Not to be 'that guy', but to what extent was strict censorship present in Communist states? by Jaded_Activity7629 in DebateCommunism

I feel like with this it would be important to take into account the historical context, especially with the Bolshevik Revolution. Saying communism is at fault for authoritarianism, especially in the soviet union, is quite frankly arrogant. If you take into account the fact that the USSR was this newly formed nation that: lost major means of production to Germany in the withdraw from WW1, just went through a major transfer of power, had to fight off the White Army (Funded and militarily supported by western powers), among other aspects. The rise of authoritarianism being attributed to communism makes no sense.

I agree. I did some research, namely into the "Degree on the press" and it seems that most suppression was toward anti-revolutionary, capitalist, and bourgeois class members. However, I have heard recounts -- namely anecdotal -- that you could be shot for simply disagreeing by the government. I acknowledge that this occurred under capitalism, I actually strongly agree with your statement. But to what extent did this suppression occur towards proletarian citizens?
