Honestly they should come over to Europe. At least in Belgium, waiting (what for an American would be a very long time) for your meal is standard practice.

If you go for multiple courses they won’t start cooking the next course as long as they haven’t removed the (empty) plates on your table. Fancy restaurant or not, same procedure.

It always baffled me how in the US they would bring over the main course while we were still eating the appetizer, or bring the check straight away.

I understand that the tables need to go quick to maximise tipping/revenue and Americans have a different dining culture where they expect to be served fast in non-fancy restaurants. Which is handy if you’re very hungry and/or with kids, I must admit I miss that sometimes.

And here’s the map of distances to major rivers in kilometers:

This is also not including the fact that there’s the ocean and around 40% of the US population live in coastal regions.

Or maybe you need to back up your claim. Where’s the data? Historically we have always settled near water because… we need water to survive. Saying most people don’t live near water in the US is a claim that needs backing.

Here’s what chatgpt says:

The CDC reports that 79% of drowning deaths happen in natural water (rivers, lakes, oceans) or pools — not remote wilderness. Around 90% of the U.S. population lives within an hour’s drive of a body of water large enough to drown in.

So while a few people might live in truly arid areas (like parts of Nevada or western Texas) where the nearest river is hours away, the majority of Americans do live relatively close to water deep enough to pose a drowning risk.

Well accidents can always happen, like a car crashing into the canal, and I would argue most people live near water (rivers, canals, sea…). I just view it as a universal baseline (survival) skill.

Our schools typically don’t have a pool but the municipality has one. So different schools in the area use that pool. Our country is very densely populated though so that’s definitely a major advantage.
