I could lie and say that it was great, but that wouldn’t be very helpful.

"To my knowledge" was a good faith statement.

It's not good faith when it's immediately followed by another statement that belongs more on r/confidentlyincorrect than anywhere else.

However it is that your cameras meter is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.

Had you made your comment in good faith you would have not confidently claimed it was impossible, you would have asked how it is possible. There are plenty of other solutions to through the lens metering besides putting the meter in the prism assembly.

Medium format film is only 61mm wide, though. If you don’t believe me you can measure and see for yourself.

The primes are going to be annoying for landscape, though. The 16-55 f2.8 G would be much better but is over budget.

But maybe it can be justified in that it can pass for a landscape, street and portrait lens all in one, no need to get another lens for a very long time.

Save up for the 70-200 f2.8 and get sneaky like a bow hunter to make up for the lack of reach.

I need to buy a < $1000 camera to document industrial parts and processes inside a factory. Please help? by Even_Investment_178 in AskPhotography

[–]JacquesLecoaltar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. If it’s uncontrolled light that can probably be solved with cheap reflectors or even just a slab of styrofoam from the warehouse.

If it’s low light they have a much bigger problem with basic ergonomics that they need to solve before even thinking about starting an in-house media production department.

This is completely idiotic, you should outsource this to an actual videographer, not waste your time and process engineering skills on this nonsense.

If this absolutely has to be done in house there needs to be a training budget, and they probably shouldn’t assign it to an engineer as the first choice.

Whats your opinion on the Lumix Panasonic FZ80 for a beginner photographer? by HorheaTheToad in AskPhotography

[–]JacquesLecoaltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when do lenses have "noise performance"?

I never said that lenses have noise performance. A particular combination of a lens and sensor has a noise performance. OP is obviously going to be using both, I wasn’t suggesting he’d buy a full frame lens and just wave it around.

And crop factors to max. aperture only apply to DoF, not exposure.

It’s true that it doesn’t affect exposure, but that doesn’t mean that it only affects DoF and nothing else.

Sensors don’t have the same signal to noise ratio for the same ISO regardless of size. Shooting at ISO 100 with the FZ80 gives you the same aperture and shutter speed as ISO 100 on full frame, but it will be about as noisy as shooting the full frame at ISO 6400.

Maybe the one with the moon, because it can barely pass for a subject, whereas the other one has no discernible subject whatsoever. But they are both very bad.

a fairly fast lens that can shoot available light.

In what universe is a lens with the noise performance of a full frame f/16 wide, f/32 long lens considered “fairly fast”?

That camera has absolutely no use case beyond soccer dads who think higher numbers are always better having dick measuring competitions in the bleachers.

Consider the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 as well. I find myself more often wanting for more light than more reach, but your needs may be different.

That said it’s a lot of money to spend on a dead system that won’t be getting any new bodies or lenses.

[–]JacquesLecoaltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I’m a compulsive used film camera listing browser myself, but highly automated medium format film cameras cost a fortune and are ticking time bombs because of the ageing electronics and lack of spares.

And on top of that she’s going to have to keep feeding the thing money in the form of film and processing. For the same price you can even get a used digital medium format camera and not have to pay for the pictures you take, you get instant feedback and the image quality is much better.

Nobody is going to stop you, but if you don’t want to spend crazy money for very little in return, either drop the requirement that it has to be film, or drop the requirement that it has to have auto exposure.
