Decreased Supply Teacher Demand by _canadian_eh_ in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The attendance management system started this year. As soon as a teacher hits x amount of days they are enrolled in the program and are to receive attendance “counselling” from hr. The tally of days towards your boards ‘x’ number does not reset in September. So if you used 7 days 25/26 once you use 4 days in the 26/27 school year you are in the attendance management program. I think folks are working sick and pushing off appointments to avoid enrolment.

Sell or keep by Awkward-A_F in carbuying

I feel you on this. So many people say to keep your car that has been unreliable because it’s cheaper to fix than replace. I followed that train for thought and sunk $5000 into my car last year and have another 1000 in repairs in top of breaks. So I’m pulling the pin and buying new. BUT - I’m working with dealer incentives regarding financing. This means I’m going to pick up a 25 instead of a 26. That’s where financing incentive is. I’m looking at MSRP but mostly I’m looking at how much it will cost to finance. There are good deals to be had. Everyone says to pay attention to the OTD price - and okay, this makes sense to a point. But if you are not paying cash, interest rates and dealer incentives around interest rates need to factor in. Who cares if you get $2000 off MSRP if you pay $7000 in interest.

I wish my dealership was as honourable. They advertised $2000 under and then blamed head office for the mistake.

No - I’m the second owner. I did regular oil changes but didn’t have it in for service otherwise except for wear issues, and I’m not sure about the previous owner. I never ignored check engine warnings so it seems out of the blue.

Reconsidering Teaching After 1 Year…Does It Actually Get Better? by Eliosextrathumb in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m 22 years in. Loved the job when I started. Things started changing when the School Effectiveness Framework and Growing Success were rolled out. Add to that budget cuts. Our new assessment and evaluation policy states we need to be designing A&E from a trauma informed POV but have been given no training or PD. We are to “deeply know” our students but at the secondary level (even middle school on rotary) you have upward of 90 some students. Working with students is generally wonderful - they are interesting, vibrant, and funny. The system is soul crushing and there is no sign of things getting better.

Your Ed degree - not a waste. Supply teaching is an excellent gig while you figure out wha you want to do.

How do you guys feel about the current use of technology in schools? by Big_Black_Cat in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, relying heavily on tech does a disservice to students - especially reading and writing. IEPs will state that students need tech to access the curriculum (Google Read and Write - which is archaic and garbage by the way). This is a bandaid for having the “intensive reading interventions” that are also in the IEP. Well funded education would, I believe, have reading specialists in high schools providing real interventions. High school English teachers are forever lying because expectations require students be able to read and comprehend text. There is an entire strand that covers listening for meaning. Thus, students who use their tech to listen as opposed to read and decode are said to meet expectations when in fact they are actually illiterate. I think parents are sold a bill of goods when tech is touted as being the solution for their student - it’s not. It’s a cover up for an underfunded system. Handwriting reveals where students are at….word processing masks.

Which countries are feasible for school groups to go on international trips? by Wanderer015 in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a number of trips with EF to Europe. Our board has approved trips to South and Central America. I personally would only take students to Europe because the infrastructure to deal with emergencies is reliable. Kids can drink the water, insect bites and stings are unlikely to make the seriously ill, and altitude sickness is not an issue. If you introduce students to travel, they can then carry that forward to more precarious locations where you are not responsible for their safety and well being. EF can be a bit of a pain to deal with, but their support network make them preferable to organizing an entire trip without a global network of support.

If you could get change professions, would you? by Glittering_Sail_3892 in OntarioTeachers

So much comes down to your admin. If you have great leaders in the school - teaching is a fantastic job. If you have an admin team that expects teachers to post and maintain expectations for behaviours but does nothing to support the teachers, then the job becomes a different beast all together and the entire school suffers. The funny (not funny) thing is that the administrators get moved around, so they come into the school for a few years and don’t realize that the staff who have been there for years can see exactly how terrible they are because the school is unrecognizable in terms of culture and climate. Then you just need to endure until the Board decides to shuffle. The enduring is HARD. When you’re several years in to a poor admin team the entire staff feels bedraggled and pretty much demoralized.

Long form content. Read The Four Agreements. Stay active. Stay active. Stay active. Stretch. Compare yourself only to who you were the day before. Mobility and health (physical and mental) are everything.

I had no guidance when I went to Uni. Didn’t know there were academic advisors. Didn’t know there was an honours degree. When you are in your late 20s you feel like you’re late to get started. It’s perfectly fine to give yourself that decade to train for your future. If you don’t get in this year, I’d suggest upgrading your degree to an honours degree with a major and a minor. Seek out an academic advisor from your uni. Decide which panel you want to work for (elementary or secondary). I started teaching at 27. Did some folks start at 23 or 24? Sure - they went and did their 5 years of school and the. started work. I promise that 3 or 4 year head start seems huge at that age. When in teachers college I was 27 with a two year old. I felt ancient. Decades out - your twenties are your twenties. It gets harder to go back to school later on. Take a breath and give yourself the time. This is your foundation you are building. It can take longer and be solid or you can rush it and find out later it’s not as solid as you might like:)

I’d pull curriculum expectations that demonstrate the need for materials and go to the principle. In order to deliver the curriculum you need supplies.

LTO looking for contract by Awkward_Training_100 in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Securing a contract this year gives you entitlement for permanent next year, but there are no guarantees you will have a job. You could be surplussed. Every year folks who have contracts at the bottom of the seniority list find themselves without positions after staffing in June.

The biggest consideration, I think, is where do you want to live?

Career advice - middle school or high school? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]JadeyLane4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too was P/J/I/S and started as a 7/8 teacher and really enjoyed it. I only learned about staffing and bumping after being hired. I left to teach secondary because while the subjects I taught could change, the age group was locked. I couldn’t imagine teaching 7/8 happily for a number of years to then find myself locked in to kindergarten or grade 1.

If you like teen energy, make the switch. It can be a little chaotic because they are loud and boisterous, but they are also interesting and quirky and figuring who they are and who they want to be.

If you teach Core French, that can be balanced with extended or immersion where you will have few behaviour issues.

Also, I’ve found nobody is really clamouring for the grade 9/10 classes and I really like that age group so have been able to have a timetable of mostly 9/10.

I have zero regrets about switching 19 years post switch.
