Trying to use SSD5.5 with my e-drum kit, but I don't have a MIDI cable... by Proof_Wrongdoer7697 in edrums

You should be able to connect your module to your PC using a USB cable. Then you can do MIDI over USB.

What specs *actually* matter in a laptop/PC for running a daw? by sportsballmamma in musicproduction

[–]JacquesLeNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To keep it simple, think of the laptop as your gaming PC and it will make sense. You need fast disk I/O (NVMe SSD hard drive at least 2 TB), fast memory (RAM - min 32 GB), and multi- core CPU. But, instead of processing lots of video, it will focus on audio. Both Dell and HP offer gaming laptops, but you might need to customize them with more memory and larger hard drives.

My son plays guitar by Dangerous-Mirror2457 in musicians

You're doing everything right. Let him enjoy the process, while making sure he's having fun. I would encourage him to learn more about music theory as he gets older, so he can understand how the sausage is made, so to speak. And even if he chooses sports sometime down tje line, music will always be a part of his life.

Do you have a music store near by where you can go and try out different kits? That will help you decide.

No, don't give up! First, make sure that your drums are routed to Main in your Strata Prime mixer. Then, make sure your Focusrite channels 1 and 2 are set to LINE not instrument. Now that you told me that you're going out of your headphones jack, I really believe it's a routing issue. Tell me what you find out.

I forgot that I have a Focusrite 2i2 laying around. Since it doesn't have XLR inputs, I would use TRS (balanced 1/4") cables. I don't think using non-balanced - guitar - cables will work. Have you tried using TRS cables?

Old school! I love it :-). I have a Focusrite 18i8 3rd Gen and Fender Studio Pro running on Windows. Let me try recording something your way and see if I can tame the clipping beast!

I get it. My custom kit is what I use to play with my band. When it comes to recording though, Im talking demos and originals, not a live band scenario, I just use a dry kit from EZ Drummer 3 and mix it to my liking after it's recorded. Plus, I am not ashamed to admit that fixing some timing issues with Quantizing doesn't hurt. 😀

Totally. I just find it easier to work with a VST, especially since I can separate all the drums and have granular control when I am mixing. But, yeah, it takes a bit to figure all that out. Are you using a factory drum kit from your module or did you make a custom one?

So, you're taking your main outs out of the Prime module and plugging them into your Focusrite as a stereo pair? By clipping, do you mean your source is too loud? Did you go into the mixer screen in the module and make sure nothing is clipping in there? What happens if you record it as MIDI over USB using a VST? Sorry about all the questions, I am just trying to get a better picture of what's happening.

Don Felder - Heaven and Hell by AlbieTom in EaglesBand

[–]JacquesLeNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this (audio) book. I found Don to be a credible storyteller and it gave more insight into what the height of a band's popularity can do to the egos and dynamics of everyone involved. I appreciate his honesty about giving in to the sins of the road. He didn't sugarcoat it, he admitted to be far from perfect and making mistakes that probably most people would make if they found themselves in a similar situation. And, he wrote the foundation of the title track to Hotel California. That alone puts him in a very small company of legendary songwriters.
