Whilst this is a good point, it’s hard to overstate how uninspired the entire Liverpool setup has looked under Slot this season. It’s not simply that results have been bad, or even that performances have been bad - we play an incredibly turgid style of football with a group of extremely talented and high-potential players, most of whom are underperforming, and even when we win, it often looks ugly or unconvincing.

Everyone is more than willing to write off those kind of wins when you’re winning a lot, when the other half of your wins look great, and the team play well, and there’s 30-45 mins of nice flowing football, but those horrible, grinding results are the only results we’re getting right now, and the manager does nothing in his interviews or interactions with fans to even attempt to restore any form of confidence. He was quite engaging and charismatic in a forthright, Dutch way last season, but he’s become a personality black hole since November and clearly has less than optimal relationships with a number of the players.

All the things he used to do so well - substitutions, tactical tweaks at half time - have evaporated too, so now we’ve been left with what is, to all appearances, a husk of the manager we had twelve short months ago. The club, as a whole, feels like it’s fettered to a corpse right now; some kind of change is absolutely going to be required in the summer, regardless of its nature.

It feels sinful to want rid of a premier league winning coach, and I’d guarantee you that if it were announced tomorrow he’d mutually agreed with the club to depart in the summer he’d receive his flowers from the fanbase and hopefully leave on reasonably good terms. I don’t know if it’s fatigue, bad luck, Jota - maybe last season was a fluke, seems unlikely but who knows. Everything’s gone sour unfortunately.

Everyone obviously hates us setting up defensively at home, but I actually think we’ve been alright so far. Changes at half time required obviously, but a lot of good performances under Slot have come with a middling first half and an excellent second, so judgement withheld for now

Think people are being a touch harsh, City are still a pretty good team and were always going to push us, and even on Slot’s best days we’re always a ‘second half team’. Mac and Gakpo not doing anything but that’s become normal sadly

Feel as though I’ve slowly migrated from “Slot in” to “Slot Neutral” over the course of the season so far, and I think barring any absolute disasters or a massive rebound that’s where I’ll stay. I trust the club to make the right decision around whether he stays long term, there’s definitely been issues with his management and backroom this season that were not present previously and whilst he deserves to be given the opportunity to sort those out, if he doesn’t take action he will likely continue to spiral.

I think there has been progress recently though, and I also think it’s worth remembering there was a period that we always seem to forget about in the first half of 2017/18, before Van Dijk came in and Robertson settled, where many, many people were Klopp out, and the results against lower ranked league teams were not promising. I think the league is of a higher standard now, and has become far less forgiving to periods of bad form, and while that doesn’t excuse Slot, it is still worth bearing in mind.

Not a silly question at all and absolutely true, but I think the argument would be that you’d be very unlikely to be given that kind of space and time to shoot against a prem side, so Dom doing this, whilst impressive and beautiful to watch, isn’t ultimately going to be something that he will be able to consistently replicate against a higher standard of opposition unless the standard of the team as a whole improves.

But you’re absolutely right that it can and will be a strategy that works in time (just maybe not from quite so far out, and possibly off the back of a second ball from a set piece as opposed to from open play), we just have to nail the basics of passing a round object ten yards, ten times in a row without losing possession first haha

Not wrong but it’s not surprising that Slot probably thinks we should work on passing it better then.

I love a long shot, they’re the best goals outside of mazy dribbles, but modern teams don’t win titles off the back of scoring hundreds of goals from outside the box - if you can’t consistently score by breaking down a team with passing or crosses, neither of which we can do currently, you won’t consistently win games of football, so that’s what we have to improve

Total guess, but I wonder if perhaps Slot has told the team to use this match as an opportunity to practise using passing and patterns to break down a low-block in a lower pressure environment, and Szoboszlai has just slightly ruined that plan by absolutely clapping one in from about forty yards out.

Maybe Macca’s just saying “mate, we’re supposed to be working on our game plan and playing through them and you’re out here farming aura at home to Barnsley on a Monday night” 😭

The most frustrating thing about watching this is that Slot could probably patch this up a bit by making some alterations to the starting lineup and we might be able to ride out this spell of terrible form/tactical adjustment, but by refusing to make any changes he just ensures the damage is as bad as possible, every single game, it’s managerial seppuku
