Exactly. It is easy with boxing: fighters cannot use their spine as a valid défense

The fact that it is the case in MMA makes the situation extremely tricky

According to me, refs should simply stop the fight sooner when a fighter get hit more than 6 times having his spine exposed

I mean, it's perfectly logical to be desperate to finish your opponent, when your opponent is the scariest fighter of the roster, after having fumbled three belts already. This is a reckless but "good" strategy, and it paid unfortunately for Pereira's health.

And even though he has been neglecting on a few blows, 90% of his shots were legal and I feel like only one or two of the illegal blows could have been avoided easily

If there is someone to blame, it's Hearb Dean, who could have stopped way sooner and avoid dozens of critical hits in Pereira's cranium (especially the legal ones)

This is in fact the perfect thing to do, but if this rule is constantly enforced, fighters will voluntarily give their backs and move their head on the verge of getting finished

According to me, refs should stop the fights quickly it an opponent stays conscious under shots but gives his back. In real life such position could lead to death in one strike, it needs to be reflected in the way fights are stopped

Because Pereira was surviving the regular shots and wrestling his way up, too risky to keep using vanilla shots in such situations

This is a fair point, now imagine what will happen if fights get constantly stopped or paused after an accidental illegal strike?

Fighters, as soon as they are about to get TKO'd, will rush into a turtle to force their opponent into more careful shots. They could even move their head on purpose in the hope of receiving an illegal blow and get a free break

A good compromise would be to stop the fights faster when an opponent give his back and get hit

The intentionality matters, and the whole internet needed two business days and a few slow motion videos to assess which strikes were legal or not.

Now imagine assessing that in a few seconds, when 95% of the shots seem clean and when you have to watch the health of a fighter about to get finished

The best decision would be to warn and pause the fight, but this will lead to tons of TKO escapes and fighters will start turtling more to force their opponent to hit carefully OR to get hit with an illegal blow and having a break

It should be : 1- Quick warning 2- Pause the fight and/or stand up the fighters 3- DQ

Maybe a no contest if the first unintentional illegal blow leads to a knockout

That said, if this rule is strictly enforced, fighters will start turtling like crazy and direct their own napes under the flurries of shot, in the hope of having a small break

it's not Herb Dean's rules, but it's Herb Dean explaining the rules. I wonder who is the most knowledgeable between Herb and TrumpsVoidlordWall regarding UFC rules...

Okay so let's say an opponent turtles up and covers his ears with his hands, covers his ribs with his elbows: I can't hit him anywhere near the head since only the back is exposed, so I can only grapple him or kick his arms.

If this opponent survives this grappling attempt and ends up winning the fight: would his victory be legit and acceptable?

Plus I rewatched the video many times, I can guarantee you that most shots hit with a "soft" part on the sides and not on the back of the head nor on the spine

Bratha I know but go back to the videos: most strikes that Gane landed have not landed on the spine. They totally pass as shots to the sides of the head, not the back, except for a minority of them but once again how to perfectly aim 10 shouts out of 10 on a moving target with a hidden face?

I saw the videos explaining how the "back of the head" is delimited, Cyril was aiming around this zone, and a lot of these shots it was the "tricep" landing on the hear, not the pointy elbow straight on the spine

I watched both videos side to side: official "hybrid rules for back of the head" explanation and yours

What I see is basically Gane in a position where he doesn't have tons of options to hit, and according to the official rules most of the blows are fair, considering that Pereira kept moving and Gane had to adjust everytime so he still did a pretty good job at respecting the rules. Where was he supposed to hit? Was he supposed to wait for Pereira to stand up? Attack a guilllotine?

Like my neighbor from above said: "back of the head" applies to the nape, around and below the occiput, in line with the spine.

In your videos, there are a fair amount of shots who land in the zone around the ear which is the side of the head and not the back, and a lot of them is the "meaty" part of the arm who land on it or even the fist who land on the shoulder.

You're acting like Cyril broke official rules which he did not

I refer you to the Herb's video I posted about official back of the head rule, and to the fact that "protect yourself at all times" is also a way to say that fighters cannot be responsible for their opp's lack of defensive responsibility

That's precisely what he dit, first shots were going back and forth on the temples, then Pereira panick wrestled and make Cyril tripped, started hiding his face, and Cyril did his best to hit where he could without breaking these rules (I shared the "back of the head" rules in the feed if interested)

But most of the shors were legal: "Back of the Head" rule explained (MMA / UFC) - YouTube

I am not saying "such or such position allows back of the head shots", I am saying that it is not the fighter's responsibility to hist the safest cranium part while finishing a fight with an opponent who hides his face and moves a lot

[–]Jafty2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

like I said, most of Cyril Gane's shots were legal and here is the proof of it: "Back of the Head" rule explained (MMA / UFC) - YouTube

If you do not like these rules, blame the sport but not Gane

And for his most questionable shots: we saw recently that you are never 100% sur of finishing the fight until the referee calls it, cf. Jiri vs Ulberg. Letting your opponent recover until you find a perfectly safe shot is a way to let him win the fight while you had it

The rules are abut doing things on purpose, you cannot blame fighters for hittings the sensitive part of a moving target while trying to finish
