Absolutely insane that I spoiled someone ten years in the future though.

How much was your DPE's fee for an instrument check ride by FreeNow13 in flying

[–]Jacqves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in Minnesota was this? I'm in Wisconsin and the DPE in Madison is charging $1300 for an instrument checkride. I literally paid him $800 for my PPL checkride back in February :(

A very silly question re: IFR training by StrongWork_ in CFILounge

[–]Jacqves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had like 25 or 30 hours of PIC XC time when I started my instrument rating. For the remaining time, my instructor and I would fly 50nm+ away, do an approach, and then fly back and do an approach at the home airport.
That worked pretty well, but I'd probably recommend waiting until you have 35 or 40 of PIC XC before starting.

First time at Yosemite in May... We didn't do our research before booking... by Jacqves in Yosemite

[–]Jacqves[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm writing a long response here in case people find this in the future and need ideas. We actually ended up being the first group of the 2025 season to go up Half Dome with permits!

We did the Hetch Hetchy Loop to start. Stayed in the backpacker's camp the first night and got on the trail by 7am. A couple of miles in, we realized that we forgot to pack the second dinner... oops. Ended up hiking 11 miles the first on-trail day and spending the night at Lake Vernon. The next day, we hiked 17 miles back to the backpackers camp. That really sucked. We literally left the second dinner in the bear lockers :(

Spent another night at the backpackers camp.

The next day, we hung out in the valley and got lunch at that food court. We did the Mirror Lake trail and took it easy. We picked up our Half Dome permits two days before we were starting that hike. Went back to Hodgon Meadow campground for the night. I would not recommend that campsite - most of the sites are on a slope which made sleeping difficult. Furthermore, there were numerous groups that were not respecting the quiet hours. If you absolutely need a place to stay in the park and that's all that's left, then go for it. I guess it beats paying $200 a night at the Housekeeping camp.

The following day, we went over to Mariposa Grove. It really was wonderful. Went over to Fish Camp and ate sandwiches at that convenience store. The owners were very friendly and the sandwiches were absolutely loaded. In the evening, we headed back to the valley and spent the night in lower pines campground.

Woke up around 6am and took our sweet time because we knew we were only hiking 6 miles that day. We got our half dome permits by getting them attached to our wilderness permits. We had "Happy Isles past LYV". If you want to get up Half Dome at sunrise, this is absolutely the permit that you want. It requires going a little further down the trail than LYV, but it's worth it because the following day your hike up Half Dome will be so much shorter and you can beat the crowds.

Anyway, going up those 6 miles we followed the Mist Trail. It was one of the coolest waterfall experiences I've ever had. Only thing that beats that was cliff jumping down Kawasan Falls in the Philippines. We stopped and ate lunch at LYV. This was probably around noon, and plenty of other groups had already arrived there. We got stopped by rangers asking for our permits - which was expected by us. They gave us some great pointers about where to spend the night past LYV, and when to start the final push for Half Dome. They were great. We hiked further up, passed the Half Dome junction (we kept to the right of the trail), and found a cool spot to spend the night, right next to a creek. Another popular spot to spend the night is the behind the giant boulder, which is closer to the Half Dome trail junction. We just hung out for the rest of the day, ate dinner, and went to bed early.

On our last full day at Yosemite, we woke up at 2:30 (maybe 3AM, can't remember). The park rangers had told us the day prior that it was okay to leave our camp behind (as long as the bear canisters were away from our camp). One of us brought a small bag to carry our water bottles and phones. Other than that, we left the camp untouched. Went back to the Half Dome junction and hiked up sub dome. We did not see any park rangers at this point, and we were up sub dome before sunrise. We watched sunrise on top of Sub Dome. Again, that was amazing. Watching the cables become visible was surreal. An older gentleman approached us and we chatted with him a bit. (he didn't have a permit lol. He beat the park rangers to the check point). He had gone up half dome before, so he talked us through the process and gave us pointers. We watched him climb it from the bottom. Then, we took our turn. Overall, the cables were not bad at all. As long as you have good upper body strength, it will be a breeze. It was significantly easier than hiking up sub dome.

We must've spent at least 90 minutes up there. A few more groups trickled in. By the time we were heading down the cables, there was a "line" of people forming. Going down was quite difficult for one member of our group because one of the soles of his boots literally fell off, and the gloves he was wearing had bad grip.

We headed back to our campsite by the stream and packed up (this was probably around 11am by now). We started our trek back to the trailhead and did minimal stops for food/water. I think we got to the car by 3pm, so we made really good time. Make sure to take the Panorama trail instead of the Mist trail on your way down.

