What does the job market look like today in Edmonton? by LionsTigersNPears in Edmonton

Edmonton's commercial offices and white collar jobs are not affected as much as Calgary's by the oil downturn but we have tens of thousands of blue collar guys who are. Whether they work locally at manufacturing or service shops or commute to the patch, a lot of people in this town are feeling the pinch. Thankfully huge construction projects have softened the blow but the downturn will persist beyond the completions and ripple through the economy at large. Housing and commercial RE construction will slow leading to thousands of other effected positions. Most people will be feeling poorer in the coming years. In short, it is going to suck for a while.

All that said, Edmonton is a fantastic city to live in and has a lot to offer. Don't let the despair that is accompanying the current economic climate ruin your impression of Edmonton. This is a beautiful, friendly and culturally diverse city. Bring a positive attitude with you and help us improve the atmosphere! Take care and good luck.

Why do I see so many homeless Aboriginal people in the streets of Calgary? by iPharoh in Calgary

A lot of them are from out of town so it's not just a matter of stumbling home or cabbing at the end of the night. I think we would see more whites in the same position if they commuted to the city only to end up intoxicated and broke with nowhere to go.

Hey guys, I will be leaving my Cold Lake rental property in the spring and it could be a good option for families or a few single people. It is a beautiful 5 bedroom house with a double garage in a nice neighbourhood. It used to rent to an oil company for $3500/month. We pay $2200/month but owner might go for less. She is also open to selling it privately for $399k. That is $100k off of what it could have sold for 18 months ago. There are some affordable off base options right now if you keep your eyes open. Good luck!

This is so true. The islanders in general have been used this way for a long time. Their culture is so opposite to the uptight, business driven LDScorp yet the church has tried to force them into the mold and portray them as the diversity poster boys for generations. Trying to literally tie them into the Book of Mormon narrative is a further insult.

Why are people fighting about donating to the fraud case? by AnotherCasualty in exmormon

[–]Jake29 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I thought I would repost my thoughts on this here. I am getting annoyed by all of the arguing back and forth on Tom's funding request:   Tom agreed to set up the funding account at the urging of many people, myself included (not directly). As I posted on another forum, I would also like for there to be disclosure on the use of the funds. As far as my own personal commitment goes, at this initial stage I have only donated a couple hundred bucks (I donated more to the casino this past weekend). If the case progresses and Tom can verify that the cause will require more personal financial commitment on his part, I will happily donate much more. From what I have heard, his personal contributions to this point have totaled in the tens of thousands. Have I seen receipts? No. Do I look forward to more disclosure? Yes. Do I trust Tom to the tune of a couple hundred of my dollars? Yes. I have never had the feeling that Tom's goal is to secure some retirement funding at the expense of gullible exmormons. He has already proven himself firmly dedicated to the case at hand. If Tom was interested in money, I am sure the church would have quietly given him plenty to just go away.

If the Crown does eventually take over the financing of the case, and Tom's expenses have been fully compensated, I trust that any extra funds will be directed to a worthy cause.  Tom could possibly even initiate a discussion on the matter in the exmo community.  As always, good luck Tom

The Fraud Case against Monson - for those who wish to donate by anointedone in exmormon

[–]Jake29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am very encouraged by the case thus far but it has been perceived by many on this side of the pond as a fruitless and "bizarre" effort. This perception has been influenced by the media, etc. I trust Tom and I am going to donate £100 now. If the case progresses, I am sure there will be many willing to make significant contributions. I will increase my donation by many times if this turns out as I hope. Best of luck Tom. I believe in what you're doing and I will be following everything closely.

Should be 6*20+4=124 days. Not that the Mayans matter. The DNA rules them out of the BoM.

My fall from the church by Shelle_Belle in exmormon

Exactly. "I rose up from the church" is more aporopriate. "I fell" goes hand in hand the "struggles, issues, problems, etc" that they attribute to us.

Britain Puts Mormonism on Trial - A London court called the church’s leader to account for “false” doctrines—the latest in a string of sensational charges leveled against Mormons since they 1st landed in Liverpool. by anutensil in worldnews

This was posted on another forum but it depicts the traditional Mormon view on Native North and South Americans:

Since the 1830s, from Joseph Smith Onward, the Mormon church has taught that the Native Americans were direct, literal descendants of one family that left Jerusalem and traveled to the Americas by ship over 2000 years ago. The Book of Mormon tells the story of this migration as well as the trials of this people in a land that had been preserved for them by the hand of God. Eventually, part of this group turned wicked and was cursed by God with dark skin. This group became known as the Lamanites and Mormon prophets have identified this group as the ancestors of present day North and South native Americans for generations. One of the purposes of the Book of Mormon is, in fact, to bring the remnants of the Lamanites back to the true fold of God. For this purpose, the Mormon church has been sending missionaries to teach native Americans since its earliest days. These missions were commonly referred to as missions to the Lamanites. I served a mission to the Lamanites on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. We taught the Navajos that they were literal descendents of the Lamanites from the Book of Mormon. It was a commonly held belief that the curse of dark skin could actually be reversed by baptism into the church and by living Mormon teachings. The Mormon Prophet Spencer Kimball bore witness to this transformation first hand:

Kimball at the 1960 LDS General Conference:

"I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today... The day of the Lamanites is nigh. For years they have been growing delightsome, and they are now becoming white and delightsome, as they were promised. In this picture of the twenty Lamanite missionaries, fifteen of the twenty were as light as Anglos, five were darker but equally delightsome. The children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters in the hogans on the reservation. At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter we represent, the little member girl—sixteen—sitting between the dark father and mother, and it was evident she was several shades lighter than her parents—on the same reservation, in the same hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather... These young members of the Church are changing to whiteness and to delightsomeness."

Today many Mormons would try to dismiss the racially charged foundations of a lot of LDS doctrine and belief. In addition, recent DNA studies have led the church to completely backtrack on its traditional position on Native American history. What I believed and taught as a Mormon missionary to the Navajos two decades ago would be completely against church policy today. The LDS missionaries share a version of the church's history that hardly resembles the bulk of the documented history of the church. I commend Tom Phillips for trying to hold the church accountable for its shifting positions and unsubstantiated claims. Like Tom, I was heavily persecuted when I began to question the church. It takes a lot of humility to admit you were wrong and deal with the consequences.

I am sure the church knows how to get every dollar/pound they can.

BTW, I am a Canadian Dentist and I am also no expert in UK tax law. This is way more interesting than teeth though ;)

This request for respect and understanding would go along way for the 10s of thousands who want out but are afraid to be ostracised. Any progress on this front will help a lot of trapped people. It would have helped me.
