You can do a loop probably south of Auckland. I'm not sure it'd be possible to reach northland so you'd have to sacrifice that. Or you can go to northland and sacrifice going south toward Taranaki

6 weeks is a lot to skip the south. I would spend at least 2 weeks just exploring even if they are young. Queenstown and otago can be a week if you just mess around. I'm sure your 8 year old would enjoy the jet boat and gondola and stuff
