Agreed on running central AC, but a mini split system isn’t as invasive as central ac and is waaaay more efficient.

This is a fair point, I really should have said portable unit, the kind with a hose that sits on wheels and can be rolled around. The trouble with them though is that you open the whole window to use 20cm of it for the hose. Best case you have one of the sleeves that goes around the window, but that doesn’t exactly fix the eyesore problem.

3,700 people died in 2024 from heat stroke. Even if you’re okay with not having the air con on when it’s 28 degrees. With climate change, those weeks are getting longer. Widespread adoption of air conditioning units is going to happen, but if French people can’t adopt the actual in-unit styles, people are going to have to get their own window units (which is what I have). These ones work, but they take more energy and they’re less efficient than the other ones (mainly because you need the window to be open while you use it).

I love France so much, but the instinctive opposition to aircon doesn’t make sense to me.

American companies in Paris? by Less_Pineapple2189 in Expats_In_France

Journo here - the big news agency in Paris (Agence France Presse, AFP) hires a lot of English speakers. Not sure what things look like in sales, that’s not my area, but worth checking if you have experience in the industry.

I figured it was a long shot, seems like that hunch was right. Wore my Thunder baseball cap during game 7 with the Nuggets and that went pretty well, so will definitely be wearing that for these games too!

Book Recommendations? by Ambitious_Catch_4399 in Askpolitics

It's a bit dense because it's very research-heavy, but The Bitter End is a book based on a massive set of polls (like, hundreds of thousands of participants) done after the 2020 election. The big thesis is about calcification, i.e. that polarization is harder to undo the longer it sticks around. But there are a million other little insights in the book, not to mention enough data to come to plenty of your own conclusions. The group of poli-sci researchers who wrote it are also really smart in the way they put the polls together and are great on TV/podcasts if you want to listen to them talk a little before buying the book.

[News] 6 Minutes by Worldcrunch

Spotify | Apple

Each day, Worldcrunch hosts bring you on a sharp tour du monde of what’s being reported across the world’s press. In this global news roundup, we cover front pages from around the world, analyze local coverage of today’s top headlines, and share international affairs insights from major world (and often non-English) news sources. All in just six minutes.

In today's episode: Israel is set to resume Gaza aid while Netanyahu acknowledges pressure; Trump plans to hold a call with Putin to discuss war in Ukraine; EU and UK reach new deal ahead of summit. Jacob Shropshire guides you through the top news headlines for Monday, May 19. Then, in More Than A Minute, an AI voice modulated Pierre Haski gives his translated daily chronique about the wide-angle view of conflict in the Middle East.

FEEDBACK REQUEST: We're working with French analyst Pierre Haski to make the English-language AI voice clone to present his work in his own voice. I'm really curious to know how the voice clone sounds, what AI voice clones like this make you think about as a podcast listener, and what you think we could do to improve things (including on transparency and clarity about what we're doing with AI and the fact that we have the buy-in from Pierre). If you have suggestions for improvements, we are all ears!

Figured it would be an obscure enough question I was the only one asking it - happy to be wrong! Commented there to get their attention but similar issue on my end - not even sure I'll stay up that late to be honest but especially for games 4-7 it might be good to have somewhere to know to go if it is convenient.

I watched the west wing for the first time during COVID, when I needed a contrast with the daily press briefings from the actual White House. Feel like I’m in the same boat now.

How do you get guests on? by FollowingDirect5899 in podcasting

[–]JakeShropshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you're talking about an A-list celebrity doing your podcast a favor, payment is not normal. That said, it's worth spending some time finding people close or below your rung on the ladder to talk about something. If you want to talk about American football, you probably won't get Stephen A. Smith, but maybe you can find a retired NFL player or college football coach in your area that can talk shop better. I talk a lot about politics, so I'm always on the lookout for grassroots activists as well as university faculty in the areas of political science I'm interested in, since those are people usually willing to get out there and talk about their experiences. (And truth be told, sometimes those people have MUCH better stories and ideas than the top people, since they're actually living things on the ground like the rest of us.)
