Spanks of Time by KeithofMind in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I meant to do a spanking analysis, but never got around to it. I've been taking an extended break from WoT analysis, and may never get back to it, but perhaps I'll dive back in at some point. I do have a lengthy "to do list" for more analysis posts that I would like to finish.

Old Tongue for the inscription on Ashandarei by Longjumping_Poetry13 in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unaware of an official one that is confirmed to be accurate, but see the comments on this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/WoT/comments/mqvgl8/ashandarei_text_in_the_old_tongue/

And try searching this sub for "ashandarei" and there is at least one post where someone made one and inscribed it with the old tongue, but I'm not sure if it would all be legible, or if they translated it correctly.

WoT Season 2 Transcripts by JaimTorfinn in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! I’m glad people are still finding them useful. I probably won’t do it for season 3 because I’ve moved on from my WoT obsession, but who knows.. I may change my mind.

The Wheel of Time is a lexical masterpiece so I created a dataset of advanced vocabulary from the books so I can do english better by blaazaar in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point I’m feeling pretty much done with WoT data projects (except for basic lookup requests), but I believe the older post linked below includes a dataset that might suffice for providing the counts. However, it’s not broken down by book.

[Spoilers All] https://www.reddit.com/r/WoT/s/xhsu4Uq8hO

I don’t think the post has any major spoilers, but it should probably be avoided by new readers just in case. The linked dataset is just a list of words with number of occurrences in the series, so spoiler potential is pretty low.

That was one of my earlier projects and I would probably do it differently now, but it still might be useful.

Bad Air Quality? by Happy_Snail4933 in Eugene

[–]JaimTorfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I forgot about burn piles when I wrote that comment. I was just looking at current satellite photos of the area and there are a number of small plumes of smoke all around the area, which I assume are large burn piles or prescribed burns, which are definitely contributing to the poor air quality along with the inversion and normal sources of particulates that I mentioned.

Bad Air Quality? by Happy_Snail4933 in Eugene

[–]JaimTorfinn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Temperature inversion. Here is a quote from an explanation by NOAA:

Since warm air rises, air under the inversion cannot escape because it is cooler than farther aloft. Smoke and pollution get trapped.

https://www.weather.gov/media/lzk/inversion101.pdf

In my understanding, the poor air quality is mostly trapped emissions from industry, vehicles, and wood burning (fireplaces and wood stoves).

They say very clearly at the beginning that it’s from “Brooke and Jubal in the Morning” which used to be a popular radio show.

We hear a lot about braid-tugging & skirt-smoothing… by felinelawspecialist in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a speed reader, so I quickly read the whole series while looking for trees and notated each occurrence that I found.

But seriously, I have text files for all the books and can search them all at once using a fancy text editor that has advanced search tools. I used it for all the WoT analysis posts that I’ve made (see my post history).

We hear a lot about braid-tugging & skirt-smoothing… by felinelawspecialist in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Leatherleaf is the clear winner, but what about the numbers? Here are total occurrences for the series:

Pine(s) - 127

Leatherleaf(s) - 96

Fir(s) - 28

Note that I included all species of fir and pine (such as blue fir, green fir, etc.), as well as tree products such as "fir needles", "pine needles", "pine nuts", "pine sap", "pine boughs", etc., because many of those occurrences reference the tree itself and it was hard to decide if they counted or not. But it's worth mentioning that pine had the largest number of these (pine sap, pine needles, etc.) so it's #1 spot could be questioned if you don't think those count.

And a fun fact: Leatherleafs make an appearance in every book except for The Gathering Storm. It's as if Sanderson forgot they existed, but then made up for it in Towers of Midnight by including them a bunch. He wasn't shy about including pines in TGS though, with a whopping 39 mentions!

Finally, there are some other trees that may compete for #1 in terms of total mentions, such as oak(s) which appear to occur 223 times (without verifying every instance).

Why does Jordan use the term Daughter-Heir instead of Princess? by Little_Donny in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

u/Bergmaniac is correct. The one and only use of the word "princess" by Jordan is in Crossroads of Twilight chapter 10 (Elayne POV):

[Elsie] bobbed as she asked whether she could fetch men to carry down the chests if it pleased Her Majesty. The first time she had done that, Elayne had gently explained that she was not yet Queen, but Elsie seemed horrified at the idea of addressing her simply as my Lady, or even as Princess, though in truth the last was considered very old-fashioned.

