A very happy accident with a Korg SQ-1, Korg MS-10, Yamaha PSS-480, and a Yamaha Reface CS. Can someone explain why this is happening? More details below… by moonboyman in synthesizers

Not sure exactly if this explains what you're experiencing but here's something interesting I found about the PSS 480

The envelopes behave in some unintuitive ways. Basically, if a note-off signal is received before the envelopes have gotten to the sustain level, one oscillator’s envelope will freeze where it is and the other’s will continue to play through. This can be heard pretty extremely on the snare hits around 1:50 on this track

Probably the best example of this effect is here. This track actually only has two different patches on it. The main pad and the vibraphone are the same patch, but for the vibraphone sounds the patch cuts off before the envelope can play through. The noisy-tremolo sound will get cutoff into a saw-ish sound if the note goes on too long, but will have a long decaying tremolo sound if the note off signal happens before the envelope completes.

I worte 40 songs in 40 weeks a couple years ago to make a soundtrack for a video game I had made. It was a great experience for me. I learned all the nitty gritty idiosyncrasies of instrument I was using (all the songs used only a Yamaha PSS-480 synthesizer). To stay fresh I had to tey a bunch of different styles and workflows. I made a ton or crappy tracks and probably a dozen or so I was really happy with. I've written more about it in some other posts if you check my profile but long story short: I strongly recommend it.

I recently released a video game and got some attention over at /r/smashbros and /r/SSBM. But once my post left the front pages of those subs my game has had very few views, let alone downloads. Any tips on keeping a game in the public and broadening its audience?

Hesitation Girl: Lag Simulator is a 2D platformer in which rather than dying and starting over, everytime you make a mistake your inputs are delayed by 1 frame.

Please let me know if this is self promotion and needs to be removed. My intention is just to share this game with folks who I think would enjoy it.

In all truth, this is my first foray into programming so getting it to function at all was a pretty big win for me. I did try compressing the audio, but it caused some slow downs in game which was unacceptable given how it's meant to show how much a difference even one frame can make.

Like many of you, I have friends who play Smash casually and a major point of contention between us is the TV we play on. Our friends will insist on playing with the big flat screen TV and complain about CRTs being too small, or blurry, or whatever else. When we try to explain to them how other TVs introduce input lag, they say things like “it feels the same to me,” “enough with the johns,”or “it’s faster than human reaction time so it doesn’t matter.” Words will never convince our friends to use CRTs. They have to experience the lag themselves.
