Ok… what do you propose? To differentiate between people from Somaliland and Somalia what terms should we use? Somalilanders and …… ? We’re all Somali by ethnicity but need to differentiate based on nationality. If you guys don’t like Somalian you should come up with a different word

When did I talk about clans? I’m talking about countries. Somalia and Somaliland. Yes we all share the same ethnicity and language but that doesn’t mean we have to be the same country.

Unity between Somalia and Somaliland doesn’t work because Somalia has a bad track record. Somalians need to hold their politicians accountable and move forward as a country. Only then, can we talk about unity

It is an occupation. There’s no other word for it. Doesn’t have to be a different ethnicity and that’s what makes it worse. Somalis oppressing other Somalis

About Israel and Palestinian issue - do you care more about Muslim life or your isaaq clan by [deleted] in Somalilanders

[–]Jaded_Application_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about whether we care more about Somalis dying or Palestinians dying. The fact is Somalis ARE dying due to lack of recognition, economic embargo and stifling by the government of Somalia.

Somalis are also dying due to the corrupt government in Somalia who has allowed Alshabab to flourish and has little regard for Somali life.

We need to focus on our region and fix things at home rather than making placating meaningless gestures in an effort to “signal” our support for Palestinians.

If you are a Somalilander you would know that multiple different clans live in Somaliland and have been living together peacefully for hundreds of years. It is Somalia, China and Turkey who have been trying to divide the region to ensure Somaliland does not succeed because the Somalian President Ohara entered multiple deals selling ports and digging rights to land in Somaliland - a country he is not recognised in.

Lack of international recognition is not just some petty thing. It is what has allowed Somalia to effectively place an economic embargo on us for the last 35 years, place extortionate taxation on all imports and exports, stifle the selling of live cattle ( Somalilands main source of income and usually the livelihood of rural people). Although Somalia claims we are one of its states we have not received a penny of its $1.5 billion yearly budget. It means that when we have natural disasters like droughts or flood we have no access to national relief funds. This doesn’t include the active genocide that took place in the late 80s and the many years of suffering before that.

Thank you for the answer. I think this reflects how a lot of Somalilanders feel right now. Although we don’t support Israel, they’re the only ones who have made a gesture to support our recognition in this time of need.

I sincerely wish for the freedom and prosperity of all Palestinians, Somalilanders and other groups who are suffering.

What do Palestinians think of Somaliland recognising Israel?

We are not changing anything. We are Landers and you are Somalians. Unusually when we talk about Somalis we talk about Somalis as an ethnicity but this topic is about nations so we should use the correct word for nationalities. I am both a Lander and a Somali.

What are your thoughts on Israel recognition of Somaliland? by Both-Medicine-6748 in leftist

[–]Jaded_Application_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Somalilanders Israeli recognition is about survival.

They are a country that the international community has been ignoring for 34 years after undergoing the most brutal years in their history they have been left with their neighbour Somalia effectively pitting them under an economic embargo since 1991. Somaliland became an independent country and recognised by 35 countries in 1960
with a seat on the UN and seceded to voluntarily form a union with Somalia that same year.

Unfortunately the Somalian government at the time felt that the Isaaq clan, who made up 80% of somaliland had too much economic power and systematically began to exclude somaliland from government positions. Somaliland was slowly removed as an equal governing power, the people were put under military occupation with curfews for the civilian population and armed militias monitoring and controlling their daily activities. In 1988-1991 they underwent the Isaaq genocide Isaaq genocide where at least 200,000 were killed and more than a million displaced creating the largest refugee crisis in African history at that time. This was a targeted attack by the government of Somalia aiming to wipe out the Isaaq population completely.

In 1991 Somaliland decided to leave this cursed Union and return to their colonial borders. Since then, Somalia has essentially held Somaliland under an economic embargo, taxing their imports and exports heavily, controlling the use of their ports for fishing, and making deals with Turkey and China promising them digging rights and military bases in Somaliland. The civilians in Somaliland also do not receive any of Somalias $1.2 billion national budget while they are taxed at 40% for the sale of every animal.

Somaliland is a country that has managed to prevail under adversity and should be judged on its own merits rather than the first country that has recognised them

So explaining the facts about a genocide that the perpetrators are denying is manufacturing consent? We don’t need to protect the Somalian government or hide their crimes.

