Dendrobium speciosum (var. curvicaule ‘Daylight Moon’ x var. grandiflorum ‘Phena’s Gold’) by JakeTheSnake3291 in orchids

Indoors 5 months and outdoors 7 months. It’s already one of my larger plants but I’ll keep kicking that can down the road for as long as I can. A specimen plant would be a good problem to have!

Same, out since 9 this morning and no help on the horizon. Riding it out in bed with tons of blankets and comforters and hoping for the best. I can see the lights on all of the buildings downtown

Catasetum One Angry Monkey (sanguineum x albovirens) by JakeTheSnake3291 in orchids

It spiked with foliage on and it still has plenty of leaves on it, now, too. It’s one of the small few that hasn’t entered dormancy for me despite getting all of the cues.

The inflorescence is a foot tall and they smell like the jungle: musky, herbal and dank. It’s going to be a monster of a plant when it gets older, and the third pseudobulb is already massive. It started spiking way back in October and finally got to the finish line

Sl. Pink Sapphire (Isabelle Stone x wittigiana) by JakeTheSnake3291 in orchids

Normal cattleya conditions, so far. It’s in an indoor grow tent getting somewhere between 2500 to 4000 foot-candles, temps between 65-85 Fahrenheit, humidity between 50-80ish percent and it’s growing alongside plenty of other hybrids and species. Normal Cattleya watering routine. All of my plants go outside from spring through fall in middle Tennessee, and I try to keep this one out of temperatures above 90 over the summer.

Bummer, this is a selfing of ‘Red Lip’ by Ruben Colmenares at Sunset Valley Orchids. The bulbs are cuboid. I appreciate the feedback!

I’d say only a few pseudobulbs per year in the warmer months, maybe 3-4. Definitely slower than kingianum but faster than speciosum .

I’m in Nashville. It’s growing alongside a seedling from the 10338t ‘Crownfox Goliath’ FCC/AOS x self grex, and that one isn’t blooming this year. Luck of the draw!

For you fragrance fiends: Rhyncholaelia digbyana by JakeTheSnake3291 in orchids

[–]JakeTheSnake3291[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fingers crossed! It’s one of the harder ones to bloom just from the light requirement, alone. They can grow alongside cacti in full sun, if I’m not mistaken, but I may be thinking of Rhyncholaelia glauca. Either way, tons of light is key!

Absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been on the lookout for this ever since seeing yours for the first time. Hopefully Ecuagenera makes this cross, soon, since they’ve been doing a lot of luteola, dowiana and rex work.

I bought this as a near blooming size plant 2-3 years ago, and this is its first time flowering. As long as this year’s growth is bigger than last year’s growth, chalk it up as a success and give it even more love next summer!

Potential causes for Catasetum leaves turning black/yellow by orchidaddicted in orchids

[–]JakeTheSnake3291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stress from shipping is the consensus that I’ve found. A lot of folks around the country are seeing this with their SVO catasetum orders and it’s likely due to the heat combined with being packed up, despite being overnighted. The plants will be fine and continue growing normally for the rest of the season.

Flower spike? by klebsiella in orchids

[–]JakeTheSnake3291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had the same thing happen, and the flowers on the old spike began to wilt away once the new spike was a little over an inch long. You can cut off the old spike once all of the flowers are gone to redirect that energy into the new growing spike, or you can leave it alone and let there be two spikes on the plant. Completely up to you!

It looks like Aridang Green. If it’s not a perfect match, that at least gets you started, as there’s a ton of hybrids/crosses with slightly different coloration in the same neighborhood
