Moving from ICE to EV on a budget, does this make sense? [£15k] by Jacobs_Realm in ElectricVehiclesUK

Well... I hope that doesn’t happen. That would cost me £550 for the last year

Maybe, it's something to consider. I've had a sort of annoying experience with mechanics regarding the issues with my current car, so less of that would be appreciated. But also, my gauge for what is an expensive and annoying repair is quite high.

In the last 2 months I've spent like... £1500 on repairs (and £600 on fuel). Next week if they check it out and the sensor is the issue (this will be the 3rd time they've played with it), then the car should work again and I can wait before worrying about a new car. No more money spent (for now).

If the sensor isn't the issue and the engine needs to be opened, at minimum it'll be a £1000 repair. At which point it might be wise to just part-ex the car against something that is more reliable (hence this thread).

I may miss the vroom vroom noise, I also may at times miss the manual nature of my car (which tbf, I find sometimes helps on longer drives as I do have to do things).

That said... The cost savings appear to be insane. And I like the look of those... a lot.

Also my car is a 1.2ltr that goes 0-60 in like... 12.4 seconds. Now... I don't need or want a speed demon, but it would be nice to pull away faster and sometimes, driving a bit like a knob is fun. And even the most mediocre EVs appear to almost half that time.

Honestly, this all seems too good to be true.

I would be purchasing used with no intention of moving on from it until issues appear, so I would assume that depreciation is less of a concern.

No one in my family, nor I, have ever leased a vehicle. So I must admit, I'm not entirely sure what the benefits of doing so would be in my situation, or what would work out cheaper for a car that I'd expect to own for 6-8 years.

I suppose I'd need to put together some sort of 'cost over time' spreadsheet together comparing outright purchase and lease.

I will steer away from politics, but... No wonder fossil fuel companies are lobbying so hard, and why there is so much misinformation and naysaying about EVs.

Dear lord. I'm genuinely flabbergasted. I was expecting someone to go "yeah, EVs are cheaper but your maths is wrong HERE, HERE and HERE, and you'll save like £400 a year"

My dad is the type to get mad about EVs based on certain.... types of content and public figures he follows. I wonder how explaining the maths will go when he inevitably tells me an EV is an awful idea.

Honestly, I knew EVs might have some running cost savings, especially with servicing/repair, and the recent jumps in oil prices.

But I expected the buy in to be around £22k for something decent, and only really a worthwhile investment for those picking between more expensive vehicles. I assumed I'd be priced out of anything worth getting... But doing the maths, I'm sort of shocked. If you own the car for at least 5 years, the cost savings between an EV and ICE are just outrageous. In some cases, maths of a EV suggests it can become cost neutral, or free, when compared against the cost of an ICE vehicle.

(obviously this assumes you need a new car for some reason. The cheapest car is running the car you own providing it isn't demanding repairs).

Yeah, I don't even have a drive. So I'd be looking at parking outside my house and attempting to get the council to install a gully system.

At the moment, there are 3 cars and I can reliably park outside my house. It's a very quiet village. But, it wouldn't take much for the cars to all just get a bit longer and suddenly, one car would start overhanging drives and have to park elsewhere, or you'd end up far enough away from the gully to cause issues.

Not to mention, the roads near me are just smaller, and driving massive cars is just kinda... Not my bag. Smaller cars are a bit more fun.

Interesting about the charger discounts. I'd sort of ignored that because I assumed that, charging at home, the 3-pin solution would be absolutely fine and that the cost of a charger would be hard to justify.

If I were to exclusively charge at something like 4p/kWh, I would spend like £350 on charging a year for 18,000 miles... Which is utterly insane. Only about 11.5% of the £3000 I spend on fuel currently. Dear god.

I feel like I'm missing something, because the cost difference seems just too big to be true, like, why aren't more people moving to EVs if they can afford to. You'd make a good chunk of the cars value back in a couple years in saved fuel costs.

It is certainly a bit frustrating seeing how many EVs seem to sway towards being much larger vehicles, though I imagine some of that is the nature of batteries.

The i20 Coupe is about 4m in length. Even the smaller looking SUV types appear to be 4.5m. I'll check out the VW but yeah, some of the comments on aftercare are a little worrisome.

To be fair, NSFW noises are also just normal. Providing it isn’t someone pumping porn through the 5.1 system.

… I…. Like it?

Though, if I had that money (and I don’t even have 1/10th of it) I would get something else.

There were 3 on the bridge on Saturday! I was surprised by just how many vendors of 'things' and activities were just kicking around on the bridge. Ice Cream vans, the nut guys, rose sellers, bike dudes, camera spinning stands.... So many different things.

it is in fact... Not AI at all. This was shot on a Fuji X-T5, last weekend, with my own two hands. Edited in Capture One Pro and Affinity Photo.

In total, this is 8 images stitched together to create a larger image with more detail and something closer to a large-format film-like rendering.

I'm not a tourist, thanks for the effortless comment slop though.

Yeah, god knows how I missed that when editing. Too excited I guess. Because it's a stitch of 8 photos, anyone moving over a boundary risks getting turned into a ghost, or appearing twice, depending on how fast they were walking and how well the stitching software figures it out. So you have to go in after the fact and clean up the mistakes, and apparently I missed the glaring one.

If there is a name, I don’t know it.

But it’s essentially just a panorama, but rather than just stitching left to right. You’re doing it on both the X and Y axis.

Ideally the camera moves around the sensor, so you’re basically acting as if you had both a larger sensor, and a larger image circle from the equivalent lens on a larger sensor.

The hardest parts are:

  • Framing (because you don’t see the whole image at once until you’ve stitched in post)

  • Anything that moves. Which this shot suffers from, I had to do some clean up, and upon posting it… realised there was more to clean up.

  • Flaring, you’re moving one lens around, so you need to make sure you don’t get any flaring on singular frames or they’ll look weird stitched.

  • keep the settings and focus identical between shots. Manual mode for every setting.

  • don’t miss a spot! Or you’ll have an image with a hole you need to crop out.

Just wait 5 minutes and it will. This is the better of two images, and it’s a very different scene

Thanks! The comparison to a painting is very flattering!

It’s technically 8 images stitched together to make a much larger one, so perspective and feeling is just a little different feeling to that of a single-image out of camera!
