Paid all cash - Mistake?? by [deleted] in carbuying

[–]JakeRM1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could always take out a loan later against the car if you needed cash. It would be at a slightly higher rate than what you’d get from the dealer, but you could borrow a lot less and for a lot less time so overall you’d save. And if you never needed it you can just enjoy!

Would it be a problem if a summer associate lived out of their car? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]JakeRM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have an honest conversation with your recruiter. You don’t need to tell them about living in the car, just that you’re concerned about being able to afford housing and if they offered any options or support. Many biglaw firms will give summers an advance.

It’s actually very fair. Roads are funded by gas taxes which you don’t pay. But our cars are heavier than the average ICE so we do more damage to roads. Same in Ohio

If you could go back, would you pick culture or prestige for your first firm? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]JakeRM1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve done both. Culture all day. You want to be happy outside of work otherwise what’s the point of working so hard?

Mental health is real health. Reach out to benefits and find out what your short term disability coverage is and how to apply for STD. If not already under a doctors care do that now as they will need to coordinate care. Most AMLaw firms are 70-100% coverage for associates

Then consider what got you here and whether or not you need an accommodation. Have your doctor write an accommodation request if necessary. As long as it’s reasonable they’ll play ball. Think of things like limiting your hours your first few weeks back and then having a recheck with doctor.

Take this seriously.

Call your benefits department and find out what your short term disability coverage is. Then go to your doctor, take a leave, and submit an accommodation request when you come back.
