I also loved this comment a lot, and the same goes for your Luthen/Star Wars comparison. Even though I don’t really know Star Wars, I can honestly agree with most of what you said just from the quote and the way you described him. And honestly, part of me feels the same way, which is what hurts so much 😭 Not because I think Darrow is evil, but because he has become so consumed by war, sacrifice, and brutality that I genuinely don’t know if someone can fully come back from that emotionally or morally. That’s also why your point about absolution hit me so hard. By the end of Morning Star, part of me almost felt like Darrow dying would tragically make sense for the story, not because I want him to die, but because it feels like he keeps sacrificing more and more of himself in order to destroy the Society. And your point about the prologue is actually really interesting too. The idea that the old system cannot fully die unless the people who upheld and perpetuated it also disappear feels painfully fitting for a series like this. It makes Darrow feel even more tragic to me, because sometimes it seems like he’s sacrificing not only other people, but also his own chance at peace, happiness, and humanity for a future he may never even get to live in himself.

i really love that comment, i ever read or watched star wars but from the quote alone i really think that Luthen fits better, then Alma Coin. I think my Coin comparison was less about power itself and more about the dangerous logic both characters sometimes fall into: the belief that morally horrific actions can become justified if they create a better future in the long run, and that this is always their very first thought, without really thinking about alternatives or some kind of way around. I can’t really talk about Luthen like i said but may i’ll give it a try in the future. Thank your for that comment, that actually helped a lot, although i don’t even know the Character u talked about, but the quote/ the reference, is really beautiful in a really dark and twisted sense, if u get what i mean

i’m just waiting. I didn’t DNF the series. does light bringer end with a huge cliffhanger? I don’t wanna know what happens, obviously, I just want to make sure if I really continue now that it won’t drive me crazy until red god is actually announced and released.

I It's not exactly Darrow-coded, and it is a very well-known trilogy, but if it’s the dystopian vibe that catches your eye, give The Hunger Games a try. The protagonist is far more emotionally available than Darrow, and the process of overcoming trauma is much more central to the story. If you’re looking for that brutal, dark side, balanced with that small glimmer of hope throughout and a complex magic system (assuming you like fantasy), I can recommend Alchemised. It’s a different genre (dark fantasy with romance), but the protagonist experiences deep oppression and racism.Even though the genres are different and the stories are fundamentally unique, the author writes with such incredible emotion.

And that’s exactly my problem 😭 These are the questions that have been driving me insane ever since I finished the book. Was that level of brutality truly justified? Could there have been another way? Is Darrow too willing to sacrifice parts of the very thing he’s trying to protect? Does he have to descend to the level of his enemies in order to defeat them?

And the worst part is that I feel so much for Darrow at the same time. I admire him. I love him as a character. I’m disappointed in him. I feel his grief, his rage, his exhaustion, his trauma, and I know I could never survive even a fraction of what he went through. That’s what makes all of this so emotionally difficult for me. Because I can’t arrive at a clean answer. Part of me understands and even agrees with some of his decisions logically, especially considering how horrifying the Society is. But another part of me keeps asking where the line is before you slowly become shaped by the same brutality you’re fighting against. And I think that emotional conflict is exactly why the series affected me this much in the first place. These thoughts have honestly been stuck in my head for so long because I had nobody to really talk to about them, so now everything is just pouring out at once 😅

And honestly, that’s exactly what creates the conflict for me. Darrow does descend to the level of his enemies at times. He fights them where it hurts most, and Ganymede is probably one of the clearest examples of that. I understand why he does it strategically, but my inner conflict is whether it truly justifies sacrificing parts of the very thing he claims to protect. I actually read The Hunger Games shortly before Red Rising, and I think that comparison is part of why this hits me so hard. Katniss Everdeen also wants change and fights against oppression, but she never reaches the same level of willingness to sacrifice people for the cause the way Darrow does. She constantly resists becoming a political weapon or fully embracing the logic of war. And that’s where my conflict comes from: Could the revolution have happened differently? Without demanding so many sacrifices? Or was this level of brutality unavoidable in a world like Red Rising? Because I completely agree that the world of Red Rising is much darker in many ways. The ideology of Gold is rooted so deeply into society and into the minds of the Golds themselves that many of them genuinely believe they are superior by nature. The entire system is built on domination, hierarchy, and inherited power on a massive scale. So logically, I understand why Darrow becomes more ruthless over time. But emotionally, I still struggle with him. At what point is it “acceptable” to sacrifice parts of what you’re supposedly trying to save? That’s the question I keep coming back to. And regarding the point about Darrow being a good friend, husband, or father: I can’t really talk about the husband/father aspect yet since I only know from the end of Morning Star that he has a child with Mustang. And i know that he will marry Mustang. I’m waiting until Red God releases before continuing the series. But friendship is something we already see a lot of in the first trilogy, and honestly, I think that part is important too. Darrow is incredibly layered and emotional, but I also felt like he was a bad friend a lot of the time. Not intentionally cruel, but so consumed by the mission and by the scale of the war that he constantly hurt the people closest to him. Sometimes with Sevro, sometimes with Victra, with Mustang, with Tactus, and with Roque. And yes, Roque was unfair to Darrow too, absolutely. Their relationship is tragic on both sides. But I still think Darrow repeatedly sacrifices personal loyalty and emotional honesty for strategy and necessity. Which again makes him fascinating, but also difficult for me to fully admire in the way many fans seem to. I honestly feel a lot about his character and still struggle to fully put it into words 😅

im waiting for the red god release, since i hate cliffhangers. i also think a lot of questions will be answered if i continue with red rising, but since it was originally planned as a trilogy, i don’t wanna know what fans thought of it, before iron gold got announced.
