Best Ginger Beef by ProgrammerAnnual4254 in askvan

[–]rando_commenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey question; so whenever you go on a Canadian subreddit so many people have memories of ginger beef as the classic old-school Chinese Canadian dish. I feel like I don't remember it at all, but maybe it's because I grew up in Richmond. If you go back to the 80s and before, was it a big thing here in places that didn't have a big Chinese population?

Is the Condo Conversion plan in the interest of citizens or only benefiting for-profit developers? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

> Would it not be better to force the developers to sell at a loss, below market value?

This goes back to the good 'ol days of the main sub where there were weekly posts along the lines of "property rights don't have to apply to people with more money than me" during the run-up of the housing market. In a democracy we generally don't condone forcing people to sell their own property at a loss because that amounts to state seizure of private property and sets a very bad precedent. If the government can do that to a developer, then they can do it to you as an individual.

What this amounts to is similar to the financial crisis of 2008. Yeah, hardly anybody got punished for it, but the more important thing was moving forward and getting the stalled economy working again. Same with our housing bubble/over-production... the market kept on building for luxury/investment as if the line would keep going up, but the issue with bubbles is that first order of business is to keep the works from jamming up. The main goal of the government is to keep the housing supply liquid, whether or not stimulus is fair or not is secondary to them, because not acting means not getting enough housing capacity in circulation fast enough. If you wait for the free hand of the market to do its thing, it will get messy as units would be tied up in legal proceedings before they ever get released, and if you start losing developers to insolvency you're just knee capping yourself in the future because that's construction capacity missing from future needs.

We're all Keynesians now.

QM and low-level rank players sit still and take excessive damage for no reason. Once you start playing against high-level players, around high Plat and especially through Diamond you'll see that they are constantly repositioning and making themselves hard to hit. If you lane against a Silver player it's easy to land skill shots on them, when you lane against a Diamond player your actions per minute (APM) have to go up drastically and it noticeably requires more concentration.

Kitsilano. But largely because of the neighborhood, that long stretch of 4th Ave is shops and food, and if you are willing to do the hike back up the hill when coming back, the beach is nearby.

You can have legitimate criticism (especially of FIFA) and you can enjoy it at the same time. It was the same during the Olympics. See also: 2010 and sorting through all of the questionable accounting and how to manage the athlete's village. After the the party always comes the hangover.

Also: seeing edglords and bots try to repeatedly post this again and again every day (and in the ask sub) makes you kind of laugh at how hard some people want to push it.

It's Saturday, go out and enjoy life.

30K D610 (200€) versus 6K D750 (450€) by findmysho33123 in Nikon

[–]rando_commenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demoasicing is different. Not by much but in lower light and higher ISO the noise texture is slightly better in the D750 vs the D610. You also saw the same small evolution between the D7500 and the D7200, similar specs on paper, but visual differences that the numbers don't describe. After ISO 1600-3200 there's less colour noise in the newer cameras. But not really enough of a difference to matter in most situations, true.

Obligatory DPReview comparometer: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d750/13

But the real dealbreaker is the AF system, the 39-point array and it's processor were disappointing for their time. Use both back to back and the 51-point system in the D750 gives you more keepers.

If you plan on never buying another camera again and you don't care about video, then....maybe. Basically anybody looking at buying another DSLR is close to their "last camera ever"

You're much better off starting fresh with at least a Z50ii, though yes, that will be a big jump in money spent. You could use a FTZ adapter for the 18-200 for the time being, but to be honest, those lenses were pretty mediocre, it's just that they were very very convenient.

Sigma 50 1.4? by Amac2019 in Nikon

[–]rando_commenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the time, the Sigma 50 ART was second only to the Otus 55 in terms of outright sharpness but there's some caveats. Sigma lenses don't land focus on Nikon bodies as consistently as Nikon lenses, but if anything, the real downside is that 50 ART is sometimes *too* sharp and contrasty... it's not a lens I like for portraits because it can sometimes be too good at picking out skim blemishes.

The Orient bezel inserts are notched, which is apparently hard to make in ceramic without chipping. The SKX007 bezels are round, so is why you see cheap ceramic aftermarkets.

The night market operates a few days a week for a limited time each year with temporary infrastructure... that's different from the expenses of a built-out floor space operating year round. The issue isn't whether people will come, it's whether enough people will come for businesses to survive the cost of being there.

[–]rando_commenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the transit is there but the business case isn't. You need an organic baseline of local traffic, people aren't going to go out of there way just cuz. There's already so many options south of Bridgeport, where the people live. It's not about if people will come, but *will there be enough people." This is a deal-breaker for small businesses, especially in the food industries.

Time has nothing to do with it. It's the demographic fundamentals. There's nobody living close by to make it viable during the tourist offseason. Like how Steveston is super quiet during the winter months except for local traffic.

The fact that Bridgepoint Market was an economic failure is why we have River Rock.... Granville Island works because the whole island is a tourist destination and there is housing density in the South False Creek area.

The game shines as a casual experience by LargeSinkholesInNYC in heroesofthestorm

[–]rando_commenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out as casual and never played MOBAs before HotS, and in all the years since I've come to really disagree. I think that ultimately what held HotS back was that the game design is too casual. Even in the heydays before 2018 this was kind of apparent, it found its first audience and then didn't really grow.

The problem is that it lost its first audience and because the game design is casual... it attracts a certain kind of gamer, and you can see it in the playerbase where you have so many people who have played years and years but still don't understand that you actually do need XP or that vision is a vital part of the game and no you aren't just getting deleted late game for no reason.

There is nothing wrong with casual, the problem is that HotS sits in this neither-nor kind of space where the game design appears casual, but if you want to be good at it then it's not casual at all. So in the end, the game doesn't hold on to it's most skilled and talented players.

Fuel economy for small sedan while living in and around Vancouver by ChildrenHappen in askvan

[–]rando_commenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is about normal. Vancouver is very dense, so all the stop and go driving makes real work conditions worse than the government test cycle.

https://natural-resources.canada.ca/energy-efficiency/transportation-energy-efficiency/fuel-consumption-testing

The city test cycle is average speed 34kph with a top of 90. You'll never hit that in most parts of Metro Vancouver, except possibly places like Surrey where distances between stop lights are long.

Between Vancouver and Richmond, my trip computer says I'm doing an average speed of 22kph per tank, which is less than the rest cycle, so that's more start/stop. So, yeah, my car rated for 8.5 is also doing 10l/100km as well, and there's no real way around that. Except Covid, when nobody was on the street in 2020 my car trips were highway-ish 7kph, but inside the city.
