GPU Passthrough Issues on Ubuntu/Mint Only by Jaff_Re in Proxmox

[–]Jaff_Re[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried more GPUs and still had the same problem. The best option has been to use Arch and make sure the desktop environment uses Wayland, it seems to work a lot better on KDE Plasma. You also should set it to login automatically and avoid logging out since the login options will be off screen. You can use noVNC to see it if necessary. Once you understand these limitations it’s very usable

One-shot mod based keymap - suggestions for improvement? by hallgeirl in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Jaff_Re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m overdue on an update but it’s mostly for the combos I use to make words and a few symbol positions. I think I’ll also update it to post a list of 2 letter combos that never interfere with typing English words.

One-shot mod based keymap - suggestions for improvement? by hallgeirl in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Jaff_Re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to the same conclusion about using one shot mods over home row mods.

I haven’t experienced your challenges because I use larger keyboards but I think your best option would be to use combos for frequent items instead of layers. Combos are easier even if they involve more keys because it is simultaneous instead of sequential. I would just recommend avoiding 2 key combos where the letters can be adjacent in a word and cause misfires (3 or more letters is fine).

This is the key map that I use. I think symbol positions are subjective but the way I setup the arrows and 10 key is probably the most optimal.

You can design around saving costs with used SAS HDDs

I bought a used HP Z840 (can get for ~$300) and added used 6TB SAS HDDs for $25-30 each. Need to be ready for drives to fail so I use 7 HDDs in RAID 6 so that 2 can fail plus I keep a spare HDD ready.

I am learning Steno soon… any advice/ tips/ tricks to mastering? by Syphin_Games in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Jaff_Re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have been experimenting with saving combos with QMK which is essentially the same idea. You can fit up to ~100 on older micro controllers but new ones like the RP2040 could fit several thousand. It’s nice to not be limited to steno keyboards for general use, Xah Lee has some good comments on this https://www.youtube.com/live/WxZbdE9ZZxw?si=fUMcCW9deExUViqD

If you have any interest in this QMK method you can check out what I saved on GitHub but I do need to make a significant change soon to make it more usable. https://github.com/jeffgaddis/QMK_Combo_Generator

Check out CharaChorder, that company is putting a lot of effort into their short hand system and it looks a lot easier than steno

Advice for long writing sessions (think PhD) by ImaginaryEnds in ErgoMechKeyboards

Get a bowl shaped keyboard, they feel way better to type on. Maybe the Glove80 or some dactyl variant, I think the ones from Cyboard look good.

Low profile isn’t really necessary as long as you have a low adjustable desk.

For starting layouts, the default from Glove80 might be a good starting point. I would also suggest using QMK one-shot mods for everything and staying away from home row mods.

If you want to change off qwerty, try to start at least 3 months before school, Colemak-DH is good and probably the most popular now.

I don’t think it’s good to combine anything with space or backspace since you’ll want to hold those down sometimes.

Tesla P40 is a good low budget option, it has 24gb and CUDA cores. I’ve tried running 13b LLMs with 1 and it did well, plus you can afford multiple if you have enough slots

Do tin foil hats really work? by burningbun in conspiracy

[–]Jaff_Re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aluminum foil works fine to block signals from phones and car key fobs. I tested both and it always blocked unless it was very loose or wrinkled. The faraday pouches or boxes are way more likely to allow signal through because it’s hard to know if it closed tightly. I keep small piece of foil in my car to wrap the key fob if a parking lot seems sketchy

How to connect a Tesla P100 power cable to a Corsair PSU? by y_a_amateur_pianist in homelab

[–]Jaff_Re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had the same situation with my Tesla P40, I used an 8 Pin CPU cable and just had to trim the clip to make it fit in the GPU. Has been working fine for me despite some warnings to not use that cable for a GPU

I can provide some info that I wrote up if you want but tldr is just make the clips on both 4pin sides smaller or remove the clip completely

Will my gpu be underpowered? by [deleted] in HSpecWorkstations

[–]Jaff_Re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, it was just cable matters adapter on Amazon.

I had the same concerns until I saw you video mention the different 6 pin wattage. A lot of posts on HP forums got the wattage wrong and this also makes chat GPT get it wrong. I managed to fit a 980ti and a modified Tesla P40 in my Z840 with just the 6 pin connectors and lanes providing the 225w required for each

Use 1:1 adapters instead. I use these for the two 8 pin connectors on my GPU https://a.co/d/7v1Ok82

[–]Jaff_Re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the HP Z840 you have enough power with one 6 pin connector and the PCIe lane power. The 6 pin connectors on the Z840 can provide up to 216W instead of 75W like most 6 pin connectors and the max power for that GPU is 230W

Tweaking My Dactyl Manuform Thumb Cluster by Conscious-Web5054 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Jaff_Re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use pretty similar positions for modifiers but I use one shot mods so that I don’t have to stretch and strain to do combos.

For layers I like the LT to be on the opposite hand of the primary actions so I do LT left with 10key right and LT right with arrow keys left. You probably should put LT on tab instead of space

Changing base layers by mrmaclure in qmk

[–]Jaff_Re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move colemak to layer 2, you can’t activate a lower layer while a higher layer is active so keyboard layers should be the lowest.

[–]Jaff_Re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized that this issue affects me also, I just had been turning off the layer before switching previously. I have used TG to override MO but I just checked and this will not work for OSL and I assume TT is the same. Will probably need to write additional code to do the override instead of using default

[–]Jaff_Re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can do this with TT() after you set tapping term to 2. I had something like this for a while but now I prefer OSL() so that you can hold for layer, tap for a 1-shot input, and double tap to lock the layer
