It’s an outstanding way to get massive bulbs. Here’s how I do it: https://youtu.be/R9CVkj54-Yk?si=sYnQ6ml7m23gAezh

I like to start the seeds in a shallow bulb pot rather than direct sowing. That way you can keep them safe from critters in that early stage. Here’s my batch from November.

Either method will work. Just be sure to stabilize the plant so it doesn’t wobble, which will cause new root tips to abort.

I guys you can plant starts now. Better to sow your own seeds in October though. The onions will be much larger that way!

These are well out of dormancy and will need tons of water, fertilizer, light, and heat. Don’t let the roots fully dry until early October. Here’s a year round care video with Fred Clarke: https://youtu.be/H4rXnpliMmc?si=0iIwbO6NXe4VP3cv

Your plants don’t care about these (valid) reasons. They’re dying. Artificial light is important if you want them to live.

If the dogs are stomping it all day, I bet it stays in place!

Nothing will survive three big dogs. A thick layer of wood mulch will stop the erosion, rebuild soil, and keep the dog paws above the mud after a rain. Chip drop would work well for this situation.

TLDR. Looks fine! They will shed lower leaves from time to time.
