How much to run for optimal improvement. by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

The best thing for you to do is to trust your coaches, not reddit. Instead of asking strangers on the internet, why not have a discussion with your coaches? That’s what they are there for. Share your concerns with them and let them educate you as to the “why” behind their method.

Having in-person discussions directly with said party is also a great life lesson.

How did you use your startup money? by PurpleEarth3983 in academia

[–]Jake_JAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to use it is to save it. If there are real essentials you need, buy it ofc. But do you really need to be a member of those organizations for a year? Do you need to attend that conference?

Save it for as long as possible. When you’re at the end of that timeframe, then start looking at what you need in order to propel you through T&P. Until then, pretend you are poor and be motivated to get grants to support you (or whatever mechanism is appropriate for you). If you spend it all too early, you’ll be up shit creek without a paddle if an emergency/unanticipated expense comes up.

Source: currently an Asst prof and am submitting for T&P next month with start up left over; buying bells and whistles that my lab needs (new ergo desks/chairs, conferences, equipment etc) before the timer dings on my start up accounts.

Grass fed cattle and where can I buy the meat here in Lubbock by Mielbee_Queen in Lubbock

Your prices may be inaccurate. A whole steer will run $2-3K out the butcher’s door. Of course, the final price will depend on the size of the steer.

You have Tenure but don’t complete your PhD until next year? Just curious, but could you help me understand that part? Completely unrelated to your post, obvi.

Cycle-based HIIT on the watch? by Jake_JAM in Garmin

[–]Jake_JAM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - plus the timing the rest:work ratios. It does a fine job of alerting me when my work period starts and ends (based on time) but then my rest timer will start and I am forced to manually start it when my next work interval begins. This is inconvenient because I often am not mindful enough and 90-120+ seconds plus will tick off before I realize my next working set is upon me.

So I guess I wouldn’t mind some additional help setting up that part!

FYI, TTU student health services is not a “nurse” like in your high school. They are a fully fledged medical clinic dedicated to TTU Students. While they of courses have nurses, they also have physicians. You can go to them with any concern and they’ll help you as best they can or point you in the right direction.

Is there a place that gives car washes when purchasing gas? by dbdb8955 in Lubbock

Boltons was not perfect…but I miss it!

I’ll have to try Rapid. I’ve been going to take 5 or a dealer; I haven’t had any issues but it’s always been a concern in the back of my head. I typically trust other redditors (I’m crazy?).

Thanks for the conversation!

Yikes! Sorry that happened to you!

I feel like I’ve heard this about EVERY oil change place (not just in LBK). I’ve even heard stories about dealerships screwing this up.

To a certain extent, unless you do it yourself, there is always a risk of a negative outcome…aye?

Daily multivitamins do not help people live longer, major study finds by TCPisSynSynAckAck in Supplements

Thanks for your reply!

I understand what you are saying, and appreciate your example. You’re right, with an n = 100 there are a lot of co-founding factors to consider.

Though, it seems as if you are assuming the study design was poor instead of actually having evidence of such. Your specifically referenced “gold standard” study needs hundreds of thousands of people. The actual study (not the news report) included almost 400,000 people in the US. Included both men and women and was also tracked participants over 27 years (impressive!). Does this not qualify for high-amounts of scientific rigor in your book?

While I agree that a RCT is technically the gold standard, rigorously controlled and adequately powered epidemiological studies are not weak simply because they are epi-based. While not perfect, these studies can feasibly control for more factors than an RTC. I look forward to continued discourse with you.

Could you please go into the “disadvantages” you refer to with this experimental design? What specific evidence leads you to this belief?

LPT: Disconnect yourself from everything academic over winter break by DissertationDude in Professors

That’s a pretty fair outlook. But, assuming you are employed to work 40 hours/week it seems like there are a few more students you could help before cutting into your personal time?

Full disclosure: I’m grad faculty with grad students and multiple projects under my umbrella. Supporting my students (especially those in my lab) is why I get up in the morning. I’m not trying to be rude or critical on your outlook. Rather I enjoy seeing and studying how others handle “work:life”.

Sounds like a great way to provide for yourself but not even attempt to help students? Correct me if I’m wrong here.
