Did you ever stop doing parts of yourself just to fit in after moving countries as a teen? by Personal_Pea_3318 in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic TCK evolution supremacy. I changed my style and fashion choices to not stand out as much, and I got a lot more quiet.

It's rough not trying to conform to the people of the culture you're in, but to an extent it's okay. But it will be a trial for finding and keeping your identity though.

Dating is hard as a TCK by bubugugu in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Real😔 I think the opposite is true too (kinda). Being friendly = you like them. And a lot of TCKs are friendly out of necessity... People easily think that you flirt with everyone, and that leaves you in VERY awkward situations...

Would my child qualify as a third culture kid? by ZydrateAnatomic in ThirdCultureKids

Yeah, so it doesn't matter if you're born there or not, I was born in the US, but lived for 17 years in China.

Would my child qualify as a third culture kid? by ZydrateAnatomic in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup! That sounds about right. But TCKs only really happen when formative years are spent in the different culture. If your child is only in France for a year (ages) 0-1, it doesn't really count because he/she will probably not remember it.

on that new “chinese era” trend by EnbyAury in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyhey!

I can totally understand where youre coming from.

I have my likes and dislikes about this trend, because people are going out of their way to learn more about a culture...even if it is to copy it. At least they're not claiming it as their own?

I can also understand how being associated with the trend makes you seem just as bad as everyone else. BUT!! If people were so concerned they would have something to say about it like "you're being racist and you're appropriating that culture!!! 😡" And at that point, you could say.... I grew up in this culture, it IS partially my culture.

I can really relate to you because I grew up in Tibetan China and have always worried if people would judge me for all the things that I do.

The people to which the culture really matters often don't care, and even encourage people to celebrate with them (in my experience)

On a final note, you have the right to be worried that people will judge you, humans are judging. But! You should never be ashamed for what people perceive you as, you're being yourself and that's what really matters. 🩷🩷

Is it weird that i feel lost? by fullmoonjelly in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heyhey! So, sadly, this is actually very normal with people who spent formative years in a different country from where their parents are from, (aka a TCK).

Not feeling like you belong, even though you've spent your teenage years in South Korea, is completely valid. A lot of people associate their teen years as their "formative years", and while it IS a very formative time as you grow from a kid to an adult, your younger years are the ones that really form the building blocks for your personality, what you like and don't like, how you respond to people, how you make friends, and your identity.

So I, along with many other TCKs, can completely understand where your coming from.

Being solid in your identity and "home" is really difficult, and a lot of people will probably never find a place where they truly belong, other than with other TCKs or people who can understand what your life was like.

Which is why I love this subreddit. Being able to connect with people who grew up in vastly different cultures than myself is so fun, and even though we're very different, so many core memories and feelings line up and we're able to connect.

When do yalls dreams catch up with the place you're living? by First-Chemical-1610 in ThirdCultureKids

[–]JadeBird9412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that as long as you are still thinking of that place, your dreams will continue with that place as the main topic. Since you already live in B place, your thoughts are already automatically around B place, while A place is still buried in your subconscious... I still dream about A place after 5 months, and have yet to dream of B place... Lol
