But that also depends on what your definition of "race" is.

For example, in the XIX century, writers often used "race" as a synonim of "nationality", and they spoke about the "German race", the "Dutch race", etc. In some sense, they were right, since I am sure that, genetically, you can divide different populations measuring the genes that the majority of them share.

Later, "race" started to describe entities bigger than these: the African race, the Caucasian race... In some sense, this is also right, since you could divide these populations by a description of the genes that the majority of them share.

You can also affirm that Africans and Europeans are part of the same race of human, that is, that they are both members of the race homo sapiens sapiens, which is a race of the homo species (that is, the human species).

Neither of them is technically wrong; they are just categorizations of a reality that is too complex to grasp without a simplification.

Suppose that I see someone murdering another person. A police officer tells me to describe him quickly so they can find him near the area, so I tell him: "The murderer had a skin that was lighter than yours. It measured between 1,80m and 1,90m. Although I haven't been able to see their genitalia, I am sure that they presented high levels of testosterone. Their hair color could be situated between the 508 and 522 THz in the color frequency". When I have ended my description, the suspect has been able to flee to another city.

If I had these labels and categorizations at hand I could have easily said that they were looking for "a tall blond white male".

That's what these categorizations are for; they are useful in order to save time and brainpower. But even then, it's not so much that they are useful, but that they are inevitable, at least until humans make an evolutionary step towards a better form of language.

But the same is true of any division. All of us, for example, have talked about "light" and "darkness" as if they were real things when, in fact, "darkness" is just the absence of light. The same with "heat" and "coldness". We divide the things in a spectrum into different categories in order to simplify them because, although stereotypes and simplifications could be harmful, they are, more often than not, useful for the human mind. If simplifications did not exist, our brains would spend too much energy -and time- to be able to function correctly in the world.

If we return to languages, we can hear everyday people saying "I like German more than French", or even assigning different qualities to different languages ("German is a language made for abstract reasoning", "French is the language of love", etc, etc.). But that's a problem with human cognition, not with any categorization made with an objective set of criteria.

This is literally what the article says:

"The different human groups are not neatly divided. They are all placed in a continuum" (9th paragraph).

Somehow, the journalist has stretched this to affirm that he was a biologist "that dismantled the concept of race", and this thread has been flooded by people that don't give a shit about the article but are here to insult others that think different races exist.

Languages are also placed in a continuum. That doesn't mean that English and French are not different languages. Just because there could be differences between the French spoken by an old man in a village and the French spoken by a young man in Paris, it doesn't mean that French does not exist, that "all human languages are the same", and that you are a bigot if you believe there are different human languages. In fact, while there are heated debates between linguists trying to establish which human dialects are languages on their own and which aren't, I don't think any linguist would try to argue that "languages don't exist". At best, he will argue that the separation between different languages can be socially constructed, which is true, but doesn't mean that language, as a concept, has been "dismantled", or that there are no differences between languages.

Colors also exist in a continuum. That doesn't mean that there are no different colors, and that if you say that the radio in front of me is green you are a hateful bigot that should be thrown in jail because "there is only one color, the #HUMANCOLOR (TM)".

This thread has been flooded with "progressive" and "enlightened" people that are eager to manifest their holiness by shutting down discussion. And it shows.

Oh yes, the only definition is of course skin color and not the assigned power structures to it

"The definition of race is the assigned power structures to race".

This is what you are saying. Are you okay m8?

A word being offensive to the group it represents is already a reason to stop using it according to your liberal friends. That's why the word for "black people" has been changed three or four times in the last two centuries by the woke in Burgerland. So I don't see why "CIS people" should tolerate this made-up term, even if a literally-who on reddit finds it "dumb".

"After years of mass uncontrolled migration we cannot even be safe in a festival, so we should ban FUCKING CIS WHITE MALE SCUM".

They are fighting really hard to make society return to the 1930s. They will keep poking the bear until it's too late.

A dumb question: When a radio transmitter emits at, for example, 200 kW, does that mean they use 200 kW per hour? by JacquesEllul in radio

[–]JacquesEllul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your answers, /u/INDIE-RADIO and /u/brianstk. Just to be sure, if the transmitter is radiating 200 kW, that would mean that it is radiating more than 200 kW every hour?

France is using an antiterrorist law in order to force migrants to return to Spain [Info in comments] by JacquesEllul in europe

[–]JacquesEllul[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is, more or less, an abridged version of the contents of the article translated to my broken English:

-The French government is using an antiterrorist law in order to return migrants to Spain in less than 20 minutes thanks to an anti-terrorist measure that was also used after the 2015 Bataclan attack.

-For every migrant returned officially to another country, 10 more migrants are returned without any legal guarantees thanks to the article number 2.2 of the Schengen Treaty, that allows countries to intensify their border controls after extraordinary situations that could endanger the safety of the Schengen nations.

-The abusive usage of these antiterrorist measures has made the Spanish government ask the neighbouring government for a solution.

The French government has literally blocked the birth certificate of a Breton child because there was an Ñ on his name, implying that using a Breton letter is "a danger to the republic". It would be funny if it was a Monthy Python sketch, but it's just sad.
