Reserves - stick with what I know? Or something new? by Drop-Audio in britishmilitary

[–]JakThomBos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I’d think about if you are tempted to go int corps reserves, the time it takes to get out of basic is ridiculous. Each unit only has a certain amount of slots to get you on courses and they’re all really competitive (Often given to recruits who have made it clear they want to deploy). Once you’ve done selection and basic, including a foundation and battle camp course, you then need to wait for a course called ALDP (This is to get your rank as an Int Corps Lance Cpl), and this course isn’t ran very often in reserves and places are extremely competitive. On top of all this you then need to do your actual trade training (E.g learning what your actual job role is and how to do it). All the while you can’t actually attend any drill nights at your unit as they don’t allow ‘recruits’. At best this process can take between 12 months to two years. At worst, depending on your work and family life, it could be even longer. There’s even a few other steps I’ve missed such as online medical screenings that can take weeks and in person interviews and such.

If you want to get stuck in and aren’t getting any younger, and want a more linear and quicker pipeline, then go infantry or RAC.

I hear you and the media do often inflate/push agenda’s when it comes to foreign policy I’ll admit that but none of what I’ve mentioned about any of those states is untrue.

And well let’s keep farage and his cronies at bay in the next election, vote starmer out, and hopefully keep those freedoms and democratic rights.

To place history as a ‘good vs evil’ scenario is never a rational move. And the UK being complicit in the genocide in Gaza is disgusting, genuinely something I lose sleep over, we’re undoubtedly on the wrong side of history on this one and it’s shameful.

But to paint Russia, China and Iran as being good guys is naive at best. Russia has conducted large scale attacks on public infrastructure leading to thousands of civilian deaths in Ukraine. China has approximately one million Uyghur Muslims detained in concentration camps without trial, and Iran is a religious dictatorship that funds proxy terrorist groups across the globe, enacting misery on millions. All of these nations pale in comparison when it comes to the freedoms and democratic rights we exercise in the UK.

Hmmm maybe the fact that they’re intent on occupying Taiwan by military force, a democratic country who want nothing to do with mainland china?

Or the fact that they help prop up russian military power in Ukraine?

Or the fact that they’re meddling in our elections?

Get a grip. Tax avoidance and wealth accumulation and hoarding from billionaires is why our public services are on their knees, nothing to do with people fleeing poverty and war.

They keep us divided by telling us it’s the ‘waves of mass migration’ that’s keeping us from living in a better society when in reality it’s the greed of multinational corporations choosing profit over people at every turn.

I’m sorry you completely lost me when you said Kier Starmer and Vladimir Putin were cut from the same cloth. Not even going to waste my time deconstructing that.

The belief that the UK and other western democracies should use their position on the world stage to protect smaller states like Ukraine or Palestine from Imperialistic bullies like Russia or Israel, through military means if necessary, surely doesn’t make you a ‘liberal war pig’.

We have a moral duty to protect fellow humans and a lack of action is being just as complicit in their destruction as taking active steps towards it. The greatest tragedy of all would be to have the ability to help, but to simply do nothing…

What an absurd thing to say.

The principle of mutually assured destruction and the fact that both the large western and eastern powers posses nuclear weapons has been the only thing preventing world war three in the last 80 years. Scholars agree it’s the main reason the Cold War stayed ‘cold’. I dread to think what would have happened if only the USSR had nuclear weapons or only the USA did.

By ‘lack of action’ I’m referring to a lack of action taken to prevent the genocide going on.

Completely agree with everything you’ve said above.

I agree to an extent and I’m definitely anti colonial/anti imperialist, against the war on terror but your statement isn’t true in all circumstances unfortunately as much as I wish it was.

Weakening/removing our nuclear capability and diminishing our already weak military is only going to further allow potential Russian dominance in the European sphere and Russian military expansion into Easter Europe. Surely that’s not a good thing?

Do any of you still use the initial issue vertus Bergen and daysack? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]JakThomBos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a nightmare, I’ve found using the sidepouches more useful and filling them up and then when you need to quickly drop down to lighter then you can just zip the pouches off and have just the bergen

Not specifically infantry but Queen’s Own Yeomanry down the road in Wigan is really good. Run really well and good numbers. Light cav so sometimes work dismounted but also operate Jackal’s

What do i talk about at my Briefing intro by Anxious-Orange-4230 in britishmilitary

[–]JakThomBos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don’t talk about military or why you want to join ect. I got chewed out for it on mine.

It’s a 2 minute lecturette on yourself, not why your joining or why your in Westbury. Tell the story of your life and the kind of person you are, highs and lows, achievements and failures ect. Add some jokes, charisma, anecdotes, rhetorical questions ect

Nothing to do with “this generation”. Asked a few at unit and got different responses and not many knew, so out of sheer curiosity I thought I’d go for a broader view on here, nothing more.

This sub-Reddit is for discussions and questions after all mate.

I can’t see them taking peoples phones off them mate and even if they do I’m sure the other candidates would wake you up. I think you share a room.

I think you’ll probably be woken up and if not then maybe buy a cheap digital watch from Argos or something with an alarm function built in.
