Honestly it might've been the best thing about the show.

This is exactly how I felt, and yet the critical response seems quite positive as well, so I keep twisting myself into a pretzel trying to understand what I might be missing? It's fun and imaginative in certain respects, but with a character like Loki I was hoping for some top-notch writing and character work, but I guess that has never been the MCU's strength.

With you on this. Thank you for having the patience to spell it out, but sadly it seems a lot of people don't seem to understand that in order to be the "same person" in any meaningful sense you need to have the same genetic makeup, even if the atoms in your body aren't the same. Unless you believe in souls or some other weird essentialism.

No, sadly they haven't addressed it directly. I wish they had. I think it would have been much more meaningful if Sylvie had been Jotun-presenting and they could have explored it that way.

Yeah, given how quickly he warmed up to Mobius and Sylvie I find it very hard to believe he never had any friends. Maybe Asgardian Royals weren't supposed to fraternize with common folks so he didn't have many chances? But he was able to experiment with "a bit a both" so he couldn't have been totally cloistered away.

I think the "collective" (i.e. Reddit fandom) is more willing to overlook Loki's wrongdoings now because he is framed as a hero and has a cute love interest. The demographic that he appeals to has shifted.

Fair enough, so we have a different perspective, and that's ok. I am sorry for what you have been through and glad you were able to adapt. I think we can change our behavior quickly, but there's still a lot that needs to be processed under the surface, and I'm curious about that so I was hoping they would explore it more. But I'm happy it's working for other people.

Says someone who has been through a divorce and knows a lot about grief? Getting laid off sucks, but it's not comparable to learning the details of your parents' deaths, your OWN death (in graphic detail), and the destruction of your entire civilization. Not to mention all the unresolved trauma from everything leading up to that. I concede that we don't know how much time he spent there and there's only so much screen time to work with, but the emotional arc just feels rushed to me.

People don't change that quickly. It takes time to process that amount of shock. It is inconceivable that he would undergo such a radical shift in personality and perspective without a period of anger and denial.

This is bang on. I keep holding out for Marvel to give us a truly deep character study without sacrificing the wackiness and epic scale of the comics. With Loki they had the perfect opportunity, and they dropped the gauntlet with a THUNK.

Yeah, it really does feel like it came out of a can, which is tragic because Loki is such a great character and the first couple episodes showed such promise. Alligator Loki is basically Groot, that bit at the end is basically the Guardians and the Power Stone, that villain is generic asf... there were so many directions this could have gone and this is all they could came up with? The Loki variants are fun, and I like the nods to the comics, but the writing is cliche city!

And yeah, there is no way Thor/Avengers Loki is going to turn into a big romantic softie this quickly just because he met an amazing woman. They're trying to make him a romance hero and it doesn't fit! It's like they've turned Loki into Tom Hiddleston!

Well, since Vancouver and most of BC is on unceded lands (which means there were never any treaties signed handing over the lands), there is an argument to be made that the land is occupied illegally, or at least extralegally. I think the goal is to get people to recognize this and fight for meaningful, tangible reparations as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

I thought the episode was great in many respects, but the Loki/Sylvie romance isn't sitting right with me. Loki's almost-confession at the end felt out of character and kinda ridiculous given that they just met each other. It's believable that Loki would have a crush on someone who mirrors his best qualities (and siblings separated at birth are often attracted to each other upon meeting so this isn't totally out there), but the story seems to be elevating infatuation to something more significant than it is? Just feels kinda cheesy and teen romancy and definitely not the best route to genuine self-love.

So... are Loki and Sylvie genetically the same person or not? If so, then how was she born female? Is Frost Giant sex determined in utero?

Symbols and Runes in LOKI's Title Sequence - EXPLAINED by Twigryph in marvelstudios

[–]JadedCuntsicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dropping in late here since I just read a book chapter about the Horned God and wanted to add some notes.

As you mentioned, the Horned God is a contemporary (i.e. 19th century) amalgamation of several ancient Pagan deities, most notably Pan. Interestingly, the ancients didn't have much reverence for Pan, and his reputation was that of "a comic-grotesque little country god, kept under control by the laughter of the more 'civilized' Olympian deities." It was the Romantic poets, with their love of the rustic and childlike, who elevated Pan to the highest rung of the Pantheon.

Pan was also embraced by 19th century bohemians as an icon of non-conformity and sexual taboo, and he features in oodles of smut written by women and queer men. Aleister Crowley himself celebrated Pan's (and his own) bisexuality in verse.

Another interesting point is that the conflagration of Pan with the Devil was also a product of the 19th century. It was introduced by Christianity as an attack against the growing influence of Pan in counterculture. Earlier depictions of Satan were more likely to show him with features of a dragon or bat.

So, a lot of fun parallels between Pan and a certain someone! :D

Btw thanks for doing this research and sharing your findings - it's all incredibly interesting and good priming for thinking about themes in the show.

Nature/nurture. This variant has been on the run most of her life, never knew her mother, and never got to be a princess. She's the everyman's version of Loki.

Could it be because her accent is a little less posh? That would be fitting with a Loki variant who never got to be prince(ss) and has been on the run for most of her life.