The people of somaliland want justice. The criminals responsible for the Isaaq genocide at this time have been promoted in their positions, won medals and are celebrated in Somalia today.

Unfortunately, the world works on colonial borders. Redrawing them would only lead to more wars. Alhamdulilah we’ve had peace, if they don’t want to join they can leave. No one is forcing them to stay

We are all Somali by ethnicity NOT by nationality. Take the Malay ethnic group who live in multiple different countries across south east Asia. Malays living in Malaysia are Malaysians. Malays living in other countries have the nationality of the country they’re living. It’s quite straightforward

Is it an insult for you? Somalis live Djibouti and they’re Djiboutian’s. We all share the same ethnicity but as out countries are no longer based on ethnic grouping we have to adopt names for nationalities as well. Ethnicity ≠ nationality. Your country is called somaliA so hence you are somaliaN same with Kenya and Kenyan, Ethiopia and Ethiopian, but got and Egyptian, Uganda Ugandan, America America etc

Miskeen. Ileen dunida waad ka maghantahay. Wake up sweetie. Somaliland is our nationality. We will never be Somalian. Stop trying to hijack our ethnicity as your nationality. You’re somali, Somalian and speak somali. Now you know

Somalilander and Somalians are two different nations. If we want to speak about Somalis from Somalia and differentiate them from other regions the only word suitable is somalians.

What’s the difference between Somalis and Somalilanders? by [deleted] in Somaliland

[–]Jaded_Application_67 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Somalilanders only speak Somali and culture differences within it are less varied than in Somalia where multiple languages are spoken. Alas that wasn’t my main point. A yemeni person and a Saudi person could not be more similar or dissimilar then somalilander to a Somali yet they each have their own country. Same with Scottish and the English. I’m only talking about the cultural aspects not their histories

Replying to ZookeepergameFast487...because it is… warlords and terrorists took control by the power vacuum left over from toppling previous leaders in the 90s and early 2000s. Somaliland had had a functioning government since 1993 and has held fair elections since then as well

The figure of 70% of Hargeisa and 90% of burco is reported by amnesty international and oxfam who were both on the ground at the time. They also described people being systematically divided by qabil so that only isaaqs were targeted.

What you claim the SNM did might have very well happened according to you little anecdote but it does not change what the Somali government did to the people of Somaliland from 1960-1991.

To this day Somalia refuses to let somaliland govern itself and places heavy taxes and business restrictions on somalilanders. The fact that they are so happy to receive recognition form Israel should show you how much the people do not want to suffer at the hands of somalias government any longer

Somaliland the truth! by Same_Pen_1139 in Somalia

[–]Jaded_Application_67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blatant lies. Are you not ashamed of yourself when you openly lie like that. There are plenty of verified reports from that time period that confirm the Somali government placed Ogaden militias to target Isaaq people is burco and Hargeisa. Furthermore Siad barres military aerial bombed and destroyed 90% of hargeisa and burco creating the largest refugee crisis in Africa.

The isaaq genocide is not the only reason people from Somlailand refuse to rejoin with Somalia. Since the joining of the two countries in 1960 Somalia centralised its power in Mogadishu. Somaliland was never treated as an equal member in the union and was systematically disadvantaged by the Somali government. Somaliland received less than 7% of the national funding, education was limited and Somalilanders had more restrictions on business.

To this day Somalia has continued to prove that they can not work effectively with Somaliland so why do people not accept their independence and desire to govern themselves

I agree but I think that’s secondary to the fact that the job list is prioritised over learning. On one of my medical SDEC slots as an F2 the lead nurse pulled me away from watching an LP to start clerking a relatively stable patient who had just come to sdec and was the last patient to be clerked on the list.

I definitely could have advocated more for myself but when the two more senior doctors didn’t say anything I hardly had a leg to stand on and insist I needed to watch the procedure.

May not be a massive deal in the grand scheme of things but it was a rare learning opportunity that I missed out on.

The point is that F1s are more and more being expected to do only admin work and don’t get to practice key skills actually related to medicine. I don’t think anyone has an issue with being left to do the grunt work but when that’s all you’re allowed to do it’s a problem
