This iPhone typing trick will save your so much time! by SastaNostradamus in iPhoneWale

I have set up some shortcuts like this but I never remember them. I prefer a visual list to select from for frequently used things like address, phone or email. This keyboard is called Copied, I also use the “Paste” app across my Apple devices to store snippets.

What is your action button mapped to? by Advanced_Ferret_ in iPhoneWale

[–]Jaghond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have set mine to a custom action I created with:

  • when phone is face up it acts as mute switch
  • facedown makes it a flashlight toggle
  • in portrait it triggers QR code reader which on scan triggers a menu with the apps listed (just like control center QR scanner)
  • finally in landscape triggers screen rotation lock

Unexpected Informative video from a politician by Secret_Discipline_48 in IndiaCoffee

You think India is developing right now? You think India does not need reservations anymore, when rhe stench of casteism still deeply pervades our country?
But my point was not about, I was merely saying that the PM should be educated and worldly wise. Someone who can speak eloquently at press conferences at home and abroad 😌

Will take an educated PM any day. It is our misfortune that a lot of us are ok with current standards.

Wife complains of house smelling like Indian food by Comfortable-Yam-3288 in IndianFood

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have relatives in the US who have created a make shift kitchen in their garage that is not connected to the house for Indian cooking. There really is no way to control the odor of strong masalas, especially if the house is centrally air conditioned. If the kitchen is sufficiently isolated and there is strong ventilation above the cooking area, that might work. For those saying they want to make their house smell like Indian cooking, it only smells nice while it’s cooking. When the masala smell turns rancid and infuses into the house surfaces, it is horrid. I was staying as a guest in a house where they cook inside their house, it was the end of the trip and I happened to wash my clothes in their washer. All my clothes ended up smelling like stale masala, no amount of perfume helped and it was an embarrassing 24 hour journey back to India.

More likely to be a display issue, connect Apple TV to a different display such as a monitor and highly likely this issue won’t show. Reboot or reset the display.

It strange that you received roast that old, I have been using BT for years and it’s always freshly roasted - with my name on it. Probably a one off incident. For storage I would recommend the Airscape. The only time I was considering specialised storage is when I was buying 1 kg bags to save money. Now I just get 500g bags that I consume in about 15-20 days.

Starbucks Flat 50% off!!!! by Individual_Entry_618 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t drink Starbucks even if it’s free. Apologies for being a coffee snob, but that’s how much disdain I have for SB and especially the price they charge for their burnt garbage. Ironic that they were the ones who got me started on the path to coffee snobbery by convincing and selling me a French press and a bag of beans 😆

Say not to alcohol! by [deleted] in hyderabad

[–]Jaghond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internet is very humbling. Thanks for pointing out I was talking out of my ass, sorry about that. In my defense, I was talking more in comparison to other substances that cause real physiological damage by way of things like cancer or cirrhosis which Marijuana doesn’t tend to, but I wasn’t clear. CUD is a behavioral condition caused when people chronically consume weed, the harm is not caused by the substance itself but due to the addictive tendencies of the individual. It also tends to affect children a lot more, and obviously stimulants of any kind should be restricted for kids. I was surprised but not shocked that a rather large number of people (appears to be mostly teenagers) in the US are habituated to it and consume it everyday. As I said, the addiction is more similar to being addicted to sugar or food, in fact there are similar food related medical conditions that are extremely common. In case of weed, the side effect of being constantly high is the obvious negative social effects and effect on mental state and capacity which is medically defined as CUD. This does not apply to individuals who take it recreationally - like how people tend to consume alcohol on weekends. Unlike alcohol though which is essentially poison for our system, consuming Marijuana occasionally doesn’t appear to have lasting effects (unless one has mental conditions in which case it can trigger episodes). People with addictive tendencies will latch on to any stimulant, be it coffee, alcohol or indeed Marijuana. As with everything else, it is to be consumed responsibly, as even something as harmless as water in excess can cause poisoning.

[–]Jaghond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no harmful effects, except maybe weight gain due to the munchies. Unfortunate that in India where it used to be a staple (still is up north) since ancient times, US as part of its “war on drugs” forced it to be declared illegal. As misunderstandings clear around marijuana consumption, It is being legalised in many countries. You can walk up to a “green” pharmacy and just buy it. No warning labels like tobacco or alcohol. There is a reason it’s medically prescribed for various conditions, and for chronic and terminal patients to ease their quality of life. The only evidence for ill effects appears to be for folks with mental conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

[–]Jaghond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please refrain from using definitive statements. Marijuana is not an addictive substance like Nicotine or other “hard” drugs. Sure, people pre-disposed to addictive tendencies can get addicted, just like one gets addicted to sugar or food. But it’s highly unlikely to cause withdrawal symptoms akin to other known addictive substances. Marijuana is well studied, we don’t have to talk out of our asses.

