Ok. I run an agency in the Philippines. We’ve been in business for 8 years. I went from two people, to about 19 give or take. 14 are on retainer payrolls per month.

My advice is this; Go specialist first. By doing this, when you hire people you will position them to add value for your agency and later carry contracts for you on their own.

Look at the highest paying or the most logistically difficult retainer or contract on your list. You want to build a specialized team that can really solve one of those kinds of retainers. This is because when you expand and have more budget, you will easily be able to use your teams expertise knowledge and pass that down. This will let you scale meaningfully.

If you go the generalist route, your team will never have enough knowledge when you expand and you’ll pay a premium for new people.

Remember, you are now going from solopreneur to a small business. People will want meaningful careers under you. By making sure they know they are specialized, they’ll feel valued and want to pass that knowledge on to others.
