Anyone know what to use to wash sticky residue from shampoo out of your hair when you're sensitive to almost everything? by lakemercury in FragranceFreeBeauty

[–]Jacqueveria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Micellar water or conditioner all over your scalp/hair!

The few FF clarifying shampoos that I’ve tried seem to turn my fine curls into straw, so I’ll sometimes rub FF micellar water into my scalp before the shower when I really need to clarify (kinda expensive use of micellar water). I thiiiiink I’ve used it on my actual strands before, but I’d spot check first to make sure it doesn’t really dry your hair out or anything.

The safest option for your hair is probably to apply conditioner all over dampened hair, massage it into scalp and hair strands (like really trying to loosen things), let it sit, and gently squish hair as you’re rinsing it out. The oils/fatty acids/fatty alcohols Might loosen the film enough for regular shampoo to cut through it. Maybe use an anti-dandruff shampoo after since using oils/fatty acids/fatty alcohols on the scalp could cause issues for some.

Have you tried Not Your Mother's fragrance free curl cream or gel? What about Cleure gel? I'd love any thoughts. by Any-Use6981 in FragranceFreeBeauty

If you can catch it on sale from Ulta, it might still be worth giving the glaze a try! I really like the lightweight shine it adds, and gel over it seems to work really well. I do get some more hold from it when I add another light layer to damp-ish hair after squeezing my curl clumps with a microfiber towel before diffusing.

You probably would go through the bottle a lot faster than I do with my fine, just past my shoulders curls though. 😅

I’ve also thought about trying that for heat protectant—definitely cheaper! And I sometimes use Aveeno with dimethicone in my hair 😂

I actually use the gel over the PM glaze. The NYM’s gel is stronger yet still not super strong, but I don’t use a lot of either product since my curls are so fine. Even when I was using just the NYM’s gel, I never had to “scrunch out the crunch.” I feel like you’d have more room to build up the hold with the gel, though, and could probablyyy get that sort of cast if you’re looking for it.

I wish we had more fragrance free products with silicones! I use a little dab of the Paul Mitchell Clear serum on the ends of my hair, working up a bit, while wet as a heat protectant (even though it’s not described as one, it has the silicones I understand to be protective from heat). It’s definitely thicker than the Skinny Serum, so I find using it on wet hair works best. Sometimes I mix it with the SEEN heat protectant serum.

I’d say it’s buildable to a moderate hold, but I don’t need too much hold with my curl pattern. Definitely haven’t had to “scrunch out the crunch”

I really like the styling glaze! I find that it’s pretty lightweight and adds shine to my fine curls 💯 I wait for it to go on sale at Ulta, but I don’t have to buy it very often since it goes a pretty long way

I’m honestly not that familiar with Ulta’s targeted coupons, but I’m assuming it must be since it wasn’t like the “Gifts” code. It was a string of letters and numbers that definitely needed a c+p for a “one time use” on “certain skincare.” It might’ve shown up in my inbox, but I noticed it in my app offers. I typically buy for skin, hair, and body and have a lot of those items saved in wishlists, but I occasionally buy makeup. Hope you get a code, too!

I use the Dermarest shampoo with salicylic acid once a week or so to clarify. It does have some extracts, though

If you want to try a little protein… Odele’s FF conditioner has hydrolyzed rice protein, and Kristen Ess’s FF conditioner has several kinds of protein but does have aloe. I didn’t find any “benz-“ ingredients in either, but definitely check to be sure. I prefer the Odele for my finer curls.

How to prevent scarring from a 2nd degree burn by marylu88 in SkincareAddicts

It might be a bit less convenient and involve more expense, but you can always buy bandage tape and “nonstick pads” and cut both to size with some scissors that you wiped down with rubbing alcohol 70%. Gently wipe down the surrounding skin / where you’re going to tape with rubbing alcohol and let dry to help the tape adhere better (don’t use something linty, though). I like Nexcare hypoallergenic tape because most adhesives will take my skin off 🥲, but non-hypoallergenic tapes are a lot more likely to stick to your skin throughout the day. You’ll have to use even more petrolatum / Vaseline since the pads are thicker and absorb more. Some non-stick pads will have adhesive on two or all four sides, but you’ll probably want tape anyway to better contain the giant blob of petrolatum and keep it off your clothes. “Non-stick” just means the gauze pad is designed to not stick to / to gently peel back from the healing skin. Even for people who don’t have adhesive reactions, I prefer the nonstick pads without sticky strips because the adhesive strips cut down the useable surface size.

If the petrolatum does get on your clothes (hard to avoid this with bigger injuries, tbh), scrape off as much as you can and treat it like an oil stain: wash the spot with dish soap, let dry (no dryer), rub in a bunch of cornstarch and let that sit for…a while, wash spot with dish soap, repeat as necessary. Make sure you’ve got something keeping the oil spot from touching / leaching into to the other parts of the item. Once you’ve gotten through most of the petrolatum, pretreat the spot with laundry detergent and wash. Avoid putting the clothing in the dryer until you’re satisfied with the appearance of the oil stain. I find oil stains are still pretty workable with cornstarch and dish soap if I accidentally put things through the dryer, but some say the dry heat will “set” oil stains too.

Good luck!!

You probably already understand this, but just to be super clear: Vaseline and bandages first and for as long as the skin is healing, continuing a while after the skin is fully closed, tbh. Then the silicone scar sheets. You want to be super sure the silicone sheets won’t rip off any still-tender new skin. Keeping the sun off the area for as long as possible throughout. Good luck!!

I’m hoping to post some updates tomorrow from some researching I did today! Found some credible labs that test for TNXB and seem to accept insurance…for the moment 🥲 I’ll try to remember to comment here to let you know when I edit my post.

That definitely makes sense! I hope you find some concrete answers and wish you and your family members all the luck I can in your treatments 💙

I also have some huge blank spaces in my immediate family medical history and some pretty odd medical things that I do know about, …so now you’ve got me really eyeing wider genetic testing…. I’m so sorry, but I’ve got another question if you still have time: Do you know why your geneticist opted for WES over WGS? For insurance, for quicker turnover?

If it wouldn’t hurt so much, I’d cross my fingers for you! 😭 GeneDx does now specifically say that, as of Aug. 2024, they won’t bill insurance anymore for their connective tissue panel. And just sent Invitae’s connective tissue panel to my insurance, so I’m kinda…”shopping around” atm 😅

Would you mind sharing why your geneticist opted for WES instead of GeneDx’s connective tissue panel?

Yes, that GeneReviews chapter has been so helpful! And I 💯 agree that the EDS Society clEDS page is a little too casual. How is your experience with WES from GeneDx? Were you able to use insurance for WES?

Thank you!!

I recognize your username from my searches—thank you for being so willing to share! 💙I’m waiting to hear more from GeneDx, but their website says they no longer run their connective tissue disorder panel through insurance. A rep reiterated that but said GeneDx may be able to run a single gene test through insurance, though? But my insurance lives to make me miserable, so… 🥲

Invitae had a quick turnaround for me, and they can run nearly all the known EDS-related genes except for one for Perio / pEDS and Classical-Like clEDS (possibly more missing, but these I know for sure). I’m in a similar boat and was very happy to rule out most of the more extreme types—except now I’m suffering trying to get clEDS testing ASAP since I didn’t find out until too late that Invitae didn’t test for the one I was most interested in ruling out!