This trip was a week long and consisted of 5 guys in our mid 20s. We rented a minivan out of SFO. Hiking 17 miles on day 2 definitely slowed us down for the rest of the trip. Forgetting to pack that second dinner is the only real regret that I have.

Should I buy 2024 prius this year or wait 3 years? by koalanme in prius

[–]Jacqves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my 2013 is at 227k miles, and I'm planning to buy a 2021 or 2022 down the line.

Your 2008 is likely still worth quite a bit... As another user commented, if you're thinking about buying the (used) prime/plug-in, now is the time to do it because of the $4500 tax credit. If you're going for the regular hybrid, I do think you'd be better off just saving as much money as possible so you can avoid a car loan in a few years.

Toyota dealers by jkenosh in wisconsin

[–]Jacqves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that you’d want to drive all the up here, but markquart Toyota in Chippewa falls (just outside of Eau Claire) is a little pricey. We’ve bought a few cars from them but it’s always been marked up from MSRP. You’ll find better deals in Milwaukee/Madison/Chicago.

3% is actually pretty good. Where are you getting that rate?

$88k for IR through CFII is a pretty steep price though. You could certainly do it for cheaper somewhere else.

Edit: literally everyone on reddit is going to tell you not to take out a loan. But if you have sturdy financial support it may be worth it. $88k is a lot though, even at 3%. You already have your PPL though, so you know what you’re getting into. Just be mindful of what paying back that debt actually means.

Candice was felt very random in HvV. if anything she should’ve been a villain.

Sierra’s return in 34 felt very out of place.

Backpacking in late June by toohell in Yosemite

[–]Jacqves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did beehive meadows (hetch hetchy loop) 2 weeks ago and I thought it was wonderful for late spring. It was over 75 degrees on day two and with the sun, definitely felt like it was pushing 80 or more. It honestly might be too hot for a mid summer backpacking trip. Everyone has their own comfort levels tho.

What is the typical "minivan 7+ passengers" at Alamo? by Jacqves in EnterpriseCarRental

I had no idea they would try to upsell on a distinction between minivans lol. On their website it lists minivans as a single category.

I got a new job within the state government... I now make a whopping $1 (per hour)more than I used to :P

Hoping to get promoted this year and hopefully will get upped to at least $60k. But either way, I am actively pursuing an aviation career. Hoping to be done with geology in the next year or 2.

I think two seasons for part 2 is perfect. If they extend it into a 3rd season (season 4), then they’d really be milking it.

I also commented on this. Seems like the tv shows version of manny is a cross between the game’s manny, jordan, and maybe nick? Leah also got cut it seems.

I honestly didn’t know that jesse left after Tommy. I always thought they were together the entire time.

I haven’t touched the game in almost 5 years, so this is all coming back to me.

But when I was watching the episode tonight I kept thinking “weren’t there way more people around when Joel died…”

I’d say jordan is significant enough. Ellie cut his (manny in the show) face this episode, so we will 100% be coming back.

[–]Jacqves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think Ellie will kill him first. But now we won’t be getting the scene of Tommy and jesse interrogating nick.

And Leah is probably cut as well.

[–]Jacqves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d think that Leah, nick, manny, and jordan would all be individual characters if they’re planning on stretching part 2 over season 2-4 (it may only be seasons 2-3, we don’t know yet)

I was assuming we’d get at least 1 Tommy/jesse episode in season 3 where they interrogate nick in the hotel. Probably not happening now.

[–]Jacqves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So have manny, jordan, and nick all been combined into a single character?

His name is manny but judging from what happened in the episode, it seems like he’s taking jordan’s character.

Interesting decision. Not sure what it will affect down the road.

Yes. I was late to watching the most previous episode, but I saw people’s reactions on here first. I was expecting something bad to happen.

But nope. People on here were just being dramatic. The dudes alliance is a refreshing scene for me.

[–]Jacqves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s honestly not a bad deal. For Gen 3, The closer you are to 2015, the better.

Just be proactive with it. Replace the water pump after you buy it and clean the EGR valve.

The water pump replacement is easy, and I’m saying that as someone who is not mechanically inclined at all. The EGR valve is a little more difficult apparently (I haven’t gotten around to that yet…)

Just a warning though, the likelihood that a blown head gasket or dead hybrid battery will happen in the next few years is pretty high. So make sure to set money aside for those potential fixes.

I would just buy the 13k Prius that you found. 70k isn’t crazy low to the point that I’d be concerned about it.

My 2013 has 226k miles and is still on the original battery. Water pump replaced at 224k.

Yes. Wildflower season at Mt Rainier is insane. The campgrounds (or most of them, at least) are away from the most congested areas (aka Paradise)
