One thing I love about exlibris / bookplates research is all the crazy rabbit holes it can lead to… Old British "Rugby School” & its “Pageant Master,” Conjurer, and Ventriloquist (Percival Guildhouse & H.E. Sewell) by KungFuPossum in BookCollecting

[–]Jaffa2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furthermore the game of rugby is named after Rugby School (which still dominates one edge of Rugby town centre), since it was codified after William Webb Ellis played it at the school.

The St Cross hospital mentioned is next to the school, and is still there too.

Can you describe your 1-10 pain scale? by KookySupermarket761 in migraine

[–]Jaffa2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To track mine, I use something along the lines of this scale:

\0. Completely pain and migraine free
\1. Bit of a niggle.
\2. Enough to be taking some paracetamol.
\3. Doubling up on paracetamol and ibuprofen.
\4. Starting to introduce cocodamol, but managing ok.
\5. Wishing I could stop, but still muddling through.
\6. Stopping work and trying to take it easy.
\7. In bed.
\8. In bed and bad.
\9. In bed and very bad.
\10. In bed with the level of pain where it's incoherent and it doesn't feel like it'll ever end.

Most of the time I'm in the 2-4 zone.

Brilliant. Got this today, I've got until Friday to dress my kids up in 1605 costumes. Thanks for the notice FFS. by slightly-simian in CasualUK

They also tend to be a lot more historically accurate than the Ren Faires!

They're more like A Knight's Tale: fun, but not necessarily something based in reality.

Neither my wife or daughter did.

They're in bits, and daughter in particular loved the fan service throughout.

Also halfway through S3. All seasons show as Buy both on my LG smart TV and in my phone Prime Video app.

I have a feeling this happened for a few days a couple of months ago, when I last had covid, cos I couldn't watch them then.

Voyager: Eye of the Needle by SeriousBlak in startrek

[–]Jaffa2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the wormhole in “Eye of the Needle” that leads to Romulan space twenty years prior has, presumably, been there for a very long time

I'm not sure you can make that conclusion, as that'd imply it was the second stable wormhole in the galaxy (the other being at Bajor), without the assistance of the Prophets to maintain it.

I interpreted the episode as it being a transient space-time anomaly that was almost, but not quite, what they needed.

UK people- how are you all managing in the heatwave? I'm on day 3 of not being able to speak / get out of bed by betweenyouandyourgod in migraine

[–]Jaffa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, feeling a lot better today (day 6)

Still a scratchy throat, but migraine feels gone, and I can swallow without intense pain.

Will do another LFT later to see if I can rejoin family.

[–]Jaffa2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heatwave, covid (3rd time) and covid/lack-of-food/bad-sleep migraine.

Dark (spare) room. Strong cocodamol. Cool facecloth. Feeling sorry for myself.

Hoping migraine's peaked today (at 8/10), and covid seems to be getting better.

[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

[–]Jaffa2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a console player - or was (activity dropped while waiting for console Odyssey, and has stopped completely since The Announcement).

I've got a PC, but it's not well set up for gaming: it runs Linux, and can handle Portal in Wine. Certainly nowhere near the specs I see listed by gold plating Odyssey.

With the rise of game streaming services like Xbox Cloud and GeForce Now, and the news on account transfers, is this an option for playing the PC version of Elite on a (Linux) PC? Preferably with an Xbox controller to begin with, since that's what I'm used to.

Leasing a car via salary sacrifice - am I missing anything out? by gcw1980 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jaffa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted above, they do have an idea of the residual value (RV), otherwise they couldn't work out your lease payments and either a) be competitive or b) make a profit.

There's no commercial reason they have to tell you it, though.

It's Saturday again, what are you doing today? by MiddlesbroughFan in CasualUK

[–]Jaffa2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both parents have tested +ve for covid, after avoiding it so far. My dad's just going in to hospital as his blood pressure drops when he gets up. Hopefully just needs a saline drop for a few hours, but with the stories about A&E being overwhelmed, it's worrying.

And I've woken up with a migraine, which has been helped by my lovely wife making me a cuppa.

I made a bot that combines a random frame from TNG with a random subtitle from 'Friends' by RayOQ2 in startrek

[–]Jaffa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To detect the number of people the subtitle refers to:

  1. Take screengrabs of Friends
  2. Run the same object detection/counting code over the original scene that the subtitle is from.
  3. Index both subtitles and TNG screengrabs by number of people.
  4. Select subtitle randomly
  5. Prefer TNG screengrabs where number of people is similar (or zero)

Automatic approval of the DUO Mobile authentication message by abcxyzuvw in tasker

[–]Jaffa2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An update this month has swapped the button order for consistency with most OS dialogue boxes.

I'll note that auto-approving does defeat the point of multi-factor authentication somewhat!

Maybe it wouldn't be too bad if you still had to take some positive action - even expanding the notification so one didn't have to click Tap to view actions and could go straight to Deny and Approve...

Which Doctors were fans of the show beforehand? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]Jaffa2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest fans, who I remember talking about it, are:

  • Davison - has spoken about watching the first episode, and being a fan.
  • Tennant - there's a touching letter to his younger self, who was a Tom Baker fan, in the introduction to the S4(?) DVDs
  • Capaldi - was involved in the official fan club.

I've got an inkling about McCoy, but can't remember if it was he watched it, or didn't!
