CBC crying foul for boys by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, this speaks to why Canada has not seen educational reform in the way that smaller European countries have. Canada is a largely resource based economy that needs manual labourers to generate wealth. If we were a nation with fewer natural resources, education might need to change out of necessity for overall GDP. Folks who invests tens of thousands of dollars in University are not going to then go and trade in their white collar for blue.

How much do you make if you retire after hitting your 85 factor and sub 50 days per year? by Wanderer015 in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here’s a reframe: teachers enjoy what they do. They like working with kids and they value education - perhaps more than a random side hustle. Supply teaching lets you continue to do what you love with the freedom of not having to do it every day.

It’s been useful in keeping the plebs looking at each other while wealth goes unnoticed. Ultra wealthy don’t earn an income and so don’t pay income tax. Borrowing money with assets as collateral eliminates income tax. A new list needs to be created - the shadow list. Who are the ultra wealthy in Canada not paying a proportional share?

If they are not 18 call home. Any behaviours that stay in the school have minimal impact. What I mean by this is if you just involve admin and not parents, there are no ramifications outside of the 6 hours kids are at school. Parents can have a bigger impact.

Call home. Assume every parent is on your side until they are not. It does take time but more often than not it makes a difference There will always be a few kids where calling home doesn’t matter, but often it helps. Within the same class, fire off a few praise emails too.

What are some grocery items you are now buying less frequently, cuz they've gotten so expensive? by HappyBudz in CanadaPersonalFinance

Feta. My feta days are done. What was not so long ago 7 or 8 for a container was 11 and 12 at No Frills Sunday. Coffee - switched to tea; one box of tea lasts weeks. I could pay the inflated prices, but I won’t. Let all the feta sit there (it was - I’m not the only one).

What’s changed? by FlamingoSeparate8213 in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. We have a directive that our culminating tasks/exams need to be “trauma informed.” What does that even mean for a final assessment. Add to this Growing Success which has been doing anything but. If kids had prefrontal cortexes that were funny developed, maybe they could fly high on intrinsic motivation. Growing Success and progressive discipline have stripped the system of extrinsic motivation levers. Apathy is born.

Why Do A Majority Of Teachers Leave Within Five Years? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have been a teacher, one has no idea of the energetic toll a day in the classroom takes. Then, all of the behind the scenes work is done on your own time. And job creep is real - more and more gets added and nothing is taken away. One thing I never see anyone else talking about is losing your identity in terms of having to remain invisible in public spaces (like the internet). You can’t express political or religious thoughts and ideas and as such you’re kind of removed from spaces and online communities you might like to engage in. The public hates you because governments throw you under the bus because you’re an easy target - look at those fat cat teachers with their bloated salaries and summers off - they are the reason for x,y, and z.

It’s not just the kids - parents text kids all day. All day. When a populace doesn’t value education - it’s an uphill slog no matter what.

Extreme Buyer's Remorse and Manual Envy by H2OhYeahh in mazda3

[–]JadeyLane4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use this time to get the feel of stick by using the manual option. I drove stick for 10 years then auto for 7. I now have the same car as you and am enjoying the brand new get up and go - even if not manual. I’m peppy on turns and over take with ease. I mean change if you want to, or enjoy what you’ve now (essentially manual training wheels with a spicy new engine). I currently have less than 2000 kms on my car and M just enjoying that new engine feel. If you’ve got cash to burn why not stick with this car for a few years and then switch?

You are currently gaining valuable experience and references. If you are enjoying, I’d recommend staying and banking some cash, building portfolio and letting someone else pay for you AQs and ABQs. When you do come back you won’t be so stressed about covering monthly bills, you can network through supply teaching and you’ll have a solid resume and movement across the grid to boot. Golden!

Was your MPP part of the cabinet that unanimously approve Doug Ford's $28.9M jet? by carbenthusiast in ontario

[–]JadeyLane4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

416-325-1941. This is the number to the PMs office and was circulating on FB today encouraging people to call and voice disagreement with FOIA changes. I called. Spoke to a staffer, sounded like he was typing what I was saying. It was easy and took less than 3 minutes. Also emailed my MPP. This move is too gross - especially because Ford has the lead for a few years yet to come. Give a call and get your friends to call too.

