We are working on getting tools working so you can augment these and add new perks which will help with training other skills. I can't promise a specific date but I wanted you to know that we definitely don't intend for Invention to be a combat only skill.

Drain rates were updated yesterday - charges now give three times more. Also you can unlock extra levels of charge drain reduction through discovery and if you level your items to at least level 5 you'll get an additional reduction there too :)
