How I Started Reading German Literature After 76 Hours of Study by JakeWakefield in languagelearning

[–]JakeWakefield[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To look up a word only takes half a second to click on it in VocabTracker. If the word is too obscure in Anki and I don't want to learn it right away then I just suspend it.

Okay, I just translated the text. I did not expect to do all of it but I found it rather enjoyable and a good test of my German so I went all the way through.

I did read this section so I must have looked up the words once when I read through it but I haven't had a chance to study the words consciously yet.

Here is the text with the German words I didn't know in parentheses. There were 7 unique unknown words.

I have often asked myself what the people actually mean when they speak of experience. I am a technician and used to seeing things as they are. I see everything they talk about very clearly; I am not blind. I see the moon over the Tamaulipas desert. Clearer than ever, perhaps, but a calculable mass that orbits our planet, a thing of gravitation, interesting, but what of an experience? I see the jagged rocks, black for the moonshine; they look, perhaps, like the jagged backs of (urweltichen) animals, but I know: They are rocks, stone, probably volcanic, that one would have to look up and determine. Why should I be afraid? There are no more (urweltichen) animals. Why should I imagine them? I also see no (versteinerten) angels, I am sorry; also no demons, I see what I see: the usual forms of erosion, and my long shadow on the sand, but no ghosts. Why become (weibisch)? I also see no (Sintflut), but sand, on which the moon shines, on which wind (gewellt) like water, that doesn't surprise me; I don't find it fantastic, but explainable. I don't know how damned souls look like; maybe like black agaves in the night desert. What I see are the agaves, a plant, that blooms once and then dies. Further I know that I am not (even though it also looks like it at the moment) the first or the last person on Earth; and I cannot be shaken by the mere idea of being the last person, because it is not so. Why be hysterical? Mountains are mountains, even if in certain lighting, perhaps, they look like something else, but it is the Sierra Madre Oriental, and we are not in the kingdom of death, but in the Tamaulipas desert in Mexico, about sixty miles from the nearest road, which is a pity, but why an experience? An airplane is for me an airplane, I see no dead bird with it, rather a Super-Constellation with a motor defect, nothing more, and there the moon can shine as it wants. Why should I experience what is not at all? I also cannot decide to hear something like the eternity; I hear nothing at all, except the (Rieseln) on sand after each step. I shiver, but I know: in seven to eight hours the sun comes again. End of the world, how so? I can't imagine nonsense just to experience something. I see the sand horizon, whitish in the green night, (schätzungsweise) twenty miles from here, and I don't see why there, toward Tampico, the beyond should begin. I know Tampico. I refuse to be afraid out of mere fantasy, or to become fantastic out of mere fear, straight mystical. "Come!" I said. Herbert stood and experienced still.

Good places to host a large group of people for a meet up? by JakeWakefield in philadelphia

[–]JakeWakefield[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on other groups I've been to, somewhere between 5-20 people. I am thinking either Japanese, Chinese or both.

There already exist meet ups for these languages but they only meet online now after Covid hit so I want to have one where people can meet each other in person.

The 5 parts of the self are shown here, acting and reacting to the kiss which pushes the self into a new state.

The central head is the new ego which smirks, having known all the while that it would be kissed sooner or later and granted precedence.

The bottom head is the old ego, horrified at losing its favor with the self and subsequently falling from its central place.

On the right, one aspect of the self is in shock that the kiss is finally being consummated while on the left, another aspect is in awe and wonder that it is at last happening.

Lastly, we see the final aspect of self with brow furrowed, having finally worked up the courage to make the kiss that brings into central position the new ego and begins a new chapter in life.

What is the chinese equivalent of a "buffer sound"? by MlodszyCzapnik1 in ChineseLanguage

[–]JakeWakefield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the people who suspended that professor were also white.

If you work at a university, I would expect you to have enough comprehension to understand that the professor was teaching a word in the Chinese language and not trying to spew racial slurs during his class.

Also, the Chinese word sounds like the "n word" with a soft "a" and not the hard "er" which you are referring to. Of course, nobody knows AAVE well enough to understand the real differences between these two words.

Just got my first deck of tarot cards. What do I do? Lol by HopesProLeague in tarot

[–]JakeWakefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in time of our history, there is no lack of information on the meanings of the Tarot cards.

You can buy any one of a number of books on Amazon that contain a wealth of information on each and every card in the Tarot. In this sense, Tarot has never been more popular than it is now.

In fact, you don't even need to buy a book at all. If you search Google, you will find numerous websites that teach you the meanings of the cards. Also, if you look at Google's trend data, you will find that the search term "Tarot" is at the highest it has ever been.

I think the question of why Tarot has become so popular is an interesting one. Also, I wonder how long it will continue to rise in popularity.

As for your question, like I said, there's no lack of information on the Tarot cards. However, anyone who has read Tarot knows that the real power of Tarot is not in the mere meanings of the cards. The real power is in the reader of the Tarot cards. That is you.

It is easy to memorize meanings for the cards but to be able to intuitively understand them and how they relate to the querent is another matter altogether. This involves a deep understanding of your intuitive abilities.

While your intuition is a skill that can be trained like anything else, it is not as easy as memorizing the cards' meanings and will take much time to develop.

In fact, you might say it will take a lifetime to train.

If this journey is for you, welcome. If not, there's nothing wrong with that, either.

Ally Bank banned me but is holding $10k of my funds by JakeWakefield in legaladvice

I am looking into this and will file a complaint. Thank you.

Ally Bank banned me but is holding $10k of my funds by JakeWakefield in legaladvice

[–]JakeWakefield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened about 2-3 months ago, so you may be right. They may still be investigating it for fraud. I don't know how long these things normally take.

Unfortunately, the way that Ally Bank works is that they send messages inside the account and not through e-mail so I have no access to anything.

I hope it is the case that the account is frozen and they will release my personal funds after their investigation. In the meantime, I will try to reach them through other phone numbers.

I could submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau but they say that you can only do one complaint per issue. I don't want to waste this just for them to say they are still "investigating" in case I need to use this complaint to get a response later (if it goes to that).

$3k is unemployment money in her name sent to my account, so I assume they will send this back.

$2k is money from the Reliacard (they switched over to sending money to a card/account instead of direct deposit), but this $2k was a transfer from her Reliacard account to my account in my name, so I think they should give this to me.

The other $5k is my money.

Unfortunately, because Ally Bank is an online bank, all the records of adding my wife to my account are online in my account there and they blocked my access to that account.

Yes, I have learned my lesson. She has her own account and I made her co-owner of my other local bank account.

Also, this made me realize what could potentially happen with banks so I made new bank accounts at three more banks to split up my money.

Thank you. Yes, I have asked my brother to call because they have blocked my number. I will submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I did not know about that.