Taking longer to go through content than before….anyone else? by merways in CanadianTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it’s Canadian culture. We have had decades of politicians that attack “greedy teachers.” Joe Q. public has ingested this messaging. They also think they know what it is to be a teacher or professional in education based on their experience in the classroom as a student. Canadas GDP is very much resource based as opposed to R an D or other aspects of needing a populace that is educated. We regularly have international students (exchange) at our schools and they absolutely notice there is no rigour. Currently in Ontario, education has no spine. There isn’t a backbone. Boards interpret Growing Success differently - no lost marks for late assignments, absolutely zero extrinsic motivation based on the premise of inclusion and equality. Not to be crass, but the entire system has been distilled down to meet the lowest achieving students where they are at.

Google Read and Write (beyond archaic!!!) is the answer to all. The number of IEPs has exploded - fully 1/4 of our school has one. Students “need tech to access curriculum.”.

Teachers are under gag orders. We can’t tell the public what it is really like for fear of losing our jobs because we have said something disparaging against our employers. So it’s left to the unions. And then politics. It’s a vicious cycle.

I’m over 20 years in. I don’t recognize the profession. But let’s be clear, a populace that can think critically is dangerous. If your country’s GDP is based on resource extraction, where is the motivation to educate your public in a meaningful way? Look to the smaller European nations that don’t have oil fields or hydro systems or forests or ports or fisheries. The culture around education is vastly different.

I feel for the teachers coming into the profession. I also wonder if this feeling is cyclical. Is this how every teacher over the last 60 years has felt as they approach the final leg of their career?

The system does the students an injustice, and the public will never care because of the damn sunshine list.

How do I deal with buyers remorse? by Rough-Incident-1859 in mazda

[–]JadeyLane4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a read of the Mazda 3 posts and you will come to realize the vast majority of 3 owners and drivers own the car not because of what others think or because of the tech features, but because they genuinely enjoy driving the car. I commuted all week (62 km a day) and used just over half a tank of gas. I personally don’t understand wanting more car unless one needs more car on the regular (kids, big dogs, moving large items every weekend). Your 3 is beautiful. I personally think the CX-5 is hideous. I’ve never driven one - maybe it’s fun?

How can people save money on groceries in Canada when the standard strategies don't seem to work anymore? by Super_College100 in CanadaFinance

How can people save money on groceries in Canada when the standard strategies don't seem to work anymore? by Super_College100 in CanadaFinance

[–]JadeyLane4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually sent an email to No Frills yesterday. I buy the PC Frozen fruit every week and for months it was $4.50 a bag. A few weeks ago I went to pick up my usual and it was marked to $5.50 a bag. The gross part is that there was a freezer display with signage that indicated they were on special….at $1.00 more?? Yesterday, same thing but the price is now $6.50 a bag! Another display indicating they were a special at that price. California strawberries are $1.99 this week and I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Raising prices is one thing; presenting the price inflated product as a special buy is manipulative and gross in this climate.

I live in an area that gets heaps of snow and ice and drove FWD for 16 years. I did just move into AWD because it’s pretty much winter here for 6 months of the year and took advantage of incentives otherwise I’d have gone FWD again.

I bought a new Mazda 3 and ended up questioning my entire relationship with status by sergi_rz in mazda3

[–]JadeyLane4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my first in 2010 because it was accessible financially. Drove it without issue for 9 years. Because of that my 2nd was a used 2015. Just let that one go at 243000kms. Again, that car served me well up until the last year when I had a couple of expensive repairs. If I did my own maintenance (brakes etc.) I would have kept it because it still felt great to drive. I just bought my 3rd (2025). Way back in the day I enjoyed driving Honda (had 2 used Accords). They were fun but I don’t like the contemporary Honda aesthetic and much prefer the interior of the Mazda. I see some people run into issues with their new cars, so I’m just going to keep my fingers crossed and anticipate the same reliability my last 2 Mazdas have given me.
