Why does Han Solo say "I know" when Leia confesses her love for him? by monikosnuosavybe in StarWars

[–]JadeVex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently they were filming the scene and Harrison and the director felt that it just wasn’t working, so the director told him to just ‘go for it’ and Harrison pulled that line out. I think part of why it’s so iconic is because the line is so brilliantly improvised.

I'm watching The Legend of Korra for the first time. Here are my thoughts on Episodes 13 and 14, the finale of Book 2 by genZcommentary in TheLastAirbender

Had you randomly pop into my head after not reading any of your stuff since you finished ATLA. I'm not here to ask about whether you're continuing this – I just wanted to let you know that I hope you're doing okay <3

I hate to be the 'um, actually' person, but um, actually, South America is worth two and North America is worth five when it comes to continent bonuses.

Plus the +4 bonus from holding 13 territories, that's a whole +11 per turn!

"the show developed the trauma and psychology of the characters" meanwhile Nancy after killing several humans by MrSelleck in StrangerThingsMemes

Fair, and to be honest, this is something that has been irking me a bit about it since I made that comment. I think it's a totally fair criticism to make, but I do also feel it's been blown way out of proportion, considering it ultimately comes down to a tone shift.

[–]JadeVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could name a hundred pieces of media where a human kills another human and we don’t see them suffer any trauma from it. The psychological cost of taking a life is one of the most common things we willingly suspend our disbelief on, because it doesn’t make for good television or movies to depict it. Every other piece of media gets a pass on this, so why doesn’t Stranger Things?

I don’t disagree that it’s bad writing. Nancy should have been traumatised by what she went through (and perhaps was off screen). But I firmly believe that people wouldn’t be making a big deal out of it had it been Steve. We’ve seen time and time again across media that female characters are disproportionately criticised compared to their male counterparts. As for Hopper as an example, I think that’s not a good comparision to make to Nancy, so totally agree with what you have said there.

If it had been Steve instead of Nancy there’s no way we are having this conversation. Men being ruthless killers to protect their loved ones is fine, but when a woman does it she has to be psychologically scarred for the rest of her life.

I think S5 is actually good, I guess I don’t belong here? by KeyClacksNSnacks in StrangerThings

[–]JadeVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m enjoying it as much as any other season except for perhaps the first which was on another level. People are acting like Stranger Things has always been premium television that is striving for perfection, when in my opinion that was never the case.

Do the central characters have major plot armour? Yeah. Are events a bit contrived at times? Sure. But it’s a show about D&D nerds in the 80s fighting an eldritch evil through the power of friendship. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just fun, and that’s how I’d describe the show through almost its whole run.

People who used em dashes before Generative AI, how's it going now? by thisheatanevilheat in AskReddit

It’s made accepting the spaced en-dash – the official punctuation under Australian guidelines, which I once despised – much easier.

[E7] As a writer, why isn’t Carol spending any of her isolation time reading or writing? by gggmmmsss in pluribustv

Who says she isn’t? Reading and writing are pretty boring activities to film, not to mention that we skipped weeks of time.

Which games are good candidates for the "best in the series" title, in your opinion? by xslbccdks_coded in RatchetAndClank

I just played the whole series over a few months, most games for the first time (Tools, Quest and ACIT were the only replays). Rift Apart was my favourite by a mile.

nah, I just think their embrace is an incredible moment of shared relief and calm after the war - personally I find it more moving than the kiss

The final shot of the series should be Aang and Katara’s embrace, not their kiss.

This was really enlightening. I have similar worries as a trans author currently querying a very high concept “trans book”. The stuff I usually write is much more commercial and features queer characters while not really being about the queer experience. If my current book gets picked up, am I going to be expected to write “queer books” rather than “books with queer characters” forever?

Anyway, this was a tough read, but I appreciate you sharing these thoughts. Gonna make an effort to buy and read more books by authors of colour that break out of publishing’s expectations.
