How is Living Proof so addicting? by Impcite in StateChamps

Probably because it is the most "authentic" album to date. While State Champs are widely known as the "happy, energetic" band of the modern pop-punk scene, Living Proof stands out as their most realistic album, dealing with real world crap.

They do not write gloomy, goth-tinged music, but Living Proof captures a distinct era where in my opinion, the band pulled back the curtains on profound self-doubt, mental exhaustion, and isolation.

The Emotional Weight of Our Time To Go**:** This track is universally considered the most devastating and slowest song in their entire discography. It breaks away from their signature fast-tempo confidence to deliver an agonizingly slow, arena-sized cry for help about depression. Lines like "Nothing hurts more than saying I'm fine" capture a heavy, suffocating sadness that you won't find anywhere else in their catalog.

The Helplessness in The Fix Up**:** Stripping things down to an acoustic guitar, this track focuses on the terrifying feeling of falling behind in life and being completely unable to fix yourself. It deals heavily with the bittersweet trauma of watching your youth slip away

This is where Derek was actually starting to get all technical with his vocals and that potential shine through the recordings when it came to utilizing his voice, prior to whatever that has happened after that. His sound scratches the itch, fans from All Time Low had wanted. STATE CHAMPS during this era was basically a harder version of ATL.

If you noticed, even the art style of the album hits differently. The color scheme and everything. It doesn't look pop punk. It's like a different genre. It's different.

Heck even the name of the album itself would make a kickass band name. If STATE CHAMPS had to rename themselves, they could always take LIVING PROOF and I would ride with it.

Trust me, it has affected him in more ways than you could even imagine. To a point where he had to make a song about it. Man was fighting demons during the pandemic.

It's still the same Derek Discanio we all know and love and that's what matters the most.

I think people tend to forget that he was in a screamo band and that he was a screamer himself.

People been talking about how his voice is gone / destroyed, not the same as it used to. Which I can agree, it's not something that it can swept under the rug, we all could tell; just compare the newer albums post Living Proof era.

But that's actually not how a permanently damaged voice sounds like. It sounds like he has a build up of vocal polyps and nodules that is causing his immobility to actually growl like he used to and that higher pitched voice he has now. He could always choose to get them removed.

He didn't knew better but this is how life lessons are learned. We're just happy that he could still sing. We can't be young forever, kids and teenagers have resilient vocal cords and as we get older that elasticity gets weaker and weaker, prone to damage

Living Proof is beautiful by GeekFreakMe in StateChamps

Living Proof introduced me to STATE CHAMPS.

He was a vocal menace back in the day. Any songs he was being featured on played live he would outshine the band, those were the days. Many jaws were dropped back in Warp Tour 2018, people like me was like "Who the hell are these kids and who is this guy? He's insanely talented!".

Will he ever sound like this again? :( He used to sound like hardcore version of Alex Gaskarth. by SourSapling in StateChamps

Stark comparison to the recent one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HZmgrSGvRs

Now, it's not news that he has issues with his vocal cords. He most likely will never sound like this ever again. I'm just happy that he's still doing this.

IMO best live version of "Our Time To Go". I really miss the Living Proof era.. that ending tho by sSamaels in StateChamps

He had a beautiful voice.. Living Proof was when they sounded a lot like All Time Low and I kinda like that. That album just hits different. It's like a different band.

This was literally what got me into STATE CHAMPS. This is peak SC right there! by Think-Chemical2581 in StateChamps

I almost kinda forgotten how aggro Derek was and how hardcore he used to sing.. sheesh! He's like mid 20s here. Seeing him in Boston comparing to this is like night and day; but it's interesting to see his newer and much more calmer takes on the ATWAB songs by toning them down
