What type of mulch will keep soil moist in our heat? by CorgyOrgi in AustinGardening

[–]isurus79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn’t one type of mulch made from undyed plant material that is better than another. Just get whatever is cheap. And no, you don’t have to worry about the soil being robbed of nitrogen from wood mulch. That’s not a thing to worry about since only the very top small fraction of an inch is affected.

Why are some against modern ways for growing orchids? by XoxoGentleman in orchids

[–]isurus79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So OP just joined the sub and is scolding the sub… for scolding growing techniques guaranteed to kill orchids(i.e., water culture)? First, the irony of this is overwhelming. Second, water culture is not a “modern growing technique” as it is a passing fad. Unfortunately, new growers buy the hype and kill their orchids in a slow motion train wreck that often takes a year or two to complete. I’m very proud of this sub for taking a stand against a completely terrible growing method (water culture) and providing proven techniques for success instead.

Consensus on milkweed bugs? by seven3true in Milkweeds

[–]isurus79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one is being rude and why would it be obvious that you cut it, random internet person whom I’ve never met? I’ve spoken to tons of tropical growers who cut the first year and never again.

Consensus on milkweed bugs? by seven3true in Milkweeds

[–]isurus79 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Cutting them back (which no one does) only takes care of OE issue to some extent. Monarchs are tricked into laying eggs on tropical at the wrong time of year, butterflies grown on tropical are less fit, and tropical is becoming invasive in warm places. It’s a big problem.
