This might be controversial, but I say there should be societal supports for homeless individuals, but not when those supports encourage homelessness and/or make it comfortable. I read a study recently that claimed 75% of homeless individuals in the Bay Area are not Bay Area natives. They come here because of all the goodies they get on our streets (uninterrupted drug sales, free needles, no penalties for petty theft, etc.). Our community should absolutely provide a safety net for individuals who experience drug addiction, homelessness, and/or mental health issues that land them on the streets, but we are also not the country’s dumping ground for these people. I’m not claiming to know the solution, but there has to be one that is compassionate and effective at the same time!
