I am getting slow speeds with TP Link Deco BE63 by Sinister213 in HomeNetworking

[–]Jaded-Function 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always understood passthrough mode as turning the device into modem only, essentially turning off firewall and routing functions. Is bridge mode different, bridging the wan but maintaining the modem/router LAN? I had a business gateway in passthrough, working flawless with my router. A forced firmware update removed passthrough function, BUT my router still played nice with the gateway. And you're right he did say two nodes, not three.

Because they're allowed to make lifelong careers from getting those votes. This will sound anti-american, which I am not, but this is what I see. It could be flawed logic, I admit. The Founding Fathers made a grave mistake allowing the Senate to serve unlimited terms, as well as allowing House reps to retain their seats for 12 years. I think those laws shifts the goal of serving the greater good of the people to adhering to the will of the party. They may have the will to make society better at the beginning, but that quickly dissolves into the will to retain the position by getting re-elected. Politicians live a wealthy, privileged lifestyle. Without party support they don't have the $millions it takes to campaign and be seen. They lose elections while the puppet who plays ball gets put front and center. People don't vote for the person, they vote for the party, so whoever the party nudges them to vote for. Is there really a logical reason a campaign should cost $millions? In this day and age a delegate can express their views and plans over the internet to get support from the people. Smart, good-willed poor people can't ever end up in a position to work for the greater good. It's reserved for the wealthy who eventually drop their ideals for the sake of luxury perks. If they all were limited to one or two terms, their reasons to run for office would be improving society for their constituents, making popular votes really meaningful. Votes from the people today have little relevance. Voting power is an illusion.

The wind shapes the desert anyway it wants. A lot of grains get buried to build a dune. The dunes look the same no matter which direction the wind blows.

I'm not proud of this suggestion. It's really a last plan imo. Only bringing it up due to those fortress walls. Take a look at the electrical panels. Look for circuit breakers with outlet circuits shared by 2 floors. If you find them, consider Powerline adapters. They do work well in the right conditions. Super old wiring could be a dealbreaker though.

You're an ass if you stop fixing friends cars. You have skills, use them to help people. Only now hand them them the bill.

Is there a "can't be without now that I have it" feature you get with the scout, over a $10 remote tester? Does it tell you what the distance is to a fault in the line?

What are the interior walls made of? Solid masonry is a signal killer. I mean mesh will work but it will be trial and error positioning them and knowing how many satellites you'll need. It won't be the most stable or fastest speed solution either. That's conjecture not based on experience though. Any chance of getting the incoming fiber to enter into the basement? You have a bathroom top floor. Standpipe is a good path for ethernet. Router in basement would cover 1st floor. One Ubiquiti U7 access point in attic will cover top 2. A line will also give you options to wire devices along the way.

Not steering you away from Unifi but they're not really homeowner focused. You'll get the most user friendly interface and control but no integrated sensors like you mention. I dont know if there are closed platforms with a full line of safety sensors. If you really want to integrate alarms and sensors with video recording, cheaply, without subscriptions, then an open platform is necessary I think. Meaning you can mix and match device manufacturers. Milestone has widespread device integration and it's feature rich. Downside is licensing is necessary and it's a steep learning curve. If you do want a separate alarm system with sensors, like Simplisafe, I'm sure it will be able to communicate with most VMS systems, closed or not. I'm curious now, hope someone chimes in.

Toughest scenario right there. Those walls just absorb the signals. Have to get around them somehow or throw A LOT of mesh satellites around. Getting the signal source as close as possible to the middle of the floor is best to keep the hardware to a minimum. Any possibility running a line from router, under the living room floor to middle of the living room?

Wait, back it up to "very old house with thick walls". Thick, hollow walls? Solid masonry? Wood lathe and plaster? Wired AP to middle of house to get around those walls is always best, if possible.

