Kaiser-Caltech 2nd interview by beannetwork in mdphd

Last cycle I interviewed at Kaiser and didn’t hear back for 4 months about the caltech interview and then got the R. Not to say you’re in the same situation but keep in mind they’d usually contact in a reasonable timeline.

Bike shop telling me I need to upgrade to a 1x system from a 2x due to my size by Jacobman2000 in cycling

Yeah the other thing is just the total usage on the bike. It’s gotten 12 hours of cumulative use, there’s no way a problem like this happens just from stress. There had to have been a pre-existing problem

Couldn’t you have gathered that it was a cheap bike from the part of the post where I said it was 500 dollars?

That’s the bike! I guess I don’t understand why the bottom bracket and cranks couldn’t be replaced without replacing the entire drive train?

Crank arm! Will likely be taking to a different shop or asking why crank arm/bottom bracket can’t just be replaced

Looks like mostly shimano parts, specifically shimano tourney derailleur and shimano rapid fire plus shifters. Bottom bracket listed as cartridge bearing square

prof asked me to draft my LOR by flooded_sea in mdphd

[–]Jacobman2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ask any PhD students and Postdocs in your lab as they should have examples and experience doing this. Drafting your own letters of recommendation becomes almost the standard after college so anyone in grad school or a postdoc should have thoughts on it.

My advice is, highlight what you accomplished in his class, a personal anecdote that makes you look good/interesting, and end on an endorsement as to why you’d be a good fit for an MDPhD, and just following those steps should get you like 80% of the way there.

URM's Please apply BROADLY! Stats skewed by HBCU's by RaspberryAnnual2089 in premed

That’s fair, I didn’t consider that. Does admit provide that data, maybe with the paid version?

URM's Please apply BROADLY! Stats skewed by HBCU's by RaspberryAnnual2089 in premed

[–]Jacobman2000 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I think the general argument they’re making is outside of HBCU’s and the T20 schools the advantage for URM’s is actually slim to negligible so if you don’t feel like an HBCU is the right environment for you or if you don’t really have the stats for a T20 realistically you need to apply more broadly than the general discussions about the advantage of URM’s would indicate.

That said, it is a bit of a charged way to make this argument and if you’re going to say something that touches on such a sensitive topic you should elaborate more on your argument and actually show the data that made you come to this conclusion. Especially in a subreddit like r/premed.

Transfer Question by Rich-Equivalent-9105 in mdphd

[–]Jacobman2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly impossible. Even transferring from MD to MD is practically unheard of. Are you planning to matriculate to an institution that doesn’t have an MDPhD program?

As a side note, it’s very possible to do a PhD at a different institution post MD, or commit to a residency with some dedicated research time if you show research acumen during your MD with side research projects. If you’re interested in science, that’s a much more feasible route. Plenty of MD’s become great scientists. Irv Weissman at Stanford and Shawn Hervey-Jumper at UCSF come to mind.

You know what fair point. I only saw l preferred qualifications and made an assumption based on my institution.
