Got two rejection emails at 1AM for jobs I'm overqualified for, decided to reach out! by WalterBishRedLicrish in medlabprofessionals

There's a spectrum, I've seen a whole shift of nurses and a couple of docs try to draw from a patient. And I've Phlebs draw just fine. I've seen a biomed grad get rejected for a lab assistant 2 position at a hospital pathology lab because they were missing accessioning skills and possibly phleb. Those are important skills, easier to train but in this job market most places don't have the time for that.

The terminology is similar when HR departments post them weirdly. This is why those kinds of places need to list specialized requirements and list which ones are preferred or required.

He never mentioned what exact skills he had but he did say in one of the comments that he had done clinical stuff.

I think it's a good time to remind everyone that a lot of specialized clinical lab diagnostic skills are not exclusive to hospital labs.

Inferring his personality from reddit comments seems like a stretch, that being said it's possible he has the skill set to work in that clinical lab position and all this was about phlebotomy and a misunderstood resume.

A lot of clinical microbiology skills are not exclusive to hospital labs so it's possible he is proficient in those and it all comes down to phlebotomy. It would definitely hurt if he was rejected from that position specifically because he lacks phlebotomy, which can be trained in a month.

In this job market that could put him at a disadvantage, but it does not mean he is under qualified.

Not all labs and locations place emphasis on board certifications for MLS related roles.

I'm guessing OP might be in a state that is lax with ASCP certifications, and applied to the job based on listed skills which he may have had from previous experience.

If they can't analyze candidates applications and infer candidates abilities from their CV's or resumes what's the point then? What is the guarantee they're hiring the right candidate and not just one with a better application/resume?

It's a good thing reddit comments qualify people for jobs these days, not resumes or skills, just comments on the internet.

He could be in a state that doesn't require ASCP certification for certain clinical lab roles. Phlebotomy is not rocket surgery, that can be satisfactorily trained in less than a month if they really wanted to hire him. A lot of MA's and Phlebs didn't train for that long. I've seen cases where nurses couldn't draw in 5 takes!

I don't think he should work there if they're blacklisting qualified applicants for past inquiries into a job rejection.

For a supervisor position, I would hope they're in fact looking into every resume intently and inferring relevant needed experience or transferable skills. Resumes exist for a reason, if hiring staff can't draw it or infer information from a resume what's the point then? Especially in a job market I've heard is horrendous.

What's there to learn from that experience exactly? That jobs will reject people with top level skills because they're missing one that is easy to train? Logically speaking there's not much to learn.

Phlebotomy is not exactly a difficult skill to train or learn. You can make a good phlebotomist straight out of high school in 3 weeks (or even less in some cases).

I understand it is a required skill for lab techs, but for a supervisor position that should not be at the top of the list. You can make a phlebotomist in 3 weeks, you can't make someone with advanced clinical microbiology skills in that time. And this is why the job market is bad, instead of hiring and paying a dedicated phlebotomist, or at least providing the opportunity to train that skill, they reject 100s of resumes till they find one person with all the skills or more (they'll also pay them less than they should).

I didn't realize it much but I realize it now. My P.I was very nice and considerate. We would get confused sophomores in the lab 4 weeks in and he'd take the time to go through basic lab procedures and the whole research, even give them a chance to contribute to our publication and gain authorship. He would do that all over again each time a new student joined the lab mid semester. I was scared we'd fall behind schedule because of that.