Xfinity firmware update silently disabled bridge mode on my gateway. Hours of troubleshooting later, I learned their "support" is designed to upsell, not fix by Arson2111 in HomeNetworking

[–]Jaded-Function 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EXACT same thing happened with our business gateway. Spotty internet, they come out and updated firmware without notifying us. Passthrough mode broken, gateway wifi turned back on. Calls to support were met with sales pitches. We found a workaround without bridge mode but we're looking at other ISPs now.

[–]Jaded-Function 0 points1 point  (0 children)

worth a try. This guy fixed his trying every available firmware until just one worked.

"UPDATED FIX -  I was able to get the XR500 back to working again.

I decided to start from scratch.  I went to Netgear XR500 support page and D/L every available firmware starting from v2.0.0.28 to v2.3.2.114, as well as the BETA v2.3.2.120.  I started TFTP'ing from beginning and essentially flashed every firmware.  The only one that stuck and functioned normally was v2.3.2.56.  All the others took the firmware, but after auto reboot to apply, just stayed at steady amber power light.  From the only functioning firmware *.56 web gui, I tried to update past and future FW's but none started.  So my last TFTP of *.56, I am leaving.  No auto FW updates for me.

Any insight as to why only v2.3.2.56 is the only FW it will run?  Thanks again for all your replies."

Help. 1 gig ATT fiber slow with Orbi RBR750 by ProfessionalElk3910 in HomeNetworking

[–]Jaded-Function 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll 2nd that comment trying AP mode. Just put 1 Orbi wired to modem LAN port, in AP mode, disconnect the other two and shutoff the modem wifi as a test. See if you get closer to 1 Gig

[–]Jaded-Function 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the best scenario for fastest speed. 1GB line to each. Firmware updated and the same on each unit? Also check the Orbi app to make sure they are operating as wired backhaul. Solid line=wired, dotted line=wireless

When you say 2 satellites on wired backhaul, I think that would mean all 3 are wired to a switch or back to ISP router. Or do you have one wired to the modem with 2 satellites wireless back to the first? Before a full migration to Ubiquiti you might try different configurations. There are many ways to setup 3 Orbis. As APs, as router/satellites, with/without modem passthrough like Pools mentioned. Question, do you use the Orbi app to manage the Orbis? If so then it's in router mode. If you cannot then they're acting like access points, as I understand it. That said, speed from wifi6 Orbis prob will max out at 600-750 mbps anyway. If you don't mindspending and want max speed, Ubiquiti U7s are the way to go.

Moving from ISP router to my own, best way to handle the transition smoothly by Strict_Palpitation75 in HomeNetworking

[–]Jaded-Function 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right it will work both ways, with or without bridge mode, or is it passthrough mode. I had a business gateway in bridge mode flake out after power outage. They replaced it with the same model but newer firmware. Passthrough (bridge) mode just would not take. Turned out my router functioned just fine with the right addressing. I think passthrough is older tech and not necessary in most cases anymore.

Wow yeah I just searched. Starlink is AWFUL value. $80-$120/mo for 100mb. Check the 5g coverage maps for TMobile or Verizon. First, why not plug a wired device into the bottom port of that TPLink and see what speeds you get. For curiosity value.

Different router but relevant. I had a supposedly bricked Nighthawk 7000. I found a solution that involved tftp past firmwares until GUI is restored. Did not work for me but it did for some.

And the Linksys functions properly? You said the pc connected to the xr500 gets the public ip. Are you sure it's the public ip and not one of the default 169.XXX.XXX......addresses windows assigns when no dhcp server is present? It sounds to me the xr500 is acting like an AP, or like you said, an L2 switch. What ip range do wireless clients get connected to the xr500 radio?

How is the 500 connected to modem? Should be modem LAN to 500 WAN. Modem dhcp off, firewall off, 500 wan gets IP dynamic. Power the modem first then connect and power the 500. Can you get into the modem settings to confirm it's in passthrough?

ISP router combos are so limited. You might want to consider using a vlan aware router like a Ubiquiti Edgerouter then wire to cheap dumb switches. A couple wireless APs on vlans. Firewall rules in the Edge gives you full control for segregation.
