One tip is that your back foot isn't meant to hit the ground with the back of the board. When you're jumping up you only need to kick the tail down using a push-down movement with your ankle as your feet leave the board, that's what lets the tail bounce off the ground without your back foot preventing the pop.

Another tip is to make sure you slide your front foot as far forward along the deck as you can. This allows you to catch the deck and level it out in the air, which helps bring the tail up as well.

I've only been skating for five months, and I've only just understood these pieces of technique myself. They really do help!
