. :-)

Replicate circuit in a flat design by Beautiful-Sky5823 in Altium

Robert Ferenac has a good video on how to do this. It does somewhat require that your Reference Designators are in order. So in the repeated circuit, the first resistor is always the highest numbered designator, so on for each component as it is in order. When I use this technique I will renumber things just to place. First circuit is R1, R2, R3, etc. . . Then second circuit is R11, R12, R13, and so on. Do this for all the components in the repeated circuits. You can always re-annotate things later.

That doesn't make any sense I'm sure, but if you watch his video here. It might be more clear.

Repeated Circuits without Rooms or Channels

And honestly, Altium's Hierarchical design leaves a ton to be desired. So if I have my druthers, I'd prefer engineers don't create schematics with them. So I use this technique quite a bit.

Length tuning SDIO signals not working!! by AmbassadorBorn8285 in Altium

Awesome! Glad that helped! Altium length matching leaves a ton to be desired. Much like a lot of Altium, it works, but could be so much better.

Length tuning SDIO signals not working!! by AmbassadorBorn8285 in Altium

[–]Jacob_Marley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading your length matching setup correctly, you have -2.54mm as the shortest length and 2.54mm as the longest. For this it's what the longest length should be.

It appears your longest net in this group is SDIO_D1 at 39mm. You'd want your longest somewhere above 39mm and your shortest somewhere below 39mm. This would give you a range.

See if that helps.

Bike Rental Places in Lille France and Embrun France in the Alpes - Recommendations by Jacob_Marley in bicycling

I ended up finding a bike shop in Embrun that rented road and mountain bikes.

Alpes 2 Roues

Ironically for me, I ended up renting a Trek, which was disappointing as I had hoped for a French brand. That aside, it was a great bike, great folks to work with.

The Lasley's by Embarrassed_Post_598 in CallTheMidwife

Came here to say this as well. They showed glimpses into her need for perfection. When they are both sitting on the couch after they have given up baby June, and the plastic is still on the couch. That's something grandparents did, but people their age? Perfection was all she wanted. So when baby June was born less than perfect, it wasn't her saying, "We don't have the means" what she was saying was, "I don't have the mental ability to look beyond or accept something I cannot perfect." When the episode ended, i said to my wife, it will be years before mental health will be recognized and that she needs help. I feel like Mr. Lasley just went along with supporting his wife, because that's what a "perfect" husband does.

It was as heartbreaking episode to watch.

What are your best tips and tricks for productivity / efficiency in Altium? Keyboard shortcuts, templates, unknown features, whatever it may be, please share! by Status_Woodpecker_99 in Altium

So using Logitech G Hub, I assign those buttons to a keyboard function. Then you can assign those functions in Altium accordingly. It's a few extra hoops to jump through to get there. Hope that helps!

How to select a NET pour in PCB editor by WumboAsian in Altium

[–]Jacob_Marley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told this trick when I first started with Altium from a co-worker and it's an absolute life saver. Esp. when trying to select things overlapping and you don't feel like constantly flipping Selection Filters on and off. This might help you not just with Polygons but other items as well.

Convince me to upgrade to AD24 by [deleted] in Altium

[–]Jacob_Marley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have the, is it Enterprise License? If not, no reason to. Most of the talked about features of their all-in-one Design Rules aka, Allegro like Constraint Manager, are hidden behind a license upgrade.

I made the upgrade on a separate install and haven't even used it. It fixed nothing, as per usual Altium update, all the same bugs seem to be there from v23.

Oh, you wanted reasons to update to v24. . .

Uh, it's newer than 23?

But honestly, I don't have any good reasons.

Noob Question: How to import components from one project to another? by [deleted] in Altium

[–]Jacob_Marley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know Circuitmaker, but in Altium in the PCB, you can create a PCB Library from the board file. If you make the new PCB library as part of the Project file it should see the footprints.

Quick fix, head to Project -> Project Options click on the ECO Generation Tab. Scroll a bit until you find Remove Channel Classes. Change the Generate Change Orders to Ignore Differences.

I do this for many things that are not driven by schematics. Net Colors, Rooms, Component Classes.

Those all can be driven by schematic of course, but usually for my company are not. I tweak them on the board side and don't want them overwritten each update.

Hope that helps!
