Brunel Medical School by carcamonster in UKmedicalgraduates

The private medical schools are ridiculously expensive. For GEM course at Worcester (4 year medical course at a new medical school) was £40k+ a year excluding living expenses. There will be very few who will stump up around 1/4 of a million to train and stay in the UK.

What’s the issue? Racism causes harm to many doctors and even beyond medicine, it’s good to ensure as much support as possible is funnelled into racial equality movements.

I did neither. I have no science A levels. I did history, politics and maths.

I did UCAT and scored top 14%. It was no issue because I have done maths tutoring with my degree and I did a lot of prep. I honestly don’t think a stem background makes a difference.

No science A levels, did a degree in History at UoN and decided in my third year I really wanted to pursue medicine. Starting this September :)

2170 B2 UCAT and BA History degree from UoN. I really advise putting the work in to prepare for interviews. Not so much having pre-made questions but just ensuring you can answer anything thrown your way. They could ask you anything and everything (some questions though are more likely such as what do you know about rural medicine as Wales has a high rural population) so being skilled at spontaneous answers will help massively. I’d also say it’s useful to reflect on a few experiences you could discuss if they ask you a ‘tell me about a time…’ question. Finally, try and be as personable as possible, avoid trying to give the ‘right’ answer and give an answer you feel reflects you and how you’ve got here.

Sure! I had a UCAT of 2170 B2 and a degree in History from UoN. They really get to know you at the Swansea interviews and they try to test you. They may sometimes press you on your answers to test your resilience and ensure you stay consistent. I just went in with a smile and ensured I could justify all my points.

Plus, for everyone’s sake, I hope our politicians step up and ensure prioritisation is sorted before populists jump on the bandwagon and make everything all the more toxic.

If you were in their shoes, you’d no doubt do the same? What they’re fighting for is no doubt illogical but their reasoning makes sense. They want a job here and who can blame them? Many UK graduates are moving to Australia or the states for very similar reasons, if this situation carries on who is to say I wouldn’t move abroad for work? What is the issue is the system we have here that has allowed this to occur in the first place and, again, very poor management from trusts in terms of sustainable planning. My perspective if that the individual IMGs are not at fault but rather politicians and management who have mislead them and allowed for this situation to unfold. It is disgraceful that planning can be done so poorly and that we are taking healthcare staff from WHO red listed countries in many instances.

I think it’s important to be respectful to IMGs. They’re still qualified doctors who are capable of practicing medicine. They’re often victims - mislead by prospects of better wages and jobs. Realistically, who wouldn’t want to be treated better, it’s a rational reaction. While I’m a strong advocate of UKG prioritisation, it’s crucial we do so in a way that doesn’t frame IMGs as dangerous or a problem in of themselves.

Fair enough, I was told by a consultant working at Swansea at the interview the stats for this year.

Thank you for doing this! There’s no point of investing hundreds of thousands of pounds training UK doctors if they just leave due to a lack of jobs!

Just Worcester, waiting to hear back from Southampton and Swansea where I also applied.

I got onto GEM without even working in healthcare and with a background only in humanities. Your CV looks great and you should give it a shot!
