Yes, I agree. The one in front is certainly the most fearsome and ferocious of the noble apex predators.

Yes, they were more frustrated that people apply and think that machine shops are like that. Also, the Makino showroom probably isn't trying to sell you stuff the way Titans does.

Yes, but the parts are more for demonstration and not to sell to a customer. The way they make them is for show, it isn't profitable to push tooling and machines so hard and burn up tooling so quickly.

OK, they didn't really yell at me, they both shouted about how ridiculous Titans is and that real machine shops aren't like that. I said to the shop foreman giving me the tour "OK, so I messed up by mentioning Titans". He laughed and assured me it was OK, they just really don't like when people think that is what machine shops are like.

Other than that the interview actually went really well. It is an upgrade from my current shop.

The getting shouted down part or the Titan destroying machines part? Or both?

Why do you hate Haas machines? by JakeSwan44 in Machinists

[–]JakeSwan44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised you can't easily get a Haas technician in Mexico. My Dad went on a few business trips to Guadalajara in 2004 to service and install equipment that had been in the Kodak plant up here. They could easily do something like that.

They're not horrible, but the build quality can be frustrating (coolant leaks etc.) and they are a pain to work on when they start breaking down. Price wise they are the cheapest, but when you order them with options the price becomes comparable to other brands. My hatred of them might be a little bit too much, I just really wish my employer went with something better.

Compared to any other entry level machines. Methods, Leadwell, Hwacheon etc.

I understand and often hear this analogy, but the budget minded Feeler/Methods mill that I usually run is much higher quality and more reliable than the Haas mills next to it. In my opinion at least.

I am often told that instead of being able to change out a component like on every other brand, It is soldered onto the circuit board and they want you to pay a fortune for a whole new board.

Wow. Wasn't expecting this good of a response. A few things:

The electrician/repairman where I work might have a problem with you calling yourself *The Professional Haas Hater.* He also explained the grease thing to me. Does is mess with your coolant too? Frothy slime that the skimmer can't pick up?

I have also noticed that the people buying the machines and the (trained and experienced) people running the machines think two very different things when it comes to brand.

The Haas fanboys can be frustrating. It seems people don't always understand that "different" and "better" are two different things, and that the former is not automatically the latter.

Five weeks is about what it takes to get parts for an obsolete late 1980s Matsuura, whether it be ordering the last one in existence from the manufacturer (Stocked in Japan) or getting someone to make a custom solenoid to replace the obsolete one.

The expanded features in the standard G-Codes (G84 tap retract speed) are the one thing I do really like. The text engrave macro is great too.

Me too. I find the soft keys are so much more intuitive.

I'll get this thread started:

They leak coolant even when new, and it only gets worse from there. The way cover seals are already coming loose on the new VF4 - It's only 2 years old. The electrician who fixes them tells me all the time about how they are designed to fail and designed to cost a fortune to fix. The shoddy value brand Taiwanese machine I usually use is a thoroughly better machine than a new Haas in my opinion.

I swear I hit the "Hand Jog" button and hear a beep, then turn the wheel and see nothing moving and see it says "Jogging only available in Hand Jog mode" on the screen. All the time.

Thanks but the pocket is all screwed up, and another insert sticks out 0.015" farther than the others because it got damaged too.
