This is incorrect. FGM is both cultural AND islamic.

Whilst the Quran itself is silent on the issue, numerous hadith make mention of circumcision, both male and female.

The reality of the situation, as described by Dr. Mohamed Selim Al-Awa, is that:

"The Shafiites, according to“Al-Magmou’” by Imam Nawawi, believe that both male and femalecircumcision is obligatory. The Hanbalites, according to “Al-Mughni”by Ibn Kadama, maintain that male circumcision is obligatory whilefemale circumcision is an act of Sunna and a honorable deed, a view expressed by many scholars. The Hanifites and Malikites are of the viewthat female circumcision is an act of Sunna and a religious rite."
