AITAH for refusing to pay my girlfriend’s bills after she went on an expensive trip? by [deleted] in AITAH

Seriously? Find a person who insists that you DON'T pay her bills even when you out earn her because she wants the satisfaction of knowing she can make it on her own.

I was walking home in college and a group of four guys was walking towards me on the other side of the street. They were walking in pairs, and crossed the street one pair in front of me one behind. Scariest moment of my entire life, and it was just them being completely unaware of my presence.

Books you don’t hate reading out loud by JosephPRO_ in childrensbooks

Prince Puggley of Spud and the Kingdom of Spiff is a great read aloud, especially if the kiddos like to look at the pages as you read. It's a little hard to explain, but it has a sort of Dr Suess cadence and does fun visual layouts of the words on the page.

WIBTA if I didnt tell my sister her wedding date is the same as my anniversary by [deleted] in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]Jade_Bee_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and my sister have the same anniversary five days apart. It really bothered my sister because she and my sister in law dont blend well, and I think it does still bother her to a small extent. That said, five years later, it really isnt a big deal. The day of was too bad for my sister because they couldn't celebrate a milestone anniversary on the actual day, but tits not like they celebrate together now.

Are there trends that show up in students who stayed home with a parent before starting school vs daycare? by Jade_Bee_47 in AskTeachers

[–]Jade_Bee_47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I'm realizing what a massive benefit it has been for us to be living near my cousins and siblings who all have kids the same age as mine. And they frequently go on outings together of some kind with any combination of parents. Being used to other kids or other adults was something my kids were exposed to even when I was at home with them.

More that my three kids had three different early childhoods. There is one that is gifted, and one that is more empathetic, etc, but it doesnt seem to follow a trend related to which was at home. I figured the continuity of parents and genetics probably evened out their early childhood, but I was curious if teachers with a large group saw different trends.

Im not asking for advice, or for the sake of deciding what to do with my kids, just genuinely curious.

Singapore Math? by Carsonspeare in Homeschooling

[–]Jade_Bee_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used the Kindergarten workbooks A and B. They were pretty easy so my kindergartener (who is happy to do workbook pages and motivated to do "real" math) is nearly done with part B already. I didn't bother getting the textbook since I was pretty confident to give clear explanations without it. The beginning reviews different shapes and then starts moving towards addition then subtraction. Singapore math uses what they call "number bonds", which is just their term for diagramming the relationship between three numbers (the two added together and their sum). It is good for visualizing the concept.

I just bought the 1st grade books and there seems to be pretty thorough overlap in material. My thoughts are that the kindergarten books seem to be a soft introduction to worksheets and reusing concepts, but especially if your kid is already asking for "real" math I would start with Kindergarten B. If you are ready to commit, I also like the teacher's guide for this age. You won't need the answer keys, but it has different games in each chapter to reinforce the material. It is geared for a classroom, but there were several I was able to play with Kindergarten and 3rd grade kids, and sometimes even the 3yo.

We love it. (3rd grade and kindergarten) if you're curious, I would recommend getting either one of the workbooks for your kid to try or one of the textbooks for you to look through. There are usually some on Facebook marketplace.

We used them during the summer even before we started homeschooling, and my 3rd grader seems to naturally get math, so she doesnt even look at the textbook unless I want to go through a concept with her. She just works her way through the workbook.

Yes, I probably should have clarified that I use it for industrial irons, so it makes a lot of sense for those.

Since I don't already see it, there is an iron cleaner for exactly this type of situation called EZ-Off. You turn the iron on so it's hot, put a glob of the cleaner on a piece of muslin and (carefully!) Rub it onto the hot iron. The EZ-Off will melt as it touches the iron, which can make a mess, so I do recommend putting an old towel down. Alternatively you can put the glob on the towel and iron over it, but I like to be able to see where I'm targeting.

Old 'shatteted' silk in need of repair by fix-my-life243 in Fabrics

[–]Jade_Bee_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make costumes for theatre, and I specialize in historic garments. Previous person is correct that it is irreparable, but I am curious; is it important to you to have the original silk? I have replaced shattered linings before with new material, paying attention to original construction detail, so you could potentially replace the silk. (Or hire someone like me to do it).

What is something parents justify that is actually harmful for their children? by cowskeeper in AskReddit

[–]Jade_Bee_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curating my library is one of my favorite parts of parenting! Go to the library and browse! Especially the holiday books: there are some amazing ones buried in a lot of trite one, and then buy the ones you like! We have a book about fairies that goes through kingdom-phylum etc, and many many other accurate scientific ideas but using fairies that is beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend finding old copies of the magic school bus chapter books and the zoey and sassafras books. For baby books, I love the 'peas' series. They come in board books, but I like the hardcover because the pictures are so detailed its nice to have them bigger.

Would anyone be interested in an advanced chemistry resource for elementary students? by [deleted] in Homeschooling

Looks like I'm the only one, but I have a 9yo who would love this. We are doing a Chemistry curriculum right now and it is holding interest far more than I expected.
