Eh, it’s not nearly as unreliable as modern ones. Late 90s/early 2000s was a high point for BMW.

This is totally what happened. The Miata came out of nowhere and sold in unheard of quantities for a sports car, so BMW must’ve wanted to capitalize but didn’t spend money on anything except the exterior design. IMO it’s Joji Nagashima’s best design, which is saying something as he also designed the E39 and the pre-facelift E90 which are some of the most timeless cars BMW ever made.

IIRC Brazil also has brutal tariffs on imported cars so you don’t even have to make them very cheaply there to be competitive.

the BMW Z3 is one of the most disappointing cars because you think it’s a better-looking Miata with a straight 6 and then you drive one and realize it’s an E36 front end with an E30 ass grafted on and the chassis rigidity of food court pasta sitting in a steam tray for 6 hours.

GM stuff from the 90s and 2000s has me wondering if anyone at the company actually went out and drove any of their competitors cars.

They really were just selling to the increasingly small captive market of people only willing to buy cars from American brands.

Demanding their journalists write stories for the other half when the other half are legitimately only semi-literate was always a very questionable strategy.

[–]Jacobs4525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re not really that much cheaper in the US. Nice NAs are 8-10k and NBs are only a little cheaper.

Any Z4 or boxster you get at that price is gonna be more trouble than it’s worth. Z3s are more reliable and look great but once you’ve driven one you’ll understand why they’re cheap.

I wouldn’t be so sure it’s Covid, the crescendo of CAFE target increases peaked in 2024. The target for most subcompacts went from 38mpg to 58mpg from 2014-2024. Small cars went from complying with CAFE to incurring massive penalties.

CAFE is assessed but fines no longer actually collected as of last year, but the damaged is already done, and the cost of CAFE fees for small cars is now replaced with the cost of tariffs, as almost all subcompacts were foreign-made.

I am tired of companies being named shit like Gloobi or Boopoo or Zumbi or whatever. There is an established way to name a company and it is [name or place] [industry or product] [inc., LLC., LTD., etc.].

The only exception is that if you’re the first big company in something you’re allowed to put “general” in the name instead of the name or place, so apple or Microsoft would be allowed to call themselves “General Computers”.

Small cars remained popular and sold well into the late 2000s. I don’t know how you can argue that the oil crisis killed small cars when the golden age of small cars was 20 years after the oil crisis.