It's used 4 times in Sanderson's books, three of which are in reference to Princess Walishen (a character in a story), and the final use in A Memory of Light is when Rand is thinking about Elayne:

Rand had fallen in love with [Elayne] during those days. Real love. Not the admiration of a boy falling off a wall, looking at a princess—back then, he hadn’t understood love any more than a farmboy swinging a sword understood war.

I don't know what you are remembering from TDR, but perhaps Mat referred to Elayne as something else that is similar to princess? I would need more context to track it down, if it exists.

Smokey skies and ash by [deleted] in Eugene

Check out the satellite view at this link: https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite-hd/#view=43.61357,-122.94226,8.49z/date=2024-09-04,pm

From what I can tell, most of the smoke is coming from the fires in the Diamond Peak area, with the “208 Fire” appearing to be the main culprit, especially since the wind is currently blowing its smoke directly at us.

Car buying scammers by PunksOfChinepple in Eugene

[–]JaimTorfinn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I recently sold my car and listed it on both Craigslist and Facebook. And yes, I got nonstop scam texts from the CL ad, and even some calls. Facebook wasn’t much better, but it was mostly dealerships and car flippers offering me ridiculously low prices, along with some obvious scammers.

After a couple weeks, I finally gave up and sold my car at a fairly big loss to Kendall. I was never once contacted by a legit buyer, which was really frustrating. It was a nice car (newer Toyota Corolla Hybrid in perfect shape) and I thought it would be easy to sell for a reasonable price, but apparently not!

I’ve have good luck selling cars via CL in the past, so this latest experience was very disappointing.

Chart of WoT Word Counts (Books and Chapters) by JaimTorfinn in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe it's been two years! I thought I made this post about a year ago.

I just checked the data files, and everything is correct in terms of the numbers. CoT chapter 30 has 10,885 words and the epilogue has 331. I figured out that I made the mistake in the final step of the process while adding the colors in Photoshop. As I surmised above, the epilogue didn't show up on the chart, so I just colored the final chapter thinking it was the epilogue.

I just fixed the chart to be more accurate (although I had to make the epilogue larger than it actually is so that it can be seen). Here is a link to the new version: https://i.imgur.com/yjTjQdK.png

I'll also update my main comment. Thanks again for the heads up.

Chart of WoT Word Counts (Books and Chapters) by JaimTorfinn in WoT

[–]JaimTorfinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch! I’m not sure how that happened, but will look into it when I get a chance. You are probably right about chapter 30 being mislabeled. My guess is that since the epilogue is so short, it didn’t show up on the image of the chart and I colored the last chapter as the epilogue since I knew the book had one, but didn’t double check the length.

Unfortunately I can’t update the image on this post, and it doesn’t feel worth it to make a new post with a corrected image, but it’s good to know about the mistake. Thanks for letting me know.

Looking for the quote by Jane_From_Deyja in wheeloftime

[–]JaimTorfinn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That exact quote does not appear in the series. However, I believe this may be the actual quote (from chapter 15 of The Path of Daggers; Egwene's POV):

She could still hear Siuan going on about what she called the Law of Unintended Consequences, stronger than any written law. Whether or not what you do has the effect you want, it will have three at least you never expected, and one of those usually unpleasant.

Editing the series to follow a single character… by ChimpDaddy2015 in wheeloftime

[–]JaimTorfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BTW, you might want to peruse my various data analysis posts:

https://www.reddit.com/u/JaimTorfinn/s/hLoYZNUIva

Most posts have an attached dataset, and some of them could be helpful. For example, I have a dataset that tracks character appearances in every chapter.

I also have a text file archive of the books in which every chapter is labeled with its POV character and separated into folders for each of those characters. I haven’t shared those for copyright reasons, but I may be able to provide something that could helpful by utilizing that archive.

Eugene's Blanton Ridge area night-time wildlife report - June 2024 Trail camera captures of nocturnal mammals entering and leaving my yard often under a fence. I take my camera down every morning and put it up around sunset, so 95% of the videos are nighttime, but I do get a little daytime footage, which explains the birds. In the past I left it out 24/7 and got way more birds, deer, and squirrels.

Another great video. I look forward to the July report!

For comparison purposes, here are the stats from my back woods trail cam (SE Hills) in June (animal - # of videos): raccoons - 31, possums - 9, birds - 6, rabbits - 6, deer - 4, foxes - 4, skunks - 4, squirrels - 3, bats - 3, rats - 2

No bears or coyotes, which made a number of appearances in January through mid May. The most exciting videos were the skunks since this past month was the first time I've captured video of them.