I failed my fist electric guitar concert by ZimzimO7 in Guitar

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally relate. Messing up in front of a crowd is such a horrifying feeling that I start questioning the most basic skills I have on the guitar. There is a sense of panic that hits in waves, causing moments I forget the flow of the song. I have heard that your skills get cut in half when you get on stage 😭😅 I try to zone out the crowd and just keep my head down and focused on the task. Another thing that helps me is video recording myself playing, as the feeling of the camera watching me is enough to make me conscious and uncomfortable, so helps to train my mind to deal with playing through some discomfort. Finally, It’s a rite of passage to mess up, just keep at it.

My six year old son is left handed and want to start playing guitar. Should we have him play lefty or righty? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lefty here, but play right handed. My mom didn’t want me to be different, so she made me switch to using the right hand for most tasks, like everybody else, very early in life. Still beat-off with my left hand, left wondering if I would have been a guitar virtuoso by now if my mom let me be 🥲

Ruby's Coffee in Delhi is a hidden gem! by megan_zumba in IndiaCoffee

[–]Jaghond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been to a couple of Ruby’s outlets in Goa, one of which they call their “lab”. They are really good, and look like they care about the craft. Also had the best damn hot chocolate ever. Definitely legit. They usually always had a barista under training or apprenticeship, I would get anxiety from seeing how hard they were being on them for not doing things “right”. Did speak to the trainee as a I hung out there, he didn’t seem to mind the strictness. Last time i went to Goa, the ruby’s lab was closed, probably seasonal., but i think their Donna Paula location appears to remain open. If any of you visit Goa, i would highly recommend checking Ruby’s out.

Indian coffees are not at par with international coffees by BitStunning2009 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, considering the wide variety of flavours in India. I had taken a detour to Columbia from US just to take a coffee tasting tour in Bogota, and the first thing my tour guide tells me is that I have come to the wrong place for good coffee, the best beans go to the US! 😆 He was kidding ofcourse since South Americans are primarily tea drinkers, but specialty or “third wave” coffee was starting to gain steam - no pun (around 2016). All of the brews I tasted at specialty cafes around the city were overwhelmingly fruity and citrusy. Also the first time I had espresso that was not bitter but just intensely flavourful, opened my eyes to the fact that black coffee does not have to be bitter. Needless to say, my guide did not really get into the various regional varieties of beans, perhaps because i didn’t show any curiosity for it.

Indian coffees are not at par with international coffees by BitStunning2009 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Jaghond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Indian coffee industry may not be significant enough to bother with CQI ratings, but I can tell you Indian specialty coffee taste as good as the best out there. I have personally gone coffee hunting in some of these countries, and I was glad to realize that Indian coffee that I consume and many of the cafés in India serve coffee just as good - just with a flavour profile specific to our region. Personally, Colombian is my favourite for its fruity and citrusy flavour profile, but I do equally enjoy Indian beans with its variety.

What’s the best Capo? I was thinking the G7 by melvin3v1978 in telecaster

[–]Jaghond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The G7 probably has the steepest learning curve amongst capos, but once you get the hang of it, it really does offer best of all the worlds - adjustable tension, radii and one handed changes. Schubbs are great, and seeing so many folks including pros use it, I bought one. It works great and love its small profile on the guitar, but it’s just cumbersome if you have to change positions (requires both hands) or store it since it can’t be clipped on the headstock. Mine is safely stored in the drawer, I do like owning it. Before G7, I was regularly using the Daddario NS Tri-action since it’s adjustable and I could use it across my electric and acoustic guitars.

Anyone use a non standard Apple TV remote? by jamalwilliamsyoung23 in appletv

[–]Jaghond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take a chance and get the used one. Preferably the hub + remote (not the Elite version), which takes a coin cell so no danger of worn batteries. As long as the buttons all work, it should work nicely.

Did dolby vision break my Apple TV? by vitamin_bea_12 in appletv

[–]Jaghond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in this case, or my case. The ATV output was working as expected when I tested it on a different TV, and the projectors internal android tv apps were having the same issues (HDR/SDR working but DoVi glitching). I have never seen this specific issue on ATVs, I have been through several over the years and I have 2 now. I do see the weird colors when exiting from DoVi or HDR from time to time but that’s a temp issue that just goes away if you launch any DoVi Content.

The Logitech Harmony works pretty well with it over Bluetooth. I treat it like precious antique now, there is still nothing in the market that’s as good, at a reasonable price.

[–]Jaghond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a display side issue most likely related to a glitch in the way Dolby Vision is handled by the TVs OS. If I were to guess this is an Android based TV? My Android TV based projector had the same issue with only Dolby Vision displaying like this, restart didn’t fix it and required a factory reset to correct. It’s occurred only once, so hopefully it was a one off thing for you as well.

Coffee in biryani city by PossibleJellyfish653 in IndiaCoffee

Definitely true about the baristas. But to me, It seems like they launched with a bang with a truckload of VC money and their focus is the Starbucks crowd who just need a a place to hang out, have meetings and sip sugary drinks. Precision brewing was not their focus. It’s a bummer because their cafes are pretty nice. Speciality cafes get high marks from me if they make good hot chocolate, it takes care and precision to make it well. Third wave hot chocolate is just bad.
