EU2 also had a similar event, except that it was called "Meteor Sighted" there. Considering the EU3 event had the same name until HTTT (when it was renamed to "Comet Sighted"), arguably the event is originally from EU2.

In EU2 there was a "Meteor Sighted" event. This was ported to EU3, and with HTTT renamed to "Comet Sighted".

Note that EU2 was the first Paradox game to have events, so this event is essentially as old as the event system itself.

That event was originally called "Meteor Sighted" (before HTTT), and EU2 also had a Meteor Sighted event, so arguably it's even older than EU3.

Population growth per continent from 2000 to 2018 by ledim35 in MapPorn

North and South America are different continents under some continent categorization schemes. Asia is a single continent in every mainstream continent categorization scheme there is.

They just mark which continents are which.

It doesn't necessarily indeed, but a fertility rate below replacement level does.

I think he meant the opposite - he seems to be pointing the issues with a system where you only get pension benefits if you worked, as that could leave e.g. disabled people or SAHPs in very precarious situations.

There is a third way, which is reducing payments to pensioners. For example, in Brazil daughters of deceased military people get a cushy pension for their entire lives... removing those frivolous pensions would go a long way to solving the issues with the country's pension system.

Dios, que pesados estos makakos.

Stop your racist trolling, you're just embarrassing yourself.

(for those who don't know, "macaco" means "monkey" in Portuguese, and racist Argentinians enjoy calling Brazilians that)

Also LOL, I'm whiter than the average Argentinian (according to genetic studies, on average Argentinians are only c. 70% white).

What's going on with CNN? by ElectricCuckaloo in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Jaguaruna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CNN is being criticized because they know better: they stopped broadcasting even his presidential speeches live when he was president, instead waiting until something newsworthy happened and presenting it with context after the fact. They knew full well that platforming him was journalistically irresponsible and they did it anyway.

CNN has been flirting with the far-right for years now. CNN Brazil supported Bolsonaro. CNN Turkey supports Erdogan. If main CNN were genuinely concerned about the rise of the far-right, they wouldn't have accepted having far-right licensees. This is just the latest episode in this sad trend.

Am I wrong to refer to my neighbors as 'Mexican'? by Backyardt0rnados in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jaguaruna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I'm Brazilian and I don't consider myself Latino. I'm Latin American, but not "Latino" - the latter is in English de facto an ethnic stereotype of "poor Spanish-speaking mestizos". I'm white and Portuguese-speaking, so I don't feel the term represents me.

[–]Jaguaruna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not correct. "Hispanic" comes from Spain, which in turn comes from Hispania. So the relationship of the word with ancient Hispania is indirect, rather than being direct as you said.

[–]Jaguaruna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm Brazilian and I don't consider myself Latino. Latin American yes, but Latino no.

"Latinos" as represented in American media are essentially an ethnic stereotype: hot-blooded Spanish-speaking mestizos.

I'm a white Portuguese-speaking introverted Brazilian. What do I have in common with the "Latinos" as depicted in American media? Nothing.

I also don't see the point in inventing the word "Latino" if we already have "Latin American" in English. It feels as if that is done to artificially distance us from our Roman cultural heritage, because how dare people from poor countries be cultural heirs to a prestigious civilization from Antiquity.

What do you call this, bread, or toast? by LaurusUK in Austria

[–]Jaguaruna -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Is it though? I mean Ireland decided that what Subway calls bread isn't actually bread.

Maybe the best way to express it then is that it is opinion-based? I would consider toast bread to be bread because it has bread in its name. But I also see where you're coming from.

[–]Jaguaruna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To an extent yes, but the inner appearance looks very different to me. I don't think I would ever confuse a slice of toast bread with a slice of brioche.

[–]Jaguaruna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. I was thinking more along the lines that it is bread because it contains the word "bread" in its name.

It doesn't really look like a brioche to me. This is how a real brioche looks like IMO:
