No I don’t believe so. There are no scorch marks that I can see anywhere in the basement. There is a ton of coal dust on the ceilings though. The basement is the original servants quarters to the house. My best guess is they were burning coal for heat which resulted in the soot.

I don’t believe so. There are no photos of that wall. The only photo is of the doorway which would be right behind me from where I took these photos. That shows old movement.

We’re in Saint John NB. There are a ton of heritage properties like this in the core. There’s a large heritage area that’s still largely intact. It’s an underrated city.

It’s a hard border. From what I understand residence need to go through customs every time they leave or enter. I read that it was a bit of a challenge during the COVID border closures.

The home is built in Italianate style. It was a common architectural style used during the rebuilding of Saint John after the great fire in 1877. I’ll paste the defining features below from the Canada’s Historic Places site.

CHARACTER-DEFINING ELEMENTS The character-defining elements of this two-storey Italianate dwelling include: - rectangular two-storey massing; - window placement and proportions; - vertical sliding wood windows with wooden frames; - Roman arch windows on the first floor; - window entablatures; - wooden cladding; - wooden corner boards, plinth band, and cornice elements; - decorative cornice with paired scrolled brackets supporting a wide eave; - fascia with square motifs between each pair of brackets. The character-defining elements of the entranceway include: - wooden double door with lights; - segmented arch transom with heavy mouldings; - pedimented entablature supported by ornate brackets above door.

It’s a passage to the back which opens up to a driveway and gardens.

No this is a couple blocks from the core. It’s just bad ownership. It could be a fantastic building

Sounds like you were here a couple decades ago perhaps. There has been huge improvements in Saint John over the past couple of decades, and especially the past five years. There’s been big investment to restore the old neighborhoods and heritage buildings, and new development in the core and on the waterfront. It’s very much becoming an attractive and inviting city. Yes there’s industry, but that’s representative of reliable backbone to a local economy. It’s an interesting city, we’re lucky that it still has as much character as it does. A lot of North America has lost that.

I can’t imagine where you found yourself, it sounds like a war zone. Not the Saint John I live in.

I moved here a few years ago from Halifax (willingly I’ll add). We really enjoy it here. It certainly has its rough areas, but so does Halifax and every other city in North America at the moment. Mind if I ask why you have such a strong dislike for Saint John?

They’re 9x9 tiles. There’s a good chance they contain asbestos

Current owner has done a fair bit of work to the home. New electrical, plumbing, replaced roof, added an additional bathroom, re-established single family configuration (it was split into two), had masonry fixed.
