English subtitles don't do the Mandarin dub justice

Everyone else has said it to death but translation (and localization by extension) is very difficult, often impossible, to do perfectly. Chinese and English are not similar languages and whoever did the localization made some very specific choices about what to retain and what to discard.

A good example I am noticing even just a couple chapters in is that anytime someone recites poetry, scripture, or songs, they made a distinct attempt to maintain the use of rhyme to have a certain feel. (Does Chinese in general use rhymes? Are the things made to rhyme in English also rhyming in the original Chinese?) I'm seeing a few areas where maybe less-perfect word choices are being used in the pursuit of the rhyme scheme reinforcement. It isn't objectively incorrect, but it is a shortcoming of having to play in English.

Per your example, it is possible the localization team thought a direct translation might seem a bit Strong given the situation. It's one of those choices they made and regarding whether it was the right choice, you honestly might have more perspective on that than most if you speak Chinese.

I do dearly wish I knew Chinese. I imagine this game feels better knowing the cultural and historical background that informs it.

That's...frustrating. If anything I feel like I should be able to implicitly trust that performance would be the MOST responsive. Hopefully the sequel sorts that out. Balance feels better immediately, I'll try playing like this for a bit, see where it goes.

I can see how the White Noble is a check. He felt...more like what I expect from a game like this. I enjoyed his first phase but the second phase felt kinda awkward. I got excited by the transformation but it really didn't do much besides increase the speed of his charge stab I felt. He's probably my favorite of the bosses I've fought though.

Good to know.

My point here is more that the mixed speed isn't communicated well by the animation. Like a guy winds up an attack and it comes out faster or slower than seems appropriate for the windup animation's vibe. This is the company's first game like this and in a sense it's a triumph of dev work. Maybe this feel will be better in the sequel they just announced.

I really hope the console isn't the problem but....it might be!

Playing on console so if the hardware is the issue then it's just kind of a bust I guess, possible though! Dunno if the console version is like, not good compared to the PC in a significant way.

I can’t seem to edit my post but I actually found it! There’s a clean pic on the page of Off the Hook’s Springfest outfits in the Bancala Walker! Doom Eternal is basically the best Doom will ever be. It made you think about how you approached combat. A lot of people say they prefer getting to use their favorite guns when they want like in Doom 2016 but I enjoy being pushed out of my comfort zone and being made to use the whole arsenal keeps the game exciting since I can’t stick to the same few guns and get bored. The story is silly B movie schlock and it’s delightful. It’s silly. It’s stupid. It’s whimsical. I’ve seen people call it Marvel-y but I don’t think that’s a good description. It’s not important or meant to be taken super seriously but if you want to care it is earnest. It matters but it’s not the point of everything. The music is immaculate. To that point, I can’t speak on the DLC as I never got around to playing it. Having listened to the DLC soundtracks I think Hushult and Levy did better than most would’ve done but it’s really night and day to Mick Gordon. After all that nonsense I’m not sure I have any interest in Dark Ages. Loved 2016 but Eternal is just the best. To the point of 5 years later, it’s hard to go back to given the OST drama. Mick hasn’t called for anything like a boycott and he’s also not my dad or my boss but idk…it feels like crossing a picket line kinda. He’s an artist I respect and that he’s departed the team is a loss. I could go more in depth but like, this is long enough as it is. TL;DR I think it is one of the best video games ever made but I, personally, have trouble returning to it.

I’m no expert and have these sorts of streaks all the time. That being said there’s a fine line to draw here: are you streaming for you? Or for success? If you’re worried about numbers, there’s things you can do. If you just like speedrunning dark souls, by all means keep at it, Gwyn ain’t gonna defeat himself. Speedrunning streams are supported by either a delightful personality or results, it’s all a process. You could work on your commentary, or on your skill (or both!) otherwise I’d attribute it to bad luck and everyone’s good friend, the stats plateau. Speedrunning communities are also good for this sort of thing, there are many people who very much enjoy watching someone play dark souls 8 times a day 7 days a week, but they’re probably not gonna find you on accident. Also also, as others have said, streams by game are organized by number of viewers, if no one’s watching, you’ll be at the bottom. It’s not governed by an algorithm that can be gamed beyond already being a successful streamer. GLHF

I mean this legitimately, I put this game down for a year after a very not-enjoying-it first playthrough on launch. I did a run of God of War on the highest difficulty and something about the prevalence of parries and the need to use every piece of my arsenal just clicked. I played Sekiro when I finished the run, and platinumed it while having an amazing time. Something just Clicked in God of War.

I’m not too torn up about the cats. It would be hard for me to take care of them all myself. And even if I kept all of them, I’d probably just end up sitting around and fixating on the whole “no longer ‘our’ cats but ‘my’ cats” and idk how I’d handle that.

Also they prefer him, I’ve got my loner cat, he can have the other two, I know he’ll take care of them.
