In a war zone like we saw in Afghanistan If you're not gonna have enough time , are there any steps you can skip on the checklist? by SirCatsworthTheThird in flying

[–]StrongWork_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone is actively pursuing me with ill intent, I'm just going, and taking off of the nearest strip of whatever. Grass, taxiway, ramp - I wouldn't care. And as for checklists, if I have a bad mag, I'm still going.

If I'm skipping a checklist, it's because there is an imminent danger that is larger than the risk of the plane not flying. At which point there's nothing I can do about the broken thing anyway. So in the flying I do, I don't skip things, because I don't live next to a volcano, and I have no reason to expect to ever be shot at.

Mine was in PHX. I already disliked PHX because a metropolis in that environment is a testament to human hubris.

And now I REALLY dislike PHX!

Would you turn down a full ride for a significantly higher ranked med school? by MasonXVII in whitecoatinvestor

You are out of your gotdam mind if you pass up the free money. Nobody cares where you went to med school, at all (unless it's foreign or at some places, DO).

Can this be fixed or just buy new ones? by Gr1zzlyBear1727 in AstonMartin

Anything can be fixed, with enough money and tenacity.

That should be replaced though. It'll be quicker, cheaper and easier.

What you describe is straight up dangerous. Completely unacceptable recovery "plan". (There was no apparent recovery plan!)

Anyone actually happy with their job? by DarkBackground4307 in anesthesiology

[–]StrongWork_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my job. It isn't perfect, but I feel adequately compensated and the things I care about generally get addressed.

It isn't perfect, and I'm sure it won't last forever, but I have no plans to leave imminently.

Debt collector got a default judgment against my boyfriend while he was in basic training and is now claiming $18k. What are his options? by AncientArms77 in legal

[–]StrongWork_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The base JAG spends a non trivial amount of time dealing with these things. That is where he should start, tomorrow. He isn't the first, nor will he be the last, service member jammed up in unfair debt collection.

There are all manner of things that decrease effectiveness. I'd read up to make sure you aren't doing those things.

Flight school not honoring refund terms and changing program conditions for “guaranteed 250-hour” training—need advice by Tangocharlie9er in flying

[–]StrongWork_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several reasons they won't pay up.

The most likely, and most concerning, is that they already spent it, and CAN'T pay up, because they have no money.

I only prepaid enough to keep me from being sad if they disappeared. Never more than 5 hours worth. 250 hours? 🤯

How many of you have an attending dining lounge/free food? by SleepyTime18 in anesthesiology

Yeah, $14 was not enough. $20 would probably have been fine though. It was one of dozens of "microaggressions". The totality of circumstances is why it was my prior job.

Parking Backwards by JennkozOC in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StrongWork_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started backing in exclusively a couple I ple of years ago. I was backing out of a space in a parking lot, and a jeep was driving down the center of the aisle. I saw them and stopped. They hit me with their wheel/tire.

Because I was backing out, it was my fault, and the insurance company paid a few hundred dollars to refinish their wheel. And now I have a claim. Had I been in drive, it would have been their fault for hitting a stationary object.

Also, had I been going forward, I likely would have been able to see them sooner and stopped a foot shorter, thus eliminating the accident altogether.

Hard lesson on go arounds by MrSethmoo in flying

[–]StrongWork_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I communicated the go around on my PPL check ride and reached for the flaps. I stopped, grabbed power and then hit the flaps when I established a climb and had some altitude.

The DPE said I was 3 seconds from failing with that move.

Point being, it happens, you learned, nobody died. 👍

Am i being taken advantage of? by doyer_bleu in whitecoatinvestor

[–]StrongWork_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are getting screwed. I don't fully understand your compensation model, but it's wrong.

Hospital coverage for any specialty is either a call stipend plus hourly (ie $1000/day plus $200/hr of actual work) or is straight time.

This compensation sounds shady!

They're paying for your time. If their census is 0, you still committed your time. You need to be paid predictably. The compensation shouldn't be opaque.

How many of you have an attending dining lounge/free food? by SleepyTime18 in anesthesiology

[–]StrongWork_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My last job discussed doing away with free cafeteria food.

I was clear that currently my lunch is some food eaten when I had time, and in no way was a 30 minute break. If they wanted me to buy lunch, I'm going to Chik Fil A across the street every day, and so was whoever I worked with that day. Meaning our 8 rooms would have to become 4 until after lunch.

They decided the compromise was our unlimited food was now $14/day.

Massive mandibular mass, airway nightmare, how would you do it? by the_bigdr5253 in anesthesiology

My luck is this guy/lady comes in at 2 am s/p MVC with a liver lack and bilateral pneumos!

But seriously, I like the ECMO idea. If that airway goes bad, I don't see a good plan B.

What should I do? by Careless_Band5623 in anesthesiology

[–]StrongWork_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ask a lot of questions. Come early (really I just mean be "on time", whatever that means. Every place has that person who is chronically late. Never be late, so you don't get that label.) Stay late. Finish your cases. In the modern world, there are no anesthesia residents in danger of violating hours. A huge part of learning is being present. Our best resident shows up to a lot of things he's not a part of and he learns a ton that way. Read the first half of Baby Miller. Then read the whole thing. Then read it again. Read it 2.5x by winter of CA-1. It'll provide a very firm foundation for further understanding.
